The incident in Los Angeles over the resent soccer match
closing venue which took place in Spanish is a much larger issue than most
people think. In truth, it is far from a minor incident. To be a gracious host
for a sporting event in one thing, to cross over the boundary of propriety by
falling victim to what some may construe as an acceptable use of a PC “Politically
Correct” stance is naive in the extreme.
Bodies in motion stay in motion and there are a growing
number of bodies that have a skewed sense of history or no sense of history. History does not run backward* has
already been written and the facts of the matter haven’t changed. We need to
come to a cultural standpoint that embodies greater truths: A national soul
does exist and it bears the weight of history, both positive and negative.
Every nation is a work in progress and without a committed citizenry is doomed.
If we have too few that understand the breadth and depth of a nation’s purpose
for being, we will disintegrate into factions of takers and users.
Language is a common bond through which we share some sense
of commonality of being and of purpose. Without an understanding of why people
flock to this country we cannot sustain this country. It is as simple as that.
Ignorance knows no bounds and it is our personal and communal responsibility to
work towards a common understanding. A common language is a major tool in
giving us sufficient understanding to work toward a greater depth of personal
and communal understanding.
