You must see the Andy Garcia film, "For Greater Glory." The story-telling of the Cristero War in Mexico in the late 1920's is masterful, the acting superb and the cinematography top notch.
The film is also terrifying. Are you acquainted with the term 'incrementalism?' What was perpetrated against Christians by the Calles government of Mexico is frightening because of the step-by-step deliberation with which it was carried out: Make the churches register with the government....ban the wearing of clerical garb outside church buildings...deport (or arrest or kill) foreign born priests as 'agitators'....arrest and torture priests for voicing anti-government sentiments.
By the time the Federales arrived to break down a church door and hang the pastor the parishioners had already ceded so much ground that it took an armed revolution to fight back.
In addition to the martyrs whose true stories are depicted in the film, one horrifying fact not recounted by 'For Greater Glory,' is that AFTER a truce was negotiated to stop the fighting, more than 5000 Cristeros were arrested and executed.
And consider this: Adolf Hitler was watching and taking notes in the wings.
Don't take my word for it. Go see the film and ask yourself the question: 'How many parallels can I count imperiling religious freedom in America today?'
God bless you,
