Friday Top News Executive Summary

Media Editors: GDP ON SOLID FOOTING: “The U.S. economy grew at a solid 3.2% annual rate in the first three months of the year, a far better outcome than expected, overcoming a host of headwinds including global weakness, rising trade tensions and a partial government shutdown. The advance in the gross domestic product, the broadest measure of economic health, marks an acceleration from a 2.2% gain in the previous October-December period, the Commerce Department reported Friday. … It was the strongest first quarter growth rate since 2015.” (ABC News)

MORATORIUM ON OFFSHORE DRILLING: “The Trump administration is hitting pause on its ambitious and controversial plans to expand offshore drilling in the Atlantic. Newly confirmed Interior Secretary David Bernhardt said the agency has indefinitely sidelined its exploration of offshore drilling options as it grapples with a recent court order that blocks similar drilling in the Arctic.” (The Hill)

GREEN NEW DUD: “A new study from the American Enterprise Institute questions whether the Green New Deal would have any real impact on climate change at all — leaving it little more than an effort to dismantle industry. The AEI report breaks down the GND into bite-sized policy proposals, assessing not simply the cost, but the proposed effectiveness of each legislative item to address the core goal of the GND: reducing American carbon emissions to a ‘net zero’ by 2050. The researchers’ ultimate conclusion? ‘It is not to be taken seriously.’” (The Daily Wire)

JUDGE HELPS ILLEGAL IMMIGRANT CIRCUMVENT JUSTICE: “Federal prosecutors charged a Massachusetts judge with obstruction of justice Thursday, saying she prevented immigration agents from arresting an undocumented immigrant after a state court hearing by allowing him to leave the courthouse through a back door. … The indictment accuses District Judge Shelley Richmond Joseph and a court officer, Wesley MacGregor, of allowing the immigrant to leave the courthouse, out of a federal agent’s sight, and lying about it later.” (USA Today)

BALTIMORE MAYOR UNDER SCRUTINY: “FBI and IRS agents on Thursday raided the home and city hall offices of Baltimore mayor Catherine Pugh as part of an investigation into possible public corruption… Pugh took a leave of absence from her position earlier this month after it was revealed that she made $500,000 selling copies of her Healthy Holly children’s-health book to the University of Maryland Medical System (UMMS) while sitting on the system’s board. It was later revealed that health insurance provider Kaiser Permanente paid Pugh $100,000 for 20,000 copies of the book while the company was seeking a lucrative contract to insure the city’s employees.” (National Review)

JUDICIAL ACTIVISM ON ABORTION: “A federal judge in Washington state on Thursday blocked a Trump administration rule that would prohibit taxpayer-funded family planning clinics from referring patients to abortion providers. The preliminary injunction bars enforcement nationwide of a policy that was due to go into effect on May 3 over the vehement objections of abortion supporters who have decried it as a ‘gag rule’ designed to silence doctor-patient communications about abortion options.” (Reuters)

BANK OF AMERICA’S BIG ABORTION LIE: “2ndVote has released documentation challenging Bank of America’s defense of its contributions to Planned Parenthood. In a letter recently obtained by 2ndVote, the president of the Bank of America Charitable Foundation apparently responded to a customer concerned with the bank’s support for Planned Parenthood: ‘Bank of America does not make any direct grants to Planned Parenthood.’ Bank of America did contribute over $50,000 in what appears to be so-called ‘matching gifts’ to the abortion giant through its foundation in 2017.” (2ndVote)

WOODSHED PREPARES FOR scumbag-JAMES COMEY: “A ‘bombshell’ report on former FBI Director scumbag-James Comey is coming out in two weeks, attorney Joe diGenova said on Wednesday. … ‘The Horowitz report is coming out in May or possibly early June,’ Joe diGenova, a former U.S. attorney for the District of Columbia, said. He was referring to Justice Department Inspector General Michael Horowitz’s Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act investigation. ‘There’s another report that everyone has forgotten about involving scumbag-James Comey alone,’ diGenova said. ‘That will be out in two weeks. That report is going to be a bombshell. It is going to open up the investigation on a very high note, and there are going to be criminal referrals in it.’” (Washington Examiner)

INCARCERATION DROPS: “The number of people serving prison or jail sentences in the United States dropped 10 percent over the decade ending in 2017, the Department of Justice said Thursday, the latest evidence that a lower crime rate and changing sentencing policies are having an effect on the number of people behind bars. After decades of increases, the latest figures show that the incarceration rate — the number of prisoners compared to the U.S. population — is at the lowest level in 20 years, according to the Bureau of Justice Statistics.” (NBC News)

Congress must play a critical role in securing the US Border

by Roger F. Noriega

{ } ~ Congress is pushing back on President Trump’s decision earlier this month to cut US aid to Central American countries from which the vast majority of would-be migrants originate… In a bipartisan appeal, House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Eliot Engel (D-NY) and ranking Republican member Michael McCaul (R-TX) asked Secretary of State Mike Pompeo to work with Congress on deciding whether and how to restart aid to El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras, the so-called “Northern Triangle.” I testified before that these US-supported programs help stem the tide of violence that spurs desperate people to abandon their countries. It is good news that there is a strong bipartisan consensus supporting US aid programs in Central America. As part of the US’s overall border strategy, about $500 million a year is allocated to address gang violence, poverty, corruption, and other factors that push tens of thousands of Central Americans to flee each month. Aid programs have led to dramatic declines in violence, extortion and general criminality. Anti-gang programs in the region have helped law enforcement agencies crack down on violent gangs that menace every major US community. By bolstering security and improving conditions for doing business, US assistance helps create new jobs and better wages in areas struggling with poverty. Members of Congress have done their homework; indeed, they helped design the US “Northern Triangle” strategy and imposed conditions on what local governments must do to qualify for US-funded programs. Members and staff of Congress also have conducted on-site visits to measure the effectiveness of US aid, leading them to conclude that such projects are not only worthy, they are more important than ever… Fund and Build the Wall.

Official: U.S. Far Behind China, Russia in Modernizing Nuclear Arsenal

by John Grady

{ } ~ China and Russia had their money on winning asymmetric advantages in conventional and nuclear forces in the last decade, and now the United States is playing catch-up… in modernizing its sea, air and land nuclear forces, the Pentagon’s top policy official said Wednesday. David Trachtenberg, the Pentagon’s deputy undersecretary for policy, said the United States put off modernizing the three legs of its nuclear deterrent for almost 20 years, he told USNI News following a presentation at the Brookings Institution. “In the 2000s, we skipped a generation” in modernizing the triad – ballistic missile submarines, bombers and ballistic missiles. He added that the United Kingdom and France, both nuclear powers and NATO allies, reduced their weapons stockpiles while continuing to modernize their nuclear forces during that same time. The United Kingdom has sea-based ballistic missile submarines; France has both submarines and aircraft capable of delivery of nuclear weapons. At the same time, North Korea, India and Pakistan established themselves as nuclear powers. “Most of the nation’s nuclear deterrence was built in the 1980s or even earlier,” Trachtenberg said during the presentation. The triad was “aging into obsolescence.” Trachtenberg said in answer to a question during the forum that the United States is not engaged in a new arms race with Moscow or starting one with China, but “Russia is re-scoping” its nuclear and conventional forces, including using low-yield nuclear weapons to get its way in a confrontation…

Chasing universal coverage: An interview with health policy expert James Capretta

by Matt Winesett, Max Frost, and James C. Capretta

{} ~ Nearly a decade after the passage of the Affordable Care Act, another sweeping reform of the United States health care system could soon be in the works… Democratic presidential hopefuls are laying out their plans to reduce the roughly 28 million uninsured Americans to zero, with proposals ranging from Medicare-for-All to a public option. But in doing so, are they overstating the extent of the problem? In a recent article in RealClearPolicy, AEI’s James Capretta and Joseph Antos say the answer may be yes: The number of Americans truly unable to obtain health insurance coverage is much smaller than the topline number of 28 million would suggest, and this affects which policies are best-suited to improve health insurance coverage in the US. In this episode, we talk with James Capretta about his article and its implications for US health policy. We also discuss what the conservative vision for health policy should look like, what lessons can be gleaned from other countries’ health care systems, the Trump administration’s plans for lowering prescription drug prices, and much more. James C. Capretta is a resident fellow and holds the Milton Friedman Chair at the American Enterprise Institute, where he studies health care, entitlement, and US budgetary policy. Previously he served as an associate director at the White House’s Office of Management and Budget, where he was responsible for all health care, Social Security, welfare, and labor and education issues. He’s also served as a senior health policy analyst at the US Senate Budget Committee and at the US House Committee on Ways and Means.

The Satanic Temple Has Evolved Into An Anti-Trump Movement & Leftists Are Flocking To It

by Michael Snyder

{ } ~ The Satanic Temple is the perfect religion for progressives. You can believe anything you want, as long as you hate what Donald Trump, Christians and conservatives believe… Unlike the Church of Satan, the Satanic Temple doesn’t even believe in a supernatural entity called Satan. Instead, they celebrate Satan as “the ultimate rebel”, and they relish in using the symbol of Satan to greatly upset Christians. The Satanic Temple was founded in 2013, and from the very beginning, it was clear that they were primarily a political movement. In fact, they openly tell prospective members that the only real requirement for joining is to believe “in the political and secular actions” of the group…Previously, Satanism in America had always been a shadowy underground movement, but the Satanic Temple has changed all that. Instead of avoiding the public eye, they believe that their rebellion against conservatives and Christians “requires a level of political participation”…The organization grew rapidly after it was founded, but if scumbag/liar-Hillary Clinton had won the 2016 election that probably would have put a damper on their political activism. Just like their hero, the leaders of the Satanic Temple appear to be experts in deception, and they are leading thousands upon thousands of people down a very dark path.

Glenn Beck Explains the Biggest Left-Wing Lie About America

by Jarrett Stepman and Fred Lucas

{ } ~ “The Right Side of History” is a podcast dedicated to exploring current events through a historical lens and busting left-wing myths about figures and events of America’s past… On this week’s episode, hosts Jarrett Stepman and Fred Lucas discuss recent comments by scumbag/liar-nObama administration Attorney General scumbag-Eric Holder, who recently said on MSNBC: “Exactly when did you think America was great?” “It certainly wasn’t when people were enslaved. It certainly wasn’t when women didn’t have the right to vote. It certainly wasn’t when the LGBT community was denied the rights to which it was entitled,” scumbag-Holder said. Lucas and Stepman discuss what makes America great and exceptional, and why critics such as scumbag-Holder are wrong to focus entirely on its faults. Also, Lucas had a chance at the recent Conservative Political Action Conference, or CPAC, to ask political commentator Glenn Beck about the left’s biggest distortion about American history.

Trump Moves Closer to Full Unwind of scumbag/liar-nObama Iran Deal

Political Editors: President Donald Trump took another step this week in working to unwind Barack scumbag/liar-nObama’s terrible Iran nuclear deal. In a statement, the White House announced, “Trump has decided not to reissue Significant Reduction Exceptions (SREs) when they expire in early May. This decision is intended to bring Iran’s oil exports to zero, denying the regime its principal source of revenue.” Recall that last year Trump granted six-month waivers to eight countries, temporarily exempting them from the sanctions imposed against Iran following the president’s withdrawal from the Iran nuclear deal. That exemption period has come to an end, and Trump is following through on his commitment to isolate the Iranian regime so as to get the mullahs to give up their pursuit of a nuclear weapon.

Predictably Iranian officials responded by threatening to close the Strait of Hormuz, an area through which a fifth of the world’s oil trade travels. China, one of the country’s granted a sanction exemption, indicated that it is unlikely to end oil trade with Iran. Foreign Ministry spokesman Geng Shuang argued, “China’s cooperation with Iran is open, transparent, reasonable and legitimate, and should be respected.”

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo warned, “We’ll no longer grant any exemptions. We are going to zero across the board. We’ll continue to enforce sanctions and monitor compliance and any nation or entity interacting with Iran should do its diligence and err on the side of caution; the risks are simply not going to be worth the benefits.” He added, “How long we’ll remain there at zero depends solely on the Islamic Republic of Iran’s senior leaders.”

Pompeo then reiterated, “The goal remains simple: to deprive the outlaw regime of the funds it has used to destabilize the Middle East for four decades and incentivize Iran to behave like a normal country.” That’s a great goal, but frankly it’ll take regime change to achieve it. ~The Patriot Post
