I find it quite strange, reading comments on the TPN about how the Republican Party has been drifting further and further left over the last few years, in an attempt to win over a bloc of Democratic voters - whilst alienating its' own core vote. In Britain, the Conservative Party has been doing exactly the same thing, with exactly the same result. In the 1930s, in Europe, it was called appeasement, and those who supported it said that it would lead to "peace in our time". (Neville Chamberlain, British PM, 1938) What it lead to was World War II.
Seems to me it doesn't matter whether you're dealing with a schoolyard bully or a power-hungry politician - giving them what they demand doesn't encourage them to settle for that and leave you alone. It guarantees that they'll be back for more.
