Thank you
for so many responses to the Monday column, ”The National Mindset.” There were
several hundred comments from the various distribution outlets that carry them.
Without getting too far in the weeds, it appears that the reactions were nearly
evenly split. All responses and comments are welcome, but there were a few of
them that seemed especially noteworthy. As a preamble, I see my writing as
something akin to poking a stick into the hornets’…

Sometimes
sentiments are contagious. A sense of panic among a few key people can thrust
an entire community or nation into hyperventilation. An overwhelming sense of
happiness and goodwill can infect hordes of people….look at how our generous
spirits and senses of well-being are lifted during the Christmas season. Ann
Coulter’s latest book, Demonic,
explores the mob mentality that frequently prevails in certain high-tension
situations.…

Most writers
submit their holiday copy for the day of or the day before the holiday. I’m
writing this column reflectively…after the fact. I admit it. I do not express
my thanks often enough. I frequently approach the Lord with my troubles,
problems, issues and questions, but not to thank Him for His blessings and the “teachable
moments” that spring from my trials. I do not thank those whom I love for being
who they are. I do not thank them for their…

One of my favorite
pastimes is woodworking. Because of my fading eyesight and diminishing digital
dexterity, I have begun to restore furniture as a reasonable alternative. The
first few pieces that I tackled were some that my grandfather, a master
carpenter, had built. These included a birch dresser, an oak whatnot stand and
an oak chair. My purpose as a refinisher is to restore the structural integrity
of the piece but to allow the nicks, cuts and…

They are a
vanishing breed. Those who produce provide the jobs and the wealth for a
growing nation and economy. Their numbers have diminished for a number of
reasons. The government that should encourage them to thrive often hinders or
harasses them. The regulatory environment has morphed into a maze of
unfathomable and ill-conceived barriers. Attempts to legislate sound business
practices have transformed into insurmountable hurdles that limit…

The best
outcome for the “Super Committee” is for there to be no outcome at all. If they
devise a plan to cut the $1.2 trillion over ten years, you can wager your mule,
cow and eldest child that the “savings” will be end loaded in the out years. With
no plan from the lackluster 12 the $1.2 trillion in cuts will be spread evenly
between Defense and Domestic programs…but again over the next ten years. So
what’s the difference? The auto-cut feature…

Sleight of
hand is commonplace in the halls of government power. Our superior elites
continuously dazzle us with their “now you see it, now you don’t” routine of
promises and broken vows. The pathways of United States’ history is littered
with the shards of broken trust as our political masters pledge to be
responsible….and fail, fail again and again. The most glaring recent example is
the so-called “Super Committee.” I’ve witnessed more integrity…

We have
heard the refrain many times, ”if this legislation (or rule) can save just one
life, it will be worth it.” Bull! Do-gooder legislation, regulations and rules
can rarely be empirically identified as saving lives, but they always lead to
more restrictions and oppression. If our political leaders and their
bureaucratic toadies were serious about wanting to protect and improve our
lives, they would get out of the way and allow the ingenuity of…

Until recent
times every American student has learned the axiom of United States’
constitutional government that our 3-headed federal construct is limited by
checks and balances built into the system. The three branches—executive,
legislative and judicial—exercise certain powers and oversights that in theory
offset one another. Many people err, however, when they consider the branches
equal. They are not. For example the shoe and the foot are both…

There are
two salient items about this column you should know. First, this piece is
somewhat of a collaborative effort because I raised the topic during my
Wednesday radio show (11/9/2011), and several folks chimed in with their
valuable observations. Second, I’m submitting this piece in the middle of my
constitutional restoration series because of its timely application for the
task we have before us. Today’s column is titled “Consistent…

Prior columns of mine have attempted to lay the groundwork for restoring constitutional government and principles to our United States of America. Obviously we must elect ONLY candidates who agree with our goal, and we must initiate primaries and targeted campaigns against those who do not. With two chambers in Congress and three branches of government, the task may appear to be insurmountable. There is a light at the end of the tunnel, however if constitutionalists (not merely the GOP as…

“Small” is a
relative term. If one is 6 feet tall and plays in the NBA, you would be small.
If you are 6 feet tall and in the 6th grade (11 years old), you
would not be small. Small portions of food are variable as you might note
whenever you attend a family gathering. Small monthly payments can…

The previous
three columns have examined the foundational tools that are necessary for
restoring our nation to its constitutional government, but more importantly to
its constitutional roots. We have witnessed for the past century or more our
political leaders’ failure to honor and defend our constitutional principles.
We have no reason to believe that they will have a series of epiphanies and
move to the light from their locations on the dark side. Many…

Some people
derive immense joy from solving puzzles. They commandeer the entire dining room
table to hold thousands of tiny pieces of cardboard … all of which are strikingly
similar. They spend endless hours attempting to reconfigure the picture
featuring the white kitty in the snow bank. Each little piece is uniquely
shaped and hued in order to limit its application to one distinct position in
the picture. While I am puzzled by those who enjoy such a…
