During last Saturday’s radio show, we talked about characteristics we’d like to see in the new candidates who are stepping forward for 2014 campaigns in Georgia – about the need for Next Generation leadership and for candidates with the experience to represent us not only in our communities and our state, but to the rest of the world.
Experience – of how the world works, and what has been done to…

What do we expect?
We weren’t expecting a tornado last week. But when it struck the Adairsville area, even before the call went out for help, the community was already gearing up. On Facebook, churches were organizing and their members getting ready to serve - they didn’t let differences in religion get in the way, with the Church of God, Methodist, Catholic, Baptist and other congregations all coming together and asking: what can we do? They were packed wall to wall, and…

The number one problem the United States is now facing isn’t the debt. It’s the lack of leadership. This is not news – conservative news-watchers have been telling us for a long time: for 4 years, in fact. We will see how it plays out in the next few weeks, in the President’s inauguration speech on January 21 and the State of the Union address on January 29. But let’s also think about what we want to see.
For those trying to make ends meet, the graphs and charts and speeches of…

Christmas means many things. To me, it means family. For 15 years Sandra and I welcomed over 100 foster and adopted children into our home, and we always tried to make Christmas special for them. They made projects at school – pencil holders, paperweights, and Christmas ornaments that would remind us every year of the efforts they had put into making them. Sandra and I did everything we could to have biggest program, to bring them truckloads of toys. We worked with charities to help not…

In the presidential campaigns now coming to their conclusion, there have been opposing political and philosophical views about what is the government’s obligation to provide what every citizen needs and deserves, the size of government needed to accomplish it, how can we afford it and who will pay for it, and what should be the extent of government involvement in our lives – and what any of this means in light of the looming national debt crisis and the impending “fiscal cliff”. Whose vision…

Today – the 68th anniversary of the WW II D-Day invasion of Normandy – a group of elite Civil Air Patrol cadets will be learning about the important leadership decisions that took place that day. It is part of the case study program about leadership that I developed called "One Man Makes A Difference" for CAP’s annual Advanced Training Flight, being held this week at the U.S. Marine Corps base in Albany, Georgia.
I created the program about seven years ago, using…

The beginning of this Memorial Day weekend will find me at the national cemetery in Canton, just as I have been there in each of the six years since it opened. One of my sons, who will be home on leave from the Navy, will be with me. From the parking area, as you come up to the crest of the hill, there is a stone wall bearing the symbols of all the branches of armed service on it – a wall as solid and steadfast as the memories of those who now occupy the ground around it. There are a lot…

Today I am announcing that I will run for the new Senate seat for District 52. This new district was created in last year’s redistricting, as a result of increased population in Northwest Georgia. As this region grows, it will need strong conservative leadership and effective decision-making to make the most of these new opportunities. Instead of revisiting what worked for the passing generation, this is a call to leadership for our generation and for our children’s. I want to be that…

It’s a good idea to keep your eye on the ball – and the whole field you’re playing on, as well.
For the past few years, many of us have been watching and waiting for our country’s economy to stabilize. Various reports – usually from the government – are crafted to give the impression that there are more jobs now than last year, and for those who have managed to hold onto their homes, that the value of real estate is…

Good business plans often have a category for contingencies.
Due to our debt crisis, the U.S. has precious little in the way of resources for a contingency. While we are clearly aware that having a $15 trillion deficit is a big problem, we are being directed away from the urgency of our situation and the need to identify how to address it.
The…

What do all-of-the-above strategy, red tape & ObamaCare have in common? All end up in the Supreme Court. Government transparency has disappeared and Barbarians are at the gate. As Rome collapsed, Caesar said he’d do all of the above–but red tape doesn’t hold a government together: citizens do. Let’s talk about Barbarians and kingdoms, noon Sat “The Hayden Collins Radio Program” Newstalk 1270 WYXC

What does it take to go against the odds? What kind of risk would you take to defend your family and your country? We have heard many stories about bravery in battle, and those who have protected others during disasters, we applaud the heroes and their achievements – and then check Facebook? What will it take for us today to recognize how threatened is what we believe America stands for, and what are we willing to do about it? Worse than the fluctuations of the worldwide economy is the…

We as citizens of the United States have a responsibility: exercising our right to vote and helping to make a decision that will impact not only you but the entire nation. I have accepted that responsibility – by taking part in early voting – because I know that my vote counts.
If we feel that there’s no leadership we can trust, each of us reacts differently. As we come to Super Tuesday, you can be active in this process, dormant, or a mercenary. Those that are dormant have…

One of the critical things when under attack is to know who the enemy is. And is not.
If you listen to many of the national speeches being made about what is imperiling our country, you’ll hear that wealth redistribution – through bigger, stronger government, and through changes in who is taxed and how much – are the necessary counter-attack. It’s implied that the cause of our current crises is social inequality. But it is not.
What threatens us now is the…

Bringing new energy projects to Bartow County offers economic advantages for our residents and the businesses that are already here, and an incentive to attract new businesses. It also provides us with an opportunity to be more self-sufficient and less vulnerable in a shaky world economy. And due to recent…

There are some things you can prepare for, and some things you can’t. Every year we prepare for hurricanes and storms, and get extra food and extra water. Just before this past New Year’s, Rome, Georgia, took the brunt of a tornado with a lot of trees down, a lot of damage all over the place. But they didn’t have to declare it a disaster area because Rome was a little prepared. They had their CERT teams go out and help assess the damage, they had aerial photographs so they knew the range…
