Where can you find mental starvation? Public Education

Education matters. All you need is a willingness to teach and someone with a willingness to learn. No money, no teaching certificate, no college degree or state license. Just you the teacher and the student.

Jessica was 16 when I first met her in 2006. She was Donna’s (my then girlfriend and now fiance) grand daughter. Jess was in the 10th grade at the time. Donna said she had trouble with math. Since I’m good with math and had helped many people over the years I was intrigued. Just to see where she was I started with what I thought would be easy for her. I pulled some change out of my pocket, less than a dollar with mixed coins, and gave it to her and asked “How much money is that?” She looked at the coins and said “I don’t know”. I then started asking simpler questions and found she knew the names of the coins but not what they meant. Not to mention how they were related. How could this be? Tenth grade!

As Donna explained, Jess had developed scarlet fever when she was 4. Her temperature had climbed to 106 by the time they got her to the hospital. Since Jess had appeared normal up to that point it’s reasonable to assume that some brain damage had occurred and her subsequent difficulty in learning had been attributed to that. The next few years Jess showed progress comparable to her classmates in every subject except math. Then, in the 4th grade, the school classified her as ‘challenged’ and she was put into the IEP program. IEP, or Independent Education Program, was supposed to be a tailored program in cooperation with parents. I’ll leave it to the reader to do their own research into IEP which resulted from the No Child Left Behind act. Suffice it to say that its more like baby sitting at taxpayer expense and no further effort to address her education is required by teachers or school administrators. She was outcast under the guise of ‘being special’.

As time went by she fell further and further behind her classmates and soon she didn’t fit in anymore. Nonetheless, she always remained cheerful and actually liked school. She emotionally persevered in spite of the circumstances.
That’s where she was in the tenth grade when I became aware of her story. I was so angry at the injustice but my anger wouldn’t help her. I had to educate myself about how Jess perceived math. Jess became the teacher and I was her student with lots of questions. I didn’t understand many of her answers but I kept asking questions. Gradually, over a period of weeks, I learned she couldn’t perceive math the way most people do. But there was one thing she could do. She could count. By one’s, two’s, fives and ten’s. I thought if there was any way she could learn basic math, I would have to learn how myself, but do it her way. I referred to it as ‘advanced counting’.
Over a period of 9 months Jess spent 15 to 30 minutes a day doing repetitious exersizes with almost imperceptible increases in difficulty. Gradually she learned to could by two’s but with odd numbers. Then by fives but start with any number but five.

Then, for her final exam, she had to pretend she was a cashier and a customer wanted to buy a pair of shoes that were $16.42. She was given a $20 bill and had to make correct change. She passed getting the correct answer.
THE PARENT TEACHER CONFERENCE (PAYBACK)
Periodically Donna and Jess would attend a parent teacher conference. I started attending and listening. After Jess finished her final exam we took half of her work (I couldn’t carry it all) to the meeting. Her teacher, the vice principal, and 4 other staff were present. I told them about all the homework Jess had done, pointing to the two foot high stack of completed assignments. I told them Jess was able to learn in 9 months what they failed to do in 6 years. The vice principal’s head dropped in what I hope was shame.
Then I said, “You people teach tenth grade, Jess is at fourth grade level in English. Are you incapable of teaching 4th grade level?”
One person responded “That wouldn’t be fair”. Another responded, “Why do you want her to learn to read anyway?”.

Conclusion:
Parents, your children may not be getting the education that you think. Its not 1960 anymore.

Personal note:

I wasnt teaching math. I was teaching Jess. The difference is, if she failed, so did I.

I always told my kids while they were growing up, and now to every kid I meet, never let a teacher stand between you and a good education.  But I wish someone would write a blog on how to inspire a young person to dream.

Willie, that's a lovely story.  I'm sure we're all rooting for Jess, here!

Don't get me started on special ed.  Loved the kids; hated that system.

I had been volunteering everyday for about 3 months in my sons 4th grade classroom. I was helping students behind get caught up. They were about to start division which my son already knew from the year before at a private school (money pushed us out of school because they started giving financial assistance to others but we lost our multichild discount and price went up so we moved to public knowing I could help my kids) but problem was out of 21 students only 5 knew multiplication tables, the rest were still having trouble with adding and subtracting large numbers. Luckily while I was there we caught up kids on subtracting and addition for the most part. There were a couple I was concerned about them not being able to learn but when mentioned to teacher it was just ignored or stumbled over. And she is a really good teacher. Then their was one child that just refused to do work. Now about 8 of them leave the classroom for extra help certain times of day, even during middle of tests and not only are these kids supposed to make up their work, which they were not in class to learn, but they have to do their special class work also. Don't even get me started in reading. I'm just glad my kids started with phonics. And 4th graders are now answering questions that they have to figure out from entire text not a direct answer. Things we did late high school and SAT. I left for health reasons and plan to help again if we ever get insurance straightened out :) but that's another story. All I can say to parents is volunteer for just a week in elementary if you are able just to see what's going on and no matter what check work at end of day, do extra work with them, they do send papers home of what your child is supposed to learn and make sure your child is not struggling by keeping on teacher and having an open relationship with your child. Explain to them you are worried about what they are learning and that you will not get mad over grades (I have learned grades now are not the same as they were, a teacher cannot even give a child under a 60 in the grade book/computer program). Parents be involved!!! I commend the writer of article for stepping up!

willie . . . Great job . . . and disclosure of how bad our education system has become.  There are great educators, but they are often discouraged by the "set curriculum" they are forced to follow . . . its getting worse.

The Common Core Curriculum, which is Rotten to the Core, is in the process of taking over our K-12 Education system.

Common Core is nothing less than sophisticated brain-washing via Political Correctness, limiting teaching materials to the Politically-Correct-Nanny-State and forcing students to read and select Political Correct multiple choice answers in order to receive a passing grade.

There's a ground-swell in nearly every state that's blunting this Draconian move, fostered by a few educators and high tech companies . . . but the end affect is to further dumb-down K-12 education.  Butt, money is driving this evil initiative.  

Arnie Duncan (Dept of Un-Education) kicked it off in 2009 with a billion dollar gift from obama (another part of his stimulus that bought hot air).

Wow, that's great.

There is a story about a great French writer, perhaps Victor Hugo, who was asked by his illiterate groundskeeper to write a letter for him. When Hugo read it to his groundskeeper, the gardener replied that Hugo got it all wrong. At first Mr. Hugo was angry and said, "People around the world wait for his new books to come out and now I cannot compose a simple letter?" But thinking it over for a day, Hugo realized that the groundskeeper was right. Hugo had expressed his view of the story in the letter - and the gardener wanted to convey his viewpoint and his emphasis on select facts (and the gardener knew the letter's recipient's viewpoint as well).

Let's see...Democrats and complicit RINOs have wrecked education, energy production and generation, national defense, banking and finance, manufacturing, labor and in case I left anything out, the economy in general; they've turned justice upside down, wrecked the healthcare system, revised English to suit their political ends, made fools of us globally, put the black population deeper into servitude while ruining their family units, balkanized us socially, and shut us out of the law-making process...

I know I'm missing a lot of things here, but isn't that enough?  Isn't it time for a real change?
