My apologies for the tardy answer but I'm just now fingding your question about L. C. Oates.
I don't know the gentleman but somewhere in the distant past I'm sure we have a common ancestor. The Oates seem to have come into the N. C. area very late 1600s and spread out from there across the deep south. There were a few misguided generations that seemed to have strayed from the path and wound up in the northern states (poor souls). Mainly we have been seeded across the gulf states as far as Texas and Oklahoma.
