Thursday Top News Executive Summary

Media Editors: BARR IN CONTEMPT: “The House Judiciary Committee voted Wednesday to hold Attorney General William Barr in contempt of Congress. … Justice Department spokeswoman Kerri Kupec said it was disappointing that members of Congress ‘have chosen to engage in such inappropriate political theatrics.’” (Associated Press)

TRIPLE-DIGIT BORDER APPREHENSIONS: “Apprehensions and denials of migrants at the nation’s southern border hit 109,144 in April, the highest number in a single month since 2007. … A majority of those apprehended were traveling in family units, showing a sustained pattern of Central American family migration to the United States.” (The Hill)

MORE FENCING: “The Pentagon said Wednesday that it has enough funding to build 256 more miles of border wall in the near future, and will start construction at a rate of about a half mile a day over the next six months.” (National Review)

REPUGNANT: “The United Nations decided it would be a good idea to elect several countries with terrible track records on women’s rights to sit on boards that promote… women’s rights. Somalia was elected to the U.N. Commission on the Status of Women, while the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Lebanon, Nigeria and Sierra Leone were among those elected to the U.N. Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women.” (Townhall)

TRUMP’S TARIFF THREAT, EXPLAINED: “The diplomatic cable from Beijing arrived in Washington late on Friday night, with systematic edits to a nearly 150-page draft trade agreement that would blow up months of negotiations between the world’s two largest economies. … In each of the seven chapters of the draft trade deal, China had deleted its commitments to change laws to resolve core complaints that caused the United States to launch a trade war.” (Reuters)

TAXPAYERS ON HOOK FOR STUDENT LOANS: “Student loans, already a hardship for many young borrowers, now are projected to be a burden for another class of people: U.S. taxpayers. The federal student loan program will cost the federal government $31 billion over the next decade, according to recent estimates from the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office. That’s a shift from past CBO forecasts that the government would profit from the program.” (Bloomberg Government)

LONG-AWAITED CHANGES: “Pope Francis on Thursday issued a sweeping new law aimed at holding leadership more accountable while overhauling how the Roman Catholic Church deals with accusations of abuse and coverup. … When the rules come into force June 1, priests and nuns will be required for the first time to report abuse accusations to church authorities.” (The Washington Post)

FALSE NOTIONS ON VOTER SUPPRESSION: “It just so happens that two weeks ago the Census Bureau released a report on voter turnout in 2018, which climbed 11 percentage points from the last midterm election, in 2014, and surpassed 50% for the first time since 1982. Moreover, the increased turnout was largely driven by the same minority voters Democrats claim are being disenfranchised. Black turnout grew around 27%, and Hispanic turnout increased about 50%.” (Jason L. Riley, WSJ)

SETTLED SCIENCE: “A comprehensive new study on cholesterol, based on results from more than a million patients, could help upend decades of government advice about diet, nutrition, health, prevention, and medication. … The study … centers on statins, a class of drugs used to lower levels of LDL-C, the so-called ‘bad’ cholesterol, in the human body. According to the study, statins are pointless for most people.” (Reason)

Jim Jordan Brilliantly Recaps Political Motives of scumbag liar-Jerry Nadler to Impeach AG Bill Barr

by sundance

{} ~During the House Judiciary Committee farce debate toward a pre-written impeachment resolution, Ohio Rep. Jim Jordan outlines the political motives of House democrats… to try and avoid the looming investigation by Attorney General Bill Barr. A full contempt vote normally follows the creation of the contempt resolution; which is an outcome of the debate. However, to showcase just how ridiculous and political the agenda of scumbag liar-Nadler has become, the actual contempt resolution was already written.

Sinking to Third World Status

by F.H. Buckley

{ } ~ What do you call a country where the police and the intelligence agencies spy on an opposition party? Russia? Because that’s what we’ve become, and the question is what should be done about it… For the last two years the media establishment has known that the FBI and the CIA spied on the Trump campaign, and we didn’t hear a peep from them about it. The reason for their silence was the belief that we’d find out that Trump had colluded or conspired with the Russians. Had that been the case, we might now be celebrating the FBI’s Peter Strzok as a hero that saved the Republic. But now that the dirty cop-Mueller Report is out, we know that Trump and the Trump campaign were entirely innocent. With all the tools and threats at his disposal, with all the dead-of-night raids and prosecutions for process offenses, dirty cop-Mueller couldn’t get anyone to lie about Trump. When something goes so wrong, there would be consequences in a normal country. The people who pushed a collusion story without any evidence to back it up might feel a little ashamed of themselves. They would have come out publicly and admitted they were wrong, and if they were honorable apologized to the president. But if any of that happened, I’m afraid I missed it. You might also expect people to want to know how a story of treachery and corruption were created out of thin air. Fine, the very politicized people in the intelligence agencies hated Trump and thought he’d be a disaster. They were wrong, of course, but the question is what gave them the right to employ all the powers at their command to unseat a duly elected president? If we’re now supposed to sweep it under the rug, then wouldn’t it be fair game to unleash a politicized CIA to spy on a Democratic president, or for a partisan FBI to trick his officials into lying to them? Except that then we really would have descended to a Third World rule of law. It’s hard to define the rule of law, but one thing it has to mean is that there’s a barrier between law and politics. You don’t prosecute political enemies on trumped up charges, and especially you don’t overturn an election because it didn’t turn out the way you wanted. They do that sort of thing in Venezuela and Turkey. I had thought we were better than that. The FBI and CIA have gotten away with it because they protect their own, and because they’re protected by a media establishment that isn’t a fan of the rule of law when it gets in their way. But the issue is too important to let it rest…

Illegal Immigration Creates Mass Misery That U.S. Leaders Don’t Want To Fix

by John Daniel Davidson

{ } ~ In a recent interview with a French magazine, Cardinal Robert Sarah, prefect of the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments, said it is wrong to use the gospel to defend illegal immigration… The reason many priests, bishops, and cardinals will not say so is because they are “afraid of being frowned upon, of being seen as reactionaries.” Sarah is not afraid of that. “It is better to help people flourish in their culture than to encourage them to come to a Europe in full decadence,” he said. “It is a false exegesis to use the word of God to promote migration. God never wanted these heartbreaks.” This is a radical thing to say, and no doubt Sarah will be criticized by people with acceptably liberal views on immigration. But his remarks get to the heart of an uncomfortable truth about illegal immigration, which is this: for many migrants, and especially for families and children now caught up in mass illegal entrance into the United States from Central America, it produces misery. For some, it means death. Last week, an infant drowned in the Rio Grande when the overcrowded raft he was in capsized. Three others, two of them children, are feared dead. Days earlier, a 16-year-old boy from Guatemala fell ill and died shortly after arriving at a shelter for unaccompanied children. In December, two Guatemalan children, ages 7 and 8, died in Border Patrol custody. For others, especially women, the journey north means being sexually assaulted by smugglers they paid to keep them safe. Others are extorted by criminal gangs. Still others are kidnapped and held for ransom, trafficked as sex slaves, or pressed into the service of drug cartels, transporting illegal narcotics over the border to pay off a debt or “tax” incurred simply by passing through cartel territory. In some cases, children are rented or sold to adult migrants seeking to present themselves as a “family unit” and thereby claim asylum…

The Democrats and Mass Hysteria

by Michael James

{} ~ My father owned a house on a golf course and at night we would sit on his patio. If we were chatty enough to let it get late there sometimes sounded a helluva riot in the near or far distance… The coyotes had found prey and were wildly shrieking at a potential kill. It always sounded like a pack of drunks to me. It sounded like mass hysteria. And I suppose we all catch that for better or for worse once in a while. Maybe the fever broke upon men like my dad when they were off fighting a terrible enemy on two fronts, but somehow I believe the horror surrounding those men sobered them up beyond unimpaired; like having a blood alcohol of minus .08. Upon JFK’s shooting a dash of mass hysteria was evidenced by an initial blame placed on people of the John Birch Society type, but then the real guy was unveiled as just some loony leftist in love with the Soviet Union and its brand of socialism. The remnant strain of this hysteria lives on in famous movies made by famous nut jobs; the left has never forgiven the right for not shooting JFK. Race riots might be an example of mass hysteria brought on by soft tyranny. You keep a people tightly leashed to a meager subsistence with assurance that society’s deck is eternally stacked against them while further insuring that field stays uneven by providing atrocious public education to their children, and some of those people might fly off the handle once in a while. As the smoke diminishes and the cameras lose interest, the do-gooders return to showering the root problem with spiritually malignant benevolence. The left is knowingly indifferent to the torn-apart families and shreds of human dignity strewn about the street corner where good intention intersects bad result…

Biggest Conservative Policy Successes In Trump Era Come From Cooperation, Not Resistance

by Mollie Hemingway

{ } ~ The end of 2018 had people wondering if the long-predicted recession was finally upon the country. After nearly a decade of gains, many observers legitimately wondered if the end of a long cycle of growth was near… The previous gains from 2018 were chalked up to a sugar high of tax cuts. The stock market had some huge sell offs. A government shutdown began that would extend for weeks into the new year. But months later, the stock market has recovered from the sell-off at the end of last year. The S&P hit an all-time high just 146 days after a previous all-time high, making it the second-fastest recovery in history. More than 260,000 new jobs were added to the economy in April, and the unemployment rate fell to 3.6 percent, the lowest since 1969. The unemployment rate for women is the lowest it’s been since 1953. Veterans and Hispanic Americans have never had such a low unemployment rate. Gains were particularly felt by those with a high school degree but no college. And April marked the ninth straight month that wage gains were at or above 3 percent. Gross domestic product growth for the first quarter shot past expectations. The Commerce Department put it at 3.2 percent, much more than the 2.3 percent predicted by economists. It’s one thing to beat expectations a bit, but that was a big change, driven in large part by increases in exports. The growth is striking also when compared to the slowing economies of South Korea, Germany, and Japan. The situation is in flux and the stock market could take a major hit even in the weeks to come, but all the good economic news means that President Trump hit a new high on his approval ratings for how he handles the economy, with 56 percent of Americans giving him good marks. And his favorability is also hitting high marks. “The Economy That Wasn’t Supposed to Happen: Booming Jobs, Low Inflation,” proclaimed The New York Times last week…

Dems Continue Beating a Dead Horse

Thomas Gallatin: The Left’s collusion narrative was proven a delusion, so why are Democrats still clinging to it? Well, technically they are no longer claiming the crime of collusion; they’ve shifted to an equally vacuous claim that President Donald Trump “obviously” engaged in obstruction of justice. Special Counsel dirty cop-Robert Mueller helped fuel this narrative by refusing to come to a conclusion on the question of obstruction, forcing Attorney General William Barr to make the call. The hope may have been that Barr would waffle over the question, igniting a whole new litany of questions to be spun by the Leftmedia against Trump while Democrats pounded the drum for yet another investigation. Anything to keep an air of criminality surrounding Trump through 2020.

However, Barr has proven to be a straight shooter who’s not afraid to thoughtfully apply the law as written. And therefore, he is dangerous. That’s why Democrats and their cohorts in the Leftmedia are determined to undercut his credibility. Case in point: The Washington Post in a second seemingly coordinated effort with Democrats in as many weeks, released a story Monday claiming “hundreds of former federal prosecutors assert” that “Trump would have been charged with obstruction were he not president.” It’s timed to precede Wednesday’s House vote on holding Barr in contempt.

The Post story highlights an online statement created by the leftist group Protect Democracy that has been signed by some 450 individuals with ties to Washington. The Post attempts to paint the group of signatories as individuals from across the political spectrum, but upon reviewing the list it becomes apparent that those who signed have one thing in common: They are anti-Trump. For example, one of the high-profile signers is Bill Weld, a former U.S. attorney, Reagan Justice Department official, and Massachusetts governor who just happens to be planning a primary challenge to Trump. No agenda there. Or take signer Paul Rosenzweig, who was a member of Ken Starr’s independent counsel team — never mind that Starr publicly supported Barr’s determination on obstruction.

Obviously, the Post is helping Democrats set the narrative, furthering the idea that Barr is a biased defender of Trump rather than an objective arbiter of law and order. This is also an attempt to provide cover for dirty cop-Mueller to throw shade on Barr when he comes to Congress to testify, further justifying Democrat claims that Barr is compromised and should resign.

So, again, why are Democrats continuing to pound the “Trump is a criminal” drum after dirty cop-Mueller’s report found no evidence to support such a conclusion? Do Democrats really believe that their Hate Trump platform is a winning strategy for 2020? While it certainly may play well with their base, it’s not a winning message for the majority of the country. However, there may be much more in play here than merely an election strategy.

The Washington establishment is unnerved by Barr. His no-nonsense approach cuts right through all the political doublespeak and spin to get to the facts and truth. He is a Columbo-type character whose unassuming manner hides a quick analytical mind. Furthermore, Democrats are scared because Barr, who has thus far refused to be manipulated by the elitists in the media and political class, is starting to dig into the whole deep-state conspiracy — the coup attempt by members of the Washington establishment to oust a duly elected president. This is the deeper reason for Democrats’ and the Leftmedia’s attempts to discredit Barr. They are worried he will blow open the whole sordid plot and go after the real conspirators.
