High there, city slickers. You didn't know us New York City types were such big down-home farmers. Well, frankly, neither did I. But today's New York Post reports that the son of the late VP Nelson Rockefeller - the one who the term "Rockefeller Republican" is named after - owns some Idaho farm land and the government is paying him not to grow anything on it. That's the insiders definition of "Share the Wealth" and "Soak the Rich" while the real small farmers and truck drivers and waitresses pay for his subsidy in taxes.

These New Yorkers are raking in the green.
More than 1,500 city residents are getting federal farm subsidies, 374 on the Upper East Side alone.
The recipients include some “farmers” who already have their own well-cultivated money trees, among them Mark F. Rockefeller.
“That should really make people wonder what on earth has happened to the farm program,” said Craig Cox, senior vice president for agriculture and natural resources at the Environmental Working Group, which maintains a national database of farm-subsidy recipients.
“Payments are going to people in Manhattan who simply have invested in farmland and are about as far away from farmers as one could imagine.”
Rockefeller, a fourth-generation member of the family and the younger son of late Vice President Nelson Rockefeller, has gotten $342,634 in taxpayer handouts from 2001 through 2011 for thousands of acres of unused farmland he owns in Bonneville County, Idaho. The payments are made so that he does not farm, to allow the land to return to its natural state.
Nearby, Rockeller, a partner in investment firm Rockefeller Consulting/Insight Capitalists and a former director of the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation, owns an upscale fly-fishing resort where a three-day stay starts at $3,835.

Comment by PC Bob on January 7, 2013 at 11:35am Ethanol DOES burn cleaner, but at what a price? At 10% it isn't enough to really affect emissions. You get fewer BTU's per gallon (lower gas mileage, less power) and there is much concern about damage to your vehicles fuel system. America should be looking at Brazil, since they have been running their vehicles on PURE alcohol for years, with no problems, and they don't use food crops to manufacure it, either! They also drive American made cars, just like ours, as well as all the foriegn models, too. Our food cost's have JUMPED since we started puttering around with using corn. SOMEONE is getting huge subsidies and it isn't the consumer. When the govt was subsidizing the Ethanol mfrs, gas at the pump was a bit cheaper. Now that the subsidies have stopped, prices are once again climbing. We are at the mercy of big $Billionaires and their profits! And the government is in their back pockets, pushing yet more $Billions to them.

Tons of people would give their left arm for a chunk of land like that to work and use. Used to be a requirement to gain ownership of land was that you had to work the land.
Comment by Rich Knoch on January 7, 2013 at 8:35am Our state is graced with at least one Congress Person who's sucked up around a million dollars of farm subsidy while being in office (state and federal) for owning farms that don't grow anything (while food prices continue to increase). This is happening in every state . . . check before you vote next time.

gas with ethanol? It burns dirtier than gas, produces less energy than gas, costs more than gas, and does
not lower the price at the pump! Why do it then? Oh, the corn growers love the money they get from it!

Harvesting our tax dollars once again? Are we pissed yet? it keeps on coming! I never understood why we have to pay our tax dollars for these people "NOT TO PRODUCE" i MEAN THEY WWOULD NOT PRODUCE EVEN IF THERE WAS NOT A SUISIDY AND THESE RENACHGERS CREATED THE FARM TAX SO THEY COULDBENIFIT FROM IT. THIS HAS BEEN GOING ON SINCE THE DEPRESSION! aRE WE NOT STUOID OR WHAT. i MEAN oBUMMER GAVE $1,2 billion AS SOME FORM OF "Black Farmers Reperations for 1800's last May or sometime in 2012' and we never found out actually who got the money$. I guess we gave our president the impression he had blank check to pay well lets see I think there are a lot of Black recipients involved here. Is iiiit REERATIONS YET!Not only involved but they got the hand outs without the people even catching on it happened! I love this guy! He is getting a free ride on our backs!
