What would be the reason that the people of a so-called post-industrial nation should expect to be able to enjoy any more prosperity than the people of a pre-industrial nation?

The de-industrialization of America is a travesty, but perhaps an inevitable one. As America prospered it's citizen's expected and even demanded a higher standard of living. The steel industry, as well as the auto industry, was unchallenged by the rest of the world. As a result they willingly and stupidly gave in to all Union demands on the premise that they could just pass the cost on to the consumers. We became enamored with " the land of plenty" and it was a great ride. But, as it inevitably happens the rest of the world started to catch up and competition reared it's ugly (at least in the eyes of American manufacturing) and we found ourselves lagging behind in a lot of areas. One could not buy American steel as good as the Japanese were making, etc etc. So in order to compete we were forced to look at cheaper ways to make things, so as labor is one of the major costs we looked elsewhere - - enter the foreign labor markets. Major companies demanded cheaper prices. In the early 90's Ford ( as did others) demanded their suppliers to meet the price of the lowest bidder, even if that bidder was not able to make the product. Our once great and dominate companies became less and less American, until we now have the serious problem today. Of course government over- regulation wrecked havoc on us, but we were largely to blame, just as we were in housing market. Two things become dangerously evident: 1) without manufacturing we do not produce wealth. Wealth is only created by making things out of natural resources; and 2) if we lose our industrialization we will become an impotent country unable to defend ourselves. It was our manufacturing base that turned the tide in WW II. Without it we will become vulnerable to anyone who wants to invade us. What will we fight with- - iPhone 5's?

There is much more to this than time or space will permit, but these are points that we must consider as contributions to our demise.

The first step in re-industrialization of America is the dismantling of the federal bureaucracy which has destroyed American industry.

to make things more pathetic; income tax rate in Russia/former USSR is 9% with capital gains 13%......seems like even the Russians found out that socialism doesn't work!

You can blame any one you want, and don't forget your self. and you can start  with Judges, then Laywers, then Unions providing DEMANDS and littel Severice, AND OUR Ferdeal Family (aka as the GOVERNMENT) applys more restrictions than any othet place in the world, and TAX more if you are going to make a proffet. Corperations Pay Taxes. If they Have 1000 employes, and investors, they are paying taxes

Lou in Alabama: You’re right. And that isn’t where the similarity stops. In short: Rome found a new source of, less expensive, imported grain. (Read goods produced.) This undercut the small farmers who lost their farms and went on welfare. Proles is the Latin word for children. They became known as the Proletariat because the only things that they produced were children.

Two primary perpetrators in the decline of US manufacturing, the environmental movement and the United States government through the EPA and the political lefts support of rapacious unions.

Atlas Shrugged is now only a matter of  "when it happens", eventually the US economy is going to run out of the steam furnished by our industrialization. Our debt reflects our inability to produce the values necessary to sustain our nation, it reflects the ongoing thefts perpetrated by government on behalf of its ideologically created voting blocks. If anything is truly unsustainable in our national picture its our government and our environmentalist whack-jobs programs. Unless we succeed in turning around 100+ years of leftist treason in 2012..... you know the rest. We better get deadly serious about getting rid of leftists and other progressive scum in our government and in our culture.

Leftist ideology is a world psychosis and the left are sociopaths.

roc29.......... "and the proletariat of Rome was lulled into complacency by the Emperors free wine, a loaf of bread and the circus/gladiator events while the hoards of barbarians howled outside its walls!"........sounds familiar?, sports/booze and denial of the immense problems confronting our Republic
