David Gregory attempts to embarrass NRA leader by holding up high-capacity magazine clip on Meet the Press
Just how important was it for David Gregory, NBC Meet the Press anchor to break a gun law to embarrass NRA on Sunday’s show? It was not enough for Gregory to continue to badger NRA Chief Wayne LaPierre, into submitting to points that a New Assault Weapon Ban would work when the expired ban had not. According to the Washington Post, Wednesday, December 26th, an official investigation has been launched by the D.C. attorney general’s office.
The NBC anchor had to go the extra mile to challenge Wayne LaPierre, with a high magazine clip, knowing full well that it was against the law in Washington D.C. to be in possession of such a clip. So, was it right for Gregory, a longtime Washington journalist, to break the law, when he knew that the Washington D.C. police had denied the display of the gun clip on the air when it was requested? Should Gregory be fined, suspended or fired for going too far in breaking the law in his attempt to neuter the Second Amendment rights of American law abiding citizens?
There is a serious problem that is emerging in the nation when journalists like NBC’s Gregory can decide that they are above the laws which mere mortals in the heartland of the nation must obey.
Was it not enough to bring up points of disagreement with the NRA as it attempted to do, and were summarily dismissed with great professional skill as LaPierre, displayed? When the arguments that the Meet the Press anchor was trying to skewer the NRA were easily deflected, Gregory appeared to become more combative. His continued being more insistent, and even attacking and vilifying the NRA official for not agreeing with the gun control Washington democrats, and headline writers from around the nation.
Instead, LaPierre, calmly and firmly stated his and the concerns of millions of parents around the nation that wanted to see their children arrive and leave safely from their schools. The Meet the Press anchor kept insisting that the NRA leader was wrong, wrong, wrong!
Gregory, appeared visibly shaken by the steadiness of the NRA leader and seemed to decide at that moment that he needed to play the ace, which the police had already said he could not. Gregory picked the high-capacity magazine and held it up.

Comment by Catherine on December 28, 2012 at 10:03pm Thanks, Donald Mack Flippin! I wish we could just stick to the point of the story which is Gregory had in his possession something which illegal in DC to own, carry, or exchange whatever it is (but now I know!)
Comment by Donald Mack Flippin on December 28, 2012 at 9:31pm Lord, I wish we could get back to using the King's English in this country!
Let's go through this real slowly (for those who have not served in the U.S.
military and/or for those who are likewise uninformed).
#1. An "assault rifle" was/is a fully automatically rifle which was intended to
be used by an assaulting force to neutralize a fixed, defensive position of an
opposing armed force in the field. During WW II, the Germans had such wea-
pons, and they used them effectively. What an assault rifle did (for those who
have enough military expertese to understand what I'm saying) is, it essentially
made an offensive soldier/Marine a mobile machinegunner. That is to say, a
member of an assaulting force thusly armed was, in effect, a mobile, offensive
machinegun operator. The Russians also produced and made use of such wea-
pons.
From a knowledgeable Marine's perspective, a machinegun was designed to be
a DEFENSIVE weapon. One set the weapon up in a certain place (a machinegun
position), and then one waited for the enemy to come into view and/or into range.
Read the story of John Basilone, Sergeant, United States Marine Corps, Guada-
canal, WW II. He commanded a machinegun unit which stopped a massive Japanese
Banzi attack during the battle for Guadacanal. He was awarded the Medal of Honor
for his actions during that engagement (though he was later killed on Iwo Jima).
Okay, get this straight: Basilone's unit was in a DEFENSIVE position, and the Japanese
soldiers were the ASSAULTING FORCE. The Japanese (with the possible exception of
a few 6.5 m/m light machineguns) had no assault riflles, and, even if a few of the Japanese
forces had carried said light machineguns during that Banzi attack, those would not have
been technically called ASSAULT RIFLES ___ because said instruments of war were not
rifles and were not designed to be used as OFFENSIVE weapons.
During WW II, the closest thing that the U.S. forces had which could have been considered
as "assault rifles" was the B.A.R. (the Browning Automatic Rifle) and the fully automatic
M-1 carbine (either the M-2 or the M-3). The problem was: the BAR was designed to be a
defensive weapon (complete with bipods at the muzzle end of the weapon), and the thing
weighed over 18 pounds! If you don't believe me ___ ask me!! And a BAR had a 20-round
magazine. (And note the word I just used: MAGAZINE! A BAR did not use a CLIP ___ it
used a MAGAZINE! Big difference!!)
Otherwise (and as previously stated), U.S. forces used fully automatic M-1 Carbines. Problem:
No knowledgeable person could refer to a fully automatic M-1 (variation) Carbine as an ASSAULT
RIFLE ___ because a carbine is not a rifle, and because an M-1 Carbine fired a pistol cartridge,
not a rifle cartridge.
So ___ at the end of the day, during WW II, two opposing forces used fully automatic offensive
rifles one against the other: the Germans ___ and the Russians. THOSE WEAPONS THAT THEY
USED WERE "ASSAULT RIFLES". The United States really didn't have any such weapons.
Fast forward ___ to Viet Nam. I actually fired an experimental M-14 based fully automatic assault
rifle. I fired one magazine (20 rounds) through the piece ___ and I was asked for my evaluation.
I, along with almost every other Marine involved in said evaluation, gave the piece a thumbs down.
The AR-14 was unmanageable. Obviously, if you could fire a rifle (7.62 m/m Nato round = com-
mercially, a .308 Winchester), you could hit P.O.A. (point of aim) with the first round. Rounds
#2 through #20 went wherever they wanted to go.
So, forget the AR-14 as an assault rifle. Never happened!
Later ___ we had the M-16 tuned to fire full automatic ___ the first true U.S. assault rifle.
Note: If it is not a full automatic, it's not an assault rifle. Just because a piece looks like
it might be a full automatic DOES NOT make said piece an "assault rifle".
So ___ when pansy policians start talking about "assault rifles" (the names "Nancy P., Harry
R., Chucky S., Bite Me, and B. Insane Obama come to mind?"), if it's not an automatic, it's
not an assault rifle ___ the hell with what it looks like!
And ___ Point #2. What the hell is an automatic????????????? (Politicians who have
NOT served in the military want to know). Fellow patriots, an automatic piece (a pistol,
a carbine, a rifle, a submachine gun, a machine gun, or an automatic cannon) is a piece
which will begin firing when one pulls the trigger, shoves in the hammers (as per a M-2
Browning machine gun), and/or otherwise sets off the first round of the automatic expenditure
of projectiles downrange, an expenditure which will continue until either all rounds from said
rounds-container (clip, belt, or magazine) have been expended, or ___ until activating pressure
from operator has been released.
Point #3 (and I will allow everyone a break): A MAGAZINE is a devise which contains a spring
(of some sort), a spring which, in one way or another, will feed ammunition into a position so
that said ammunition can be fed into the chamber of a firearm. Some firearms have inbuilt
magazines (non-detachable), some have detachable magazines, but every one of them have
one thing in common: EACH UTILIZES SOME SORT OF A SPRING TO FORCE THE ROUNDS
(ONE BY ONE) INTO SUCH A POSITION AS TO ALLOW A SINGLE ROUND TO BE FED INTO
THE CHAMBER OF THE PIECE FOR WHICH EACH MAGAZINE WAS DESIGNED.
On the other hand, a CLIP is simply a solid piece of metal ___ no spring involved, since the spring
which puts pressure upon the rounds within the clip is a integral part of the piece into which the
clip has been inserted. (Study the design of the M-1 Garand rifle.)
As a consequence: The words CLIP and MAGAZINE or not interchangeable. Apples to oranges:
only logical in Marxist-speak.
Oh, well .....
Semper Fi!
Comment by Bob Honiker on December 28, 2012 at 6:55pm Jack, why people stay in places like New Jersey and support them with your tax money is beyond my understanding.
I am, and have been a sport shooter all my life. I bought my own shotgun when I was 16 years of age. When I left the service in 1968, I had in my posession Two 20 round magazines for an M14 rifle. When I purchased a reproduction of that (legal-for-me -to -own) rifle in 2012, I was informed that it was a felony in my state to POSESS such a magazine; so I had to destroy them. How in the world does Gregory get away with what I could NOT??
Nothing will be done to this idiot because he is an Obamanite. It's sad to know that too many are spending money buying and watching these idiots and allow them to stay on the air.
Comment by Truly Patriotic Person on December 28, 2012 at 1:23pm La Pierre loses points for suggesting Congress gets involved, though.
We don't need the Feds mandating cops in all schools! (There are more than 400 one room schools and so on)
Frankly, any Federal involvement in schools is unconstitutional. La Pierre should have stayed out of it entirely.
Comment by Virginia Gomez on December 28, 2012 at 1:19pm HE SHOULD BE FIRED AND SUBJECTED TO THE SAME LAWS THAT ANY HONEST PERSON WOULD HAVE TO OBEY. HE BROKE THE LAW AND SHOULD BE ARRESTED, JUST AS I WOULD BE.
Comment by james simpson on December 28, 2012 at 12:36pm La Pierre deserves credit for that steadfast support of our 2nd Amendment rights. There was only one sentence I would have added. When Gregory kept pounding away at the "assault" gun ban as a new idea, La Pierre should have just as steadfastly reiterated, "David, we have already tried that, for 10 years, and it failed." He did point that out, but could have been more forceful. But that is a minor nit. Wayne did a stellar job and should be commended.
