Work From Home

Having recently received the latest issue of Imprimis from Hillsdale College, coupled with Judson Philips recent posting “The Greatest American Failure,” I am feeling compelled to offer you a short (?) list of reasons why we are in desperate need of a complete overhaul of our educational system.

Our children are grown now (our oldest is 30 and the twins are 26) and we pulled them out of the public school system at an early age due to a series of conflicts we had with the system.  Little did I know that the degradation and decadence of education in this country has been going on for some time longer.

In the aforementioned issue of Imprimis, the author, Nathan Harden, cited William F. Buckley and his experiences at Yale University.  Buckley graduated from Yale in 1950, two years before I was even born.  In the article, Buckley argued that Yale was even then waging war upon faith, limited government and free enterprise.  Harden points out that these days Yale, along with several other universities, host an annual “Sex Week,” during which porn is shown in the class room, porn stars are brought in to lecture, nudity in the classroom, examples of sadomasochism are illustrated, and on and on.  It also points out that Yale has educated 3 out of the last 4 presidents (both Bushes and Clinton) and 2 of the last 3 Supreme Court justices (Sotomayor, Alito, and Thomas).

Anyway, read the above article (I highly recommend it) and here is a collection of examples (with links) of the degradation and decadence of the system and the inoculation of our children in today’s “education” system.

There is no real order to anything here, just a collection of articles about how messed up the educational system has gotten in this country.

Poor U.S. test scores tied to weak curriculum. Wow, really?!

Here’s a few web sites that talk about the bias in education.  If you look around, you can find many more.

Heritage

These are only a few examples.  Our school system is in utter chaos and disarray and is doing more to harm the future of our children than help it. While it will be a long and cumbersome battle (and given the unions I do mean battle), if we truly are concerned about the future of our children and our country, then this is one front that MUST be addressed.

Gerald - Can't really say I can help you with the publisher thing, but don't give up!

In your last paragraph (above the quote from Keats), you're absolutely right. A lot of the abandonment of those principles are in evidence today, as we more and more become an indecent, uncivil society that cannot even grasp the notion and reason behind simple common courtesy.

I don't know if I've linked to any of this in this posting, but, if you don't mind, I have a couple other postings which may help illustrate and bolster what you said. One is Attitude is Everything. It originally was written during the height of all the OWS demonstrations, but in it describes how our children, as they grew up, came to realize that a lot of the "little things" make a difference (please, thank you, sir, a decent handshake, etc.) and how those "little things" have become the exception, not the rule.

Another is The Decline of Decency and Morality and give a few examples of just how rampant irresponsibility has become. I wish I could say that these are exceptions, but they are unfortunately becoming the norm.

I would like to believe that the person who wrote and narrated the palindrome represents the norm and not the exception. Unfortunately, I have to admit that I have no confidence that that is the case.

Keep on writing! You'll find a publishing source, I'm sure.

I just listened to this awesome talk by a young man. u@50 Palindrome? I guess that's what transforming a multistory outhouse into a fountain of opportunity and prosperity is all about. Thanks!!

Thanks Dwight - It's my own "invention" - the combination that is - all good things come in three's  -except dates!. I'm sure our Founding Fathers had more than an inkling and they did wonders with it.

Beauty, Ethics and Logic are the normative sciences of philosophy. They can be prioritized in 6 different ways to help define different world views. The ordering comes from the writings of America's greatest Philosopher, Charles Sanders Peirce.

Subsidiarity and Solidarity in combination can be clarified in Pope Benedict XVI's encyclical "Caritas in Veritate" - Charity in truth. I added the Chaos that is unexpected opportunities, chance meetings, and the infinite permutations and combinations we see in every day life. "e pluribus unum" combined with the opportunity to rise above one's station we Americans have always been blessed with - often in spite of ourselves.

High Touch and High Tech come from John Naisbitt's 1980 book, "Megatrends." I added High Finance as Enablement - as servant, not master as in the multistory outhouse.

This is only a small part of the work. I'm looking for a publisher to work with me on it, so if you have any ideas, let me know.

It is time to put the melody back into music * Pride into appearance * Courtesy into driving * Romance into love * Commitment into marriage * Responsibility into parenthood * Togetherness into the family * Learning into education * Service into patriotism * Nativity scenes in the city square * Civility into behavior * Refinement into language * Dedication into employment * Prudence into spending * Ambition into achievement and God recognized as our endowing Creator in the halls of government and school.

“When old age shall this generation waste,
Thou shalt remain, in midst of other woe
Than ours, a friend to man, to whom thou say'st,
"Beauty is truth, truth beauty," - that is all.”

Ye know on earth, and all ye need to know.

As an addendum to this post (though, admittedly, there could be many, many more), the University of Missouri is recognizing wiccan and pagan holidays in their effort for "inclusiveness." Here's a link from Newsmax.

Gerald, if I may ask, where did you get the 9 levels of "progressive"? That's one I haven't heard before.

It also reminds me of a palindromic speech that was written by, I believe, a 20 year old as an entry in a contest sponsored by AARP. While I'm not an AARP fan, this is a very nice speech and worth the 1 3/4 minutes. It's been out for a while so you might have seen it. If not, enjoy... u@50

Comment by Gerald V. Todd on February 16, 2013 at 9:38am

The 9 levels of “progressive” trickle down in order are: High-Finance>High Tech>High Touch>Chaos>Solidarity>Entitlement (the opposite of Subsidiarity)>Logic>Ethics>Beauty, effectively creating a multistory outhouse. "It's an ill bird that fouls it's own nest".

The same 9 equally important points reversed in priority: Beauty> Ethics> Logic> Subsidiarity> Solidarity> Chaos> High Touch> High Tech and the servant of all> High Finance.

Suddenly things begin to happen the way our Creator and our Founders intended it. Instead of money being the master, it is the servant. Instead of Beauty swimming in the outhouse pit of perversion and debt, it takes its place at the top of the Fountain of Opportunity and Prosperity, motivating greater beauty, quality, and stewardship.

If we want to claim the world is upside down, maybe its time we defined HOW the world is upside down so we can set about righting it. Where else can you flip a very tall outhouse into a fountain of prosperity?

Yes, more gov't "know it all" bureaucracy to bury us with!  Also, there are code words like "sustainability," "green," "clean energy," etc. which are all tied to Agenda 21 of which ICLEI is just a tentacle.  The bureaucrats don't use the Agenda 21 label much because too many of know exactly what they are doing.  In fact some cities and counties in my state have by pressure from the local "we the people" have successfully withdrawn their involvement with ICLEI.  ICLEI extracts an annual payment, so that alone should be enough to get citizens riled up.

And, this is all tied to the Global Warming skam and what some hope will be the "carbon credit windfall for the elites."

Stupid, stupid, and more stupid!

Catherine - Ok, I've heard of Local Governments for Sustainability, I was just unaware that it is normally preceded by ICLEI. This kind of rang a bell also. I seemed to recall that HUD has embraced this, so I went to the HUD website and almost immediately found their Local Government Sustainability Planning Toolkit. And while this isn't exactly related, I did a cursory search for agenda 21 on the HUD site, but didn't find anything specific to that. I did happen upon their Healthy Home Planning Guide. While a lot of it seemed to address low income housing, some of their goals are developing "intervention protocols" (page 20). They don't immediately define what that is. Then there is develop standards for what would be considered a "healthy" home. Of course, they get to define it, not you or I. Then there is the promotion of "green" buildings, and of course, larger and "more definitive" studies. It's a 60 page document so I just kind of skimmed it, but it's loaded with charts, pictures of poor and sick children, nice and clean modern homes, etc.

I put an article about Agenda 21 and its "local, education, etc. arm" below the ICLEI article.  All of this is on the UN website and ICLEI is just the local version of buying into the control of everything a person does everywhere.  Farmers have been fined for "collecting rain water in stock tanks" because they are not the rightful "owners" of the rain.  It is a massive attempt to as I said take control of every single thing a person does.  And, pretty soon, and why GMO seeds given to third world countries are contaminated to cause spontaneous abortions is a one of their "population control" arms.!  It is sinister, ominous and should be fought by every single American!

About ICLEI
ICLEI Logo
ICLEI - Local Governments for Sustainability is the world's leading association of cities and local governments dedicated to sustainable development. ICLEI is a powerful movement of 12 mega-cities, 100 super-cities and urban regions, 450 large cities as well as 450 small and medium-sized cities and towns in 84 countries.

ICLEI promotes local action for global sustainability and supports cities to become sustainable, resilient, resource-efficient, biodiverse, low-carbon; to build a smart infrastructure; and to develop an inclusive, green urban economy. The ultimate aim is to achieve healthy and happy communities. We have developed stable, long-term programs to support local-level sustainability and continue to develop innovative new programs to respond to issues of international concern.
Founded in 1990
ICLEI was founded in 1990 as the 'International Council for Local Environmental Initiatives'. The Council was established when more than 200 local governments from 43 countries convened at our inaugural conference, the World Congress of Local Governments for a Sustainable Future, at the United Nations in New York.
About the name
The organization's name is 'ICLEI - Local Governments for Sustainability'. In 2003, ICLEI's Members voted to revise the organization's mission, charter and name to better reflect the current challenges local governments are facing. The 'International Council for Local Environmental Initiatives' became 'ICLEI - Local Governments for Sustainability' with a broader mandate to address sustainability issues.

U.N.'s Agenda 21 is in your community

Editor's note: Listen to this column online.
Anyone who reads Chapter 7 of Agenda 21 and then reads his local comprehensive land-use plan
will immediately recognize that most of the provisions of the local land-use plan come directly
from Agenda 21. More often than not, the elected officials who adopt these plans have never
read Agenda 21, and many have never even heard of the U.N. document, signed by President
George H.W. Bush in 1992.
The facilitators and professional planners have heard about Agenda 21, but frequently claim that
the plan they are working on has nothing to do with the U.N. or Agenda 21. Don't believe it for
one minute.
Gary Lawrence, former director of the Center for Sustainable Communities at the University of
Washington, and chief planner for the city of Seattle, told an audience in London:
In the case of the U.S., our local authorities are engaged in planning processes consistent with
LA21 [Local Agenda 21], but there is little interest in using the LA21 brand. … So, we call our
processes something else, such as comprehensive planning, growth management or smart
growth.
In community after community, the same scenario is repeated. The federal government, through
the EPA or the Department of Commerce or the Department of Interior, offers special grants to
communities for the purpose of developing a vision for a greener future and a plan to convert the
vision into reality.
Typically, the local government will find a private consultant to "facilitate" the process. The
facilitator will identify a local "steering committee," carefully chosen from people who represent
various segments of the community, all of whom are known in advance to be sympathetic to the
goals of Agenda 21.
Typically, the advisory group will meet in private to lay out the framework for the process and
the goals for the finished product. When this is achieved, public meetings are scheduled to give
the appearance of public input and ownership. Rarely are these meetings ever publicized
adequately to attract the private-property owners who are most directly affected. Care is taken to
see that members of local environmental organizations and social-justice organizations constitute
the majority of attendees.
These public meetings are said to be "the visioning process." The procedures vary slightly from
community to community, depending upon the facilitator. Remarkably, however, the "vision" in
every community contains essentially the same elements: restricted auto traffic; bike trails;
walkable neighborhoods; integrated housing; high-density urban boundary zones; conservation
areas; green belts; and much more – directly from Agenda 21.
Once the vision document is complete, the next step is to convert it into a comprehensive landuse
plan, adopted by local elected officials in the form of an ordinance that is enforceable with
fines and other penalties. The plans are necessarily so long and complex that few people ever
read them, other than the professional planners and enforcement officials. Many, if not most, of
these comprehensive plans incorporate many, if not most, of the codes developed by the
International Codes Council. Here are some of the codes:
International Building Code
International Residential Code
International Fire Code
International Energy Conservation Code
International Private Sewage Disposal Code
International Mechanical Code
International Fuel Gas Code
International Wildland-Urban Interface Code
ICC Performance Code
International Existing Building Code
International Property Maintenance Code
International Zoning Code
International Green Construction Code
Here's a sample of what to expect. From Chapter 2 of the International Green Construction Code:
CONSERVATION AREA. Land designated by the jurisdiction or by state or federal
government, as a result of a community planning process, as appropriate for conservation from
development because of the land possessing natural values important to the community
including, but not limited to wildlife habitat, forest or other significant vegetation, steep slopes,
ground water recharge area, riparian corridor or wetland.
DAYLIGHT SATURATION. The percentage of daytime hours throughout the year when not
less than 28 foot-candles (300 lux) of natural light is provided at a height of 30 inches (762 mm)
above the floor.
DEMAND RESPONSE, AUTOMATED (AUTO-DR). Fully Automated Demand Response
initiated by a signal from a utility or other appropriate entity, providing fully-automated
connectivity to customer energy end-use control strategies.
This is a tiny sample of the rules and regulations buried deep within the innocent-sounding
comprehensive land-use plans adopted by unaware local officials to achieve the politically
correct label of "sustainable community."
(Column continues below)
These plans should be rejected, not simply because they arise from the United Nations, but
because they infringe personal freedom and private property rights. The implementation of these
comprehensive land-use plans effectively transfers to government the right to dictate to
individuals what kind of materials must be used in constructing their privately owned homes.
The Auto-DR provision defined above actually gives government the right to dictate the
temperature in your home, and the ability to enforce it.
This is madness! This is sustainable development! This is Agenda 21!
Local tea parties, 9/12 groups and property-rights organizations must learn about Agenda21 and
exactly what their local visioning statements and local comprehensive land-use plans contain.
Many groups are forming study committees to analyze their local plans by section and then
report back to the entire group. This way, not every individual has to read the entire plan.
If this rush to oblivion is going to be stopped, it is up to private citizens to get informed, get
involved and help get into office only those people who truly respect the Constitution and the
individual freedom it is supposed to guarantee.
