Early yesterday morning a local man here in Phoenix shot an intruder attempting to break into his house at 2am. The man was protecting his two young children and warned the intruder several times before shooting the intruder. The man died of his gun shots later, charges are not going to be filed against the man and they shouldn't be.
This is what protecting your family with firearms is supposed to be about, not what you're using but the fact of stopping someone from hurting your family. This story isn't the lone one of someone protecting their family, it just doesn't usually get an attention other than a passing note in the town it happens in. Firearms are used everyday to protect and harm, the question is why do so many use them to harm? The question never seems to fully asked about why suddenly these shootings are happening more often.
The goal of the founders was to have an armed public to defend itself from all, that included its own government should the need arise. It's never been about muskets, pistols, long rifles but about citizens being able to protect themselves from harm no matter what. The gun control people believe that taking away the guns from normal citizens will somehow reduce violent gun crimes.
The above situation could have a much different result if the criminal is the only one with a firearm because they really don't obey laws. The police can't be everywhere, they could be minutes away and that might cost you or somebody you love their life. Mass shootings are going to continue to happen, not just because of guns but the many reasons people have lost respect for human life. That homeowner yesterday morning didn't wake up thinking of shooting anyone, it just turned out that defending his family meant taking a life. I guarantee you that he wishes that didn't happen, no responsible gun owner dreams of taking someone's life.
The anti-gun lobby has painted all gun owners as crazy gun nuts who don't care about what happens to innocent people. We care deeply, it's why millions of gun owners in this country have never shot anybody but some wish to punish us all for the acts of madmen. There are no words of comfort for the victims, none and trying to take away law-abiding citizens weapons will not change that. In are free and open society banning anything has never worked, from alcohol, drugs or gambling. People who have a mind to break laws will do so, that certainly isn't going to change.
Freedom and Liberty are the cornerstones of America, sometimes those liberty's give criminals, madmen or our government to do wrong to innocent people. We have lost our way about each other, mindlessly committing acts of violence against each other for meaningless reasons. We have a broken education system, horrible mental health care, yet blame for these acts fall upon gun owners. Nobody can stop all evil from happening, until we start respecting life and each other these events will continue no matter how many guns you ban.

Comment by Terri Donohue on January 4, 2013 at 11:38am I keep hearing about the, Efficiency of Militia Bill H.R. 11654, of June 28, 1902, or the Dick Act of 1902/3. Does anyone know the truth regarding this Act? If it is infact true, why isn't the NRA or the NAGR, using it to shut gun control down?
Comment by Pat Chadwell on January 4, 2013 at 11:11am Kate its all being done to take our guns and for the white house to rule over the USA which means the brotherhood...Also when you think of rape you think of women, but in the terrorist ways it to men also.. They dont care as long as they are infidels, also age does not matter to them....
those that were killed at Sandy Hook were targets ordered to be hit just like Fort Hood and the movie theater and AZ. All order to cover something up from the people...

Comment by Debrajoe Smith-Beatty on January 4, 2013 at 8:45am Good for the man. Remembr the Dick Act, guns cannot be outlawed in America, Obama had better read the laws of this nation if he knows how to read.

Comment by k.t.borland on January 3, 2013 at 9:48pm All True, however, you left out God! Yes,Liberty and Freedom are cornerstones of America but you left out the chief cornerstone,God,upon whom this nation was founded,Judeo-christian values, morals, the rule of law,the 10 commandments,as in the 10 Bill of rights! I believe it was Thomas Jefferson who said this constitution was written for a virtuous people and no other...I look around and I see the decay of all we have wrought by no longer teachings these eternal truths....I pray God's mercy upon us!

Comment by Terri Donohue on January 3, 2013 at 9:15pm I'm a new gun owner. Not because I didn't believe in them before, but because I never felt the need. But, the country has become hostile on so many fronts, civility seems to be losing ground daily and OUR Government seems not to understand that work for us and not the other way around. So, I'm a new gun owner and actually, I'm doing pretty well during practice. There is a 6 mo waiting list for CCW permits but, God willing, I will have one soon. The most heartbreaking thing that happened today is that my Senator, the one that I counted on to support us in opposition to the other one that is lead crook in the Senate, sent me a letter in response to my concern about the 2nd Amendment , pussy footed around the question, spend 2 paragraphs on Sandy Hook, and promised me that he was concerned about keeping guns out of the hands of criminals and wanted to make sure that law enforcement had the tools to protect us. Not one word about protecting our right to own. It's so sad....
These "reported" incidents don't tell nearly the whole story.
A few years after I got married, I was surprised to get a phone call from an old girlfriend. She was calling to thank me. You see, years earlier I had given her a .32 pistol and made her promise to always carry it, since she was both drop-dead gorgeous and petite. She was someone whose appearance just shouted, "Victim!" Fortunately, she had kept that promise, even after getting married and much to her husband's displeasure. As it turned out, about an hour before her phone call, she had failed to notice the time and stayed till closing, at the mall. She was walking to her car that was a long way from the door, when she noticed three guys following her at some distance. She walked faster. They walked faster. There were very few cars in the lot, so she crossed to the next lane. So did they. She crossed back to the lane where her car was and they crossed back. By that time, they were only about 25 feet away. She reached in her purse, pulled out her chromed pistol and held it to her side, where the guys behind her could see the chrome flash. She looked back over her shoulder a second later and they were 40 or so feet away and making haste to widen the gap. Her anonymous hand-drawn sketch of the three ultimately led to their arrest on several assaults/murders over a period of years. At that time, I got another call from her. It seems that her husband wanted to talk to me. He saw the photos of the perps on the local news and recognized them from her drawings and he wanted to thank me for saving his wife's life. He broke down in tears, as he did. About three months later, I got another call from her. She called to tell me that as a result of her incident, her formerly anti-gun husband had bought a .38, had taken handgun training and was carrying all the time.
It seems that sometimes even the best intentioned people have to be hit over the head with reality, before they come to the realization that each person is his own first line of defense and the police are seldom near, when a crime is being committed.
Guns are used in self defense 2.5 million times a year, with the vast majority being cases where the gun comes out and the perps run away or where only a warning shot is fired. Furthermore, most of those warning cases are never reported - probably because, like my friend, they are carrying in a city or state where citizens are not allowed to protect themselves, under local laws. The Kleck-Gertz study found many such cases of unreported incidents.
