I have been told by a few this would come in handy if things were to get really bad. I realize food and water are number one but I have purchased things like toothbrushes, toothpaste, personal care items etc from the dollar store. The reason ,if someone has not brushed their teeth in a month might trade you food for a toothbrush.

Want something to trade, of real value? Salt, believe it or not!
We are one of the few mammalian species that do not conserve it! We sweat! And die without it, rather quickly! Ever notice that dogs pant to cool? So they don't loose their salt!

Something not to hoard: gold! Who needs it! Only if a breakdown of fiat currency occurs, and then only long after! When barter becomes too unwieldy!

Barter is widely used in the "developed" world, even where cash is used. If you read classified ads in Holland, for example, the price listed is usually cash only. no VAT. You want documentation? Sure! Price goes up! Or, barter is always accepted! They have learned correctly that they cannot accept the tax burden.
thanks Vern...yeh the gold thing we couldnt afford to buy it anyway..who needs gold or money if its worthless..thanks this is what we need more ideas..awesome..I have purchased some extra salt already..
Gold will most likely not be worthless. In order for it to be entirely worthless, the entire world could have had SHTF. Silver is a more useful investment with regards to PMs. Investment in precious metals is merely a diversification of your 'survival' portfolio. Gold is bound to raise in price if the economy collapses. This has been seen before and it would happen again.
LOL Pam, Judson and I used to watch Jeremiah on Showtime about life after "The Big Death". It looked alot like the scenario we're all preparing for. Bartering, Trading, traveling on foot.
Loved that show, Ironic huh.
This is true. Soap would be agood thing as well. Keeping clean in todays world may be more important than it was then.
Is salt one of those staples that never expire as long as it is kept dry?
I would think so. I have seen salt stored for cattle for along time, and apeared to still be in good shape.
Toilet paper
I think toilet paper is going to be the next currency . stock up now while its cheep
Hypothetically, if it came to that situation, where possible, duplicate crops planted at each site. Thisway, if you loose one, you can fall back to the others and not lose a staple crop - redundancy
