Texas was its own nation before joining the United States, and many jokes have been made about some Texans still not recognizing that “other government” with which it now is affiliated.

But lawmakers there are drawing attention by considering a law that would have Texas review how it would respond should the U.S. government no longer be there to send federal tax revenue back to the state.

The proposal would set up a committee to study what the state gets from..., “the effects on the state budget if federal fiscal policy necessitates a significant reduction in or elimination of federal funding” and “a plan to address the loss of federal money.”

The plan, HB 568, has been introduced by Rep. James White, who said in a statement Texas Self-Sufficiency Act “creates a select committee to evaluate the effects of a possible reduction in or elimination of federal funding on the state budget due to federal fiscal policy.”

“Due to the fiscal dysfunction of Washington, D.C., and the fact that more than a third of our state’s budget revenue comes from the federal government, Texas needs to study what it would mean if the federal government couldn’t meet its obligations,” he said.

The plan directs the governor, lieutenant governor and other officials to assemble a committee “to analyze not only our state’s dependence on federal funds, but the impact of federal funding on Texas’ economy.”

Said White: “My district in South East Texas, for example, has a higher proportion of seniors compared to the state overall percentage. What would happen in the event the federal government eliminated the funds normally allocated to them? In the current economic climate, exacerbated by out of control spending in Washington, Texas needs to study possible responses to federal financial turmoil, and our readiness to adjust to such an event. Texans must govern Texas and Texans need to be concerned about Texas.”

On the website for the state GOP, David Bellow blogged about the idea.

“State Rep. James White has proposed a bill that will require the leaders of Texas to start crunching the numbers and figure out what Texas would look like if it had to be self sufficient … limited or no federal support … OUR OWN COUNTRY…. oops, I am getting a little ahead of myself, haha. Hey, I didn’t say secession but that certainly comes to mind when thinking about the federal government having a financial meltdown and cutting off most or all support to the states.”

Ooops!

Can I correct my previous comment to read:-

In Britain, we apparently get a sizeable amount of money from the European Union. Trouble is, all that money, AND MORE, is paid by British taxpayers TO the EU in the first place!

In total, we pay in about 50% more than we get back - and the EU bosses dole it out to us as though they're doing us a big favour . . .

(that'll teach me to read it over before posting!

Katie - just out of interest; Rep. James White says that "more than a third of our state's budget revenue comes from the federal government" - but I'm wondering how the net position looks when you factor in the federal taxes paid by Texan taxpayers TO the federal government? And how would Texas' budget look if that money was retained in Texas?

In Britain, we apparently get a sizeable amount of money from the European Union. Trouble is, a hefty proportion of that money is paid by British taxpayers TO the EU in the first place! What happens then is that much of that money is handed over to other EU member states, a very hefty slice is grabbed by the EU bureaucracy to fund their outrageous salaries and expenses - and we get what's left over. Even worse, a significant amount of what supposedly comes back to Britain is given by the EU to various organisations (including registered charities!) which put out a constant flood of pro-EU propaganda, as though it was coming from those organisations and completely independent of the EU.

I wonder, for example, how many seemingly independent organisations, which are pushing the global warming scam for all it's worth in Texas, are actually funded by the federal government with Texan's taxes?

I can't help but notice that the pro-EU lobby never, ever mention any net profit that we make from membership of the EU - and I'm darn sure that, if we did, they'd be shouting it from the rootops.

(re. the point "many jokes have been made about some Texans still not recognizing that “other government” with which it now is affiliated" - I can empathise with that. If you really want to get into a heated argument with an Englishman, try telling him that he's a European . . . !!)

Why do you think Glenn Beck moved to Texas? Because he knows that those that do survive this communist takeover in America, it will be in Texas.

Im proud to say that Rep. james White is my State Rep. and he is what we have been needing in this area for a long time. He is a true Conservative, Christian, and proud Texan! Rep White is also Black and sets a rfine example for all races. He stood againest the establishment of Rinos and won, with the Tea Party's support here. Im glad that he is doing what we ask him to do and not just talk down to us like we are Peons like the Rino he replaced. I personally think that if we can't make this communist takeover stop in America, then we in Texas should succeed from the Union and once again become its own Country. Texas has been its own country and had its own money and we have all the resources that you need to survive. This is why Obama has just had the defense Radar System closed down on the Texas border told us that it was too costly, but moved it to surround Washington DC! That leaves our borders open to attaacks with low flying missles. Obama cannot take our arms from Texans without a fight. We have big companies coming here everyday and if one wants a job you can find one.  God Bless Texas and James White.

As one famous American put it - You (Washington D.C.) may go to hell - and I will go to Texas.

The climate there may kill me - but Obama would probably do it sooner

We moved to Texas early ... Jake said he wanted to get down here and get settled before we needed a passport to get in! ;-)

If Texas did secede property value would skyrocket as most of the American Patriots would be moving to TEXAS.
