Will NRA Plan for Armed Guards in all Schools In America Stop Gun Violence

NRA - Congress must pass a law putting armed police officers in every school in America

The NRA came out with a bold plan for congress to provide armed guards in all schools across the nation as a response to the tragic elementary school murders in Newtown, Connecticut, according to Fox News. National Rifle Association CEO Wayne LaPierre made it clear in a Washington D. C. Press Conference, Friday, December 21st that the only way to confront the issue of protecting the lives of school children, teachers and administrators is to not give an inch of ground to the future gunmen and gun control hysteria. Arm all the schools and protect the children is the answer!

LaPierre vividly pointed out, "The only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun!" His point resonates with the tens of thousands of trained, unemployed combat veterans, retired law enforcement officials, and even military reservists across America who are potential resources. These Americans are more than willing and able to help insure the safety and security of the nation’s 132,656
 schools.

According to the Center for Education Reform’s latest 2010 report, there are approximately 55,235,000 children in enrolled in K-12 schools in America. This represents millions of potential targets for an unbalanced gunman like Adam Lantz to harm or murder innocent children, teachers and administrators. This is not an option that America’s parents or society should be willing to accept.

The NRA’s new plan to provide training for all public school teachers and students to help deal with safety and security in the school is far more acceptable than waiting for President Obama and his gun-czar task force head Vice President Biden to find more punitive ways to erode gun rights in America.

The biggest barrier to preventing escalating gun violence in American schools by shooters determined to kill innocent people, is a refusal by the mainstream media to acknowledge these murderers are domestic terrorists.

When Adam Lantz cold bloodedly murdered his mother, Nancy Lantz in her bed and shot and killed 20 children and 6 adults, he was a domestic terrorist. When James Holmes walked into an Aurora, Colorado movie theater in July fully dressed in protective body armor and armed with a Glock handgun, shotgun and assault rifle, he was a domestic terrorist.

So would make perfect logic to monitor and proactively apprehend these gunmen, who appear to be suffering from some type of psychotic break, and have demonstrated previous potential for deadly violence behavior. A national database to monitor these individuals is a useful first step when they send up red flags for habitually engaging in violent threatening behavior.

America needs more than a simple as well as predictable knee-jerk reaction to attack legitimate gun owners. America needs a true counter-terrorism response to this growing threat. A national registry of high-risk individuals like the Adam Lantz’s and James Holmes of the nation should be part of a national database, just as sex-offenders as well as potential terrorist threats are monitored.

In Israel all able bodies men & women have at least two years of service in the military. That is why their teachers can be armed.

My suggestion is to use retired veterans & LEOs. They are already trained and have taken an oath to protect this country. The guards would not be wandering around waiting to get shot, they would be at the entrance of the school and/or hidden on the roof of the school. They would be wearing body armor. Cost would be minimum wage for 30 hours a week per guard, plus the cost of equipment (which would be similar for arming teachers etc.)

However, what you would get are experienced veterans who know what to do if there is a threat, rather than someone who has never heard a weapon fired in anger (unless the teacher is a vet.).

The problem with using teachers etc. is that they have other jobs and won't be where they are needed. Any teacher etc. who wants to be part of the second line of defense can be trained and armed, but you want experienced people guarding the schools.

Oh, and by the way, Israel does not use AKs. They use Uzis and Galils, mostly.

Took GOD out of school and ban all weapon to defend yourself.  That makes you a sitting target.

As usual people suggest the most expensive approach to a situation.  Let me make this simple.  If as suggested we put an armed guard in every school.  Don't know how many schools there are but lets suppose 300,000.  Cost of each guard 50,000 to 100,000, or 15-30 billion dollars.  Now if I was a perpetrator and I wanted to shoot up any one of these schools, I would first find this armed guard in UNIFORM, blow him away then proceed with my mission.

My suggestion,  authorize all persons associated with the school, teacher, principle, coach, janitor, in such numbers needed who are willing and able to be cleared to have a concealed carry/open carry permit. Use a  minimum of 2-4 persons as needed commensurate with school size.  No one person can cover a large campus.    If is no one available who can or will carry  weapon then form a list of parents/grandparents,  anyone in the school environment who is willing to volunteer to patrol the school in civilian clothing.  If this cannot be accomplished the as a  last resort hire an armed guard.   Israel has no problem arming their teachers with AK's and we don't hear of any mass shootings there.  I

We need to be doing more than posting on this board. With all the media coverage about the recent mass murder, it is advertising the fact that we care deeply about of children and they are completely unprotected in our schools. I am sure that terrorists and nutcases are planning to attack schools.

Please, read my suggestions, I put the reasons behind them there too. Contact the governor of your state and make the suggestions now. We can't wait for congress to do anything, they can't even pass a budget.

Call or write or e-mail your state representatives and your governor. I already have, but one call won't get the job done.

Most of the comments here are missing some critical thought. 1. How do we, yes we, pay for any of the suggestions? If you read my previous posts I have two possibilities, a sales tax increase and a new lottery game (for the states where this is legal) or to implement a lottery (make it legal) in states that currently don't have one.

Secondly, our recent returning veterans deserve better jobs than school guards. If they desire, I would like to see them employed in the various law enforcement jobs available, such as in the TSA (would be better than the people there now if something bad goes down) to protecting out borders.

We have a resource that would gladly take on the job of protecting our schools & children: retired LEOs and military veterans. Just go to a local American Legion post and ask.

Read my previous posts.

The are millions of obama voting anti-gun citizens who will not allow guns in our schools.  Bank on it  The all powerful teachers unions will never allow their members to carry guns.  It is not part of the communist agenda.  Bank on it.  The government may come out that they would place guards in schools as part of the dept of homeland security.  That way the children can see the dashing members of our SS and want to grow up just like them.  Or they can outsource and hire retired Spetsnaz or some other foreign military - maybe Chinese or Indian like corporate America?  They would never think about hiring all of the unemployed recent vets from the middle east.  That would actually reduce unemployment, which isn't part of the plan.

Should teachers learn to shoot?  I don't know, but it sounds like a call above their line of duty.  Right now, I think teachers can do a lot more valuable service.  As a former high school teacher, I can tell you that teachers will soon know if there is a kid in class who has not adjusted well.  The fear needs to be removed from reporting such kids to the principals.  My experience is that principals do not want to hear anything that will require them to man-up.  Political correctness has made it impossible to anything negative about these dangerous kids.  Everyone in the school system is afraid of everyone else.  The persons most in control are the kids.  Our best shot (pardon the pun) is to spot these potentially dangerous students, face the parents squarely, require psychological exams, and proceed to do what is necessary.

An unbalanced kid actually knocked me down twice on one occasion, but the principal told me it was my problem--My problem!-- to control a strapping young man, a foot taller.  I heard later that the same kid and his brothers had threatened to burn the barns on the principal's farm.  You see whose really in charge.

A million pages could be written about the causes of our present chaos, but trying to attack our Constitution is not the first place to attack the problems.  Most teachers don't want to be policemen.  But, they will report the lost souls, if it is safe to do so.  Now, it is fearful, and accomplishes little.  It is simply easier to "kick these cans on down the road" for society to deal with where it soon becomes nearly impossible.  The earlier mental health care is provided, the better chance of success.  I think it is better to deal with this horrendous problem the best, and least expensive way.  Let's face it, kids need more nurture by parents, who now are too harried to do the job.  A large societal attitude adjustment is the basic answer, but until that happens, these twisted kids will show up, and keep slipping through the cracks.

I note that many of these way out kids are said to be "very intelligent."  I have seen great society programs for every class of kids except the brilliant.  And, I believe brilliant kids are more susceptive to being warped, for they are more sensentive to every influence, good or bad,  and are largely neglected for many reasons, not the least of which is because they are subjected to serious ridicule because they appear "different" for indeed they are.  It is a shame for them, our country, and the world.  Teen agers can be brutal, and they can make life miserable at school, and often do.  We have to be truthful to ourselves as we face this "monster."

FIRST of all--schools should be duty of STATES to provide security for public schools. That means a retired cop, or armed, trained security guard, not necessarily meaning any teachers would need be involved--that would likely cause screaming and protesting by teachers unions. SECOND--colleges have ARMED SECURITY on their campuses--don't you think elementary, middle, high school kids deserve a similar level of attention?  LaPierre may have mentioned Congress since it will cost money to provide those trained to do the job--more likely it will be up to STATES, local communities to pay--maybe a dollar or two increase in property taxes depending on number of residents in the various counties and districts--but face it folks, the NRA HAD TO COME OUT SWINGING, the media is distorting the truth--I've seen reports on Yahoo that support for gun ownership has been falling--when in fact, MORE PEOPLE are buying guns to the point that Sturm/Ruger was at one point 1 MILLION orders BEHIND and had to STOP TAKING ORDERS while Smith and Wesson were over 600,000 orders BEHIND, so many guns were being bought and ordered.  I've seen one article saying NRA membership is FALLING--when in FACT, Fox News and others have reported stories that they are averaging 8,000 A DAY IN NEW MEMBERSHIPS.  Without some safety measures being taken, attacks on schools will continue--armed security will likely deter many new attempts--but focus those potential killers on other venues for victims for their evil intentions. I applaud them for taking steps--in case you didn't hear LaPierre's full comments and decision to develop a National School Shield Program, you can go to: home.nra.org/pdf/Transcript_PDF.pdf     He has named former Congressman Asa Hutchinson to be Director of the program.  Hutchinson is a former U.S. Attorney, former Director of DEA, former Undersecretary of Dept. of Homeland Security.

First of all let me state that I am extremely appreciative of our active military and the sacrifices they are making for us but what I am about to say is based on my political view of this current Government not our soldiers.

I am really apposed to letting any Government agency take another power position especially in our schools with any active duty service members, remember they are currently the property of the U.S. Government and though most are honorable to the Oath, many will not hesitate to do what they are told by superiors; for instance gun confiscation during Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans. On the other hand I am totally for these same defenders once seasoned and honorably discharged and with extensive good conduct records and there are many of them. I am sure there are probably a lot of old retired Veterans now in civilian life that would delight in the chance to defend American school children probably for free but lets pay them anyhow. There are billions of dollars worth of honorable American fully trained ex-military who would love such a job and not adding to any load on locally overloaded Police.

Teachers haven't done very well in learning to teach--what makes us think they would do better at learning how to shoot straight?
