The Seven Day survivalist

Sherry and I have joined the ranks of the prepared. At least, we are working on it. We went to Costco the other day to begin stocking up and realized the obvious: we need a plan.

The question is, where to begin so that we can make progress and not get totally frustrated. After all, Rome was not built in a day and I’m not coming home next week with a seven year stockpile of foodstuffs.

I decided seven days would be a good starting point. My assumptions are as follows:

The most likely scenario where we would need to put our preparations to use involves a natural or man made disaster with an interruption of our food commerce for a week before we can get help.

I’m also assuming a total interruption, but my house survives.

First water. We have a family of five. Assuming 6 bottles of water a day for each of us, for 7 days, that equals 420 bottles. Some very observant person has just realized my math does not add up. You are right. I doubled the amount of water as we have three dogs as well. Plus, when I am planning, I want to know what the bare minimum is. I just don’t want to go with the bare minimum.

I need 21 meals of canned foods (working on that)
Plus 50 energy bars

A really advanced first aid kid.
5 flashlights and batteries (or the crank kind)
1 hand powered radio
100 lbs dog food
90 day supply of medications (with at least 2 weeks left)

3 boxes of wetwipes. (Like fish, after 3 days, I stink)
Trash bags (trash still accumulates)
Chamber pot (without water a toilet is no good)

This is certainly more than a 7 day supply but it is a start. What did I miss?

I've been looking at dried and freeze dried foods. Primarily from http://beprepared.com
This might help in decision making.
I have a son and grandson who are diabetics. Anyone have any suggestions? Insulin goes bad after a couple of months if not sooner, esp. with no refrigeration.

a company called WaterOz has soluable minerals. Strange as it sounds, my mother is diabetic, and was on medication to regulate her blood sugar. I sent her a bottle of Chro-Van-Zin, which was specified by wateroz as possessing blood sugar regulating properties. After she began taking the minerals, she lowered her sugar so far, that she had to go to the doctor, he tested her and asked what she was doing different, and when she told him, he instructed her to stay on the minerals, and took her off the meds.

The mineral mixture is Chromium, Vanadium, and Zinc. I checked the website for wateroz, and it appears that the FDA, made them stop advertising the supplement as a Blood Sugar Regulator, accordingly, I couldn;t find the product listed. You may want to contact them and see if they still have any they would sell.

NOTE-DISCLAIMER-This is NOT aa recomendation for medical advise. Every body is different, and I cannot, with any degree of certainty, claim or infer that this is an approved treatment, or that it will work for you. You should consult a qualified medical professional before seeking any treatment or therapy.

I have often wondered when thinking about this preparation: what would it take, in a pinch, to produce insulin, or isolate antibiotics that are effective against some bacteria?

Maybe the bug-out plan has to include ham radio in the mix, so you can locate where insulin supplies are being produced as soon after any event as possible?

that is where I've purchased quite a bit of my food storage ... prices are good and I've never had any problems with them at all
I forgot 2 bags of charcoal. Especially if this is in the winter, a couple of hot meals would be good.
Judson triple the number of bags of charcoal!
can't burn inside ....use sterno
judson do you think small cans of sterno be better? also a website I found to be looking good is thereadystore.com which has everything from fire starter -which is magnsium with flint and and a striker- to canned or dry food and awesome first aid kids. they have sales every friday.
Just don't try to use it indoors, unless you're suicidal - ;-)

And make very sure youkeep them bone dry.  If Bar-B-Q briquets get damp they emit a toxic gas.

Toilet paper!
