Newt Gingrich is leaving the Presidential race. This is not a great shock. For a few weeks it has not been a question of if but when.
Now that Newt is gone, that leaves Romney. The more important question is, where do we conservatives go from here?
Even though Romney has now won the nomination for all practical purposes, he is still a liberal. Just a few days ago, he reaffirmed his support of a progressive income tax.
The bad news for conservatives is he is the nominee. We will go to the polls and vote for him. We may be violently ill while we do it but at least he is not Barack Obama and at least he has the chance to do better than we expect.
We conservatives are not going to support Romney in the sense he wants us to. We are not enthusiastic about him. He did not reach out to us and in fact, he made it a point to win this nomination without us. Most of us will not be out there with signs. Most of us will not be manning phone banks for him or rushing to his campaign headquarters to volunteer.
So what do we do?
The good news for conservatives is that Romney is no leader. He is a manager, not a leader.
There is a silver lining here if we conservatives will exploit it.
We must put conservatives in Congress.
With conservatives in congress, we can control the agenda.
If you understand Romney, you understand how this is possible. Romney is a product of the Harvard Business School. As one friend of mine says, they teach a “paint by numbers” methodology.
That is Romney.
Decisions are not motivated by passion. His decisions are the equivalent of solving for x. Every problem has a solution. It is clinical and detached.
In Romney’s world, patriotism does not factor into a decision. It is not that Romney does not love this nation. He does, but not in the passionate way most conservatives do.
We conservatives must work to get more conservatives into Congress. We have enough RINOs and moderates as it is.
Last year, the House under John Boehner spent 3% more than it did when Nancy Pelosi was the Speaker.
Much of the Republican leadership did not even notice this nor did it even bother them. For them it was business as usual.
We cannot take business as usual. That is why we must throw ourselves even more into the Senate and House races.
For Newt Gingrich, we cannot simply allow him to ride off into the sunset. He has too many good ideas. Even when Gingrich’s campaign was sliding down to the single digits, it was his ideas, not Romney’s ideas that Obama attacked.
Gingrich has led a conservative revolution before. He did it in 1994. Even though he will not be the nominee, we still need his leadership skills.
Where do we conservatives go now that Romney is the all but certain nominee?
We go back and we fight!
I continually find it disturbing that so called conservatives always ignore the one candidate who poses a real challenge to the RINO romney. Romney is not the nominee, he does not have the delegates, he won't in August and we will have a brokered convention. The one candidate that will work to restore America is the one that never gets mentioned in the MSM, yet he continues to amass delegates. He just picked up 122 in Missouri. That candidate is Ron Paul. If you consider yourself a conservative, you do have an alternative to big government, big spending, higher taxing and pro-FED romney. Ron Paul. If Americans keep voting for the establishment puppets, we're going to keep getting what we always got, until we have nothing left. So, I'll say it again: Ron Paul for President.
I'm glad that at least Romney is far more conservative than the last GOP nominee that I had to vote for. That's not to suggest that Romney is conservative. It's just that compared to McCain, Romney "looks" like a paragon of conservatism.
If anyone knows of someone highly placed in the Romney campaign, I would like to send Romney a copy of my book. Everyone who reads it tells me that it presents the most persuasive case for the FairTax that they have ever heard or read. It might help get Romney off top dead center on the progressive income tax. I just want to make sure that it gets to someone close to Romney.
John Gaver, Thanks for the great idea of giving Romney a copy of your book on the Fair Tax. I myself don't have any contacts, but if someone did it would be helpful to all Conservatives. I, for one, appreciate your taking a positive attitude on the inevitable. Perhaps if some of the other posters would consider taking a more positive attitude, we could make lemonade out of these lemons instead of pissing and moaning because their favorite candidate couldn't cut it.
If you look at it as just a petty matter that a "favorite candidate couldn't cut it," then you're asleep. Wake up! Soros... (you know, the guy who wants to destroy the USA)... actually said he'd prefer Romney to Obama. And, if that isn't bad enough, Carter said he wouldn't mind a Romney presidency. Those two facts alone should scare you witless.
What scares me even more is another four years of Obama. Romney was not my first choice , actually Newt was. But realistically Newt screwed up. So we take the next best way of getting Obama out of the White House. We stand a better chance of keeping Romney's feet to the fire with the loss of our support in 2016 then we do with an Obama in office. So when I hear people saying they will not vote for Romney because their choice of candidate didn't win, it's a no brainer...that's giving a vote to the enemy. If you read some of the comments on this thread, you will find people that have basically said, "my choice didn't work our so I'm taking my marbles and going home." Frankly I don't care what Soros or Carter say, do you really think they speak the truth or is it a political maneuver?
Excuse me, but could you enlighten me as to how Newt screw up? Is it because we didn't provide enough money for him to use the same kind of attack dogs the Romney/Obama camps unleashed?
Sorry, but I don't buy your story, Jack. If a person really supports a candidate, they don't put him down in the same breath.
The truth is that Romney, as much as you profess, will not beat Obama, because his heart is not in it to strongly go up against him. That has been the worry by many of us. Deep down he has the same ideology, without BHO's hatred.
I and many others believe that Romney can beat Obama. As I said, you can either pick up your marbles and go home or stay in the fight to defeat Obama. That's up to you. If you don't know how Newt screwed up, you obviously didn't follow the debates. I felt that continuing to support Newt was a road to nowhere, so I will support the one I think can take back the White House. As the man said "you got to know when to hold 'em, know when to fold 'em."
I'm sure Christie, Ryan and now Perry, who are all eyeing a 2016 run, all believe Romney's victory, too. Try to connect the dots. There's a line of candidates licking their chops already. I think they are more aware of the insider straw polls than we are.
Please be specific, at what debate did Newt screw up? Was it when he repremanded the media, gave his visionary solutions, where would that be, since I watched every single debate? Oh I know where,.... when he was ignored by the MSM, that must be it.
Only the pundits and the uninformed screwed up when they called him the man with the baggage. Yes Newt's vice was that he knew the real deal in the-do-nothing-congress which he tried to clean up. And the thanks for that was.... bringing him up on trumped up charges, that were dismissed. Oops, I forgot about his dalliances, the same that many past presidents are also guilty of. I see it clearly now!!
My point is, if you want your candidate to win, let him win on his own merits, without bringing the others down in the gutter. Gee, sounds very much like what the Libs. do.
I agree! What brought Newt down was nothing Newt did or said. It was Mitt's multimillion dollar smear campaign in Florida. He used the same tactics against Santorum, after he'd killed Newt. Gee... what a great guy Mitt is, huh? Real President material there. Trading one lying, dirty-player for another... how is that a step up?
How can any thinking Conservative trust a person who uses vicious half-truths and lies to achieve his ends before he's POTUS?
Saying all that, I will vote Republican in November. But, as far as I'm concerned, the only way it will achieve any Conservative ends will be to get that Muslim-loving, America-hating (and destroying) Obama, his Marxist czars and that horror-story Holder out of office. If Obama wins again, we could very well be looking at a Supreme Court Justice Holder... what a terrifying thought!!
Agi Yaeger, No, that sounds exactly like what you do. Maybe your need to reread your earlier posts.
He's giving up on Wednesday.
Why do you believe the media lies? Newt has not said that yet! Why are you so willing to give up? Maybe you were never a part of we the people who want the America we love back again, but are just willing to go along with the flow. That's the reason we have the trouble we do with Obama, because in 2008 there were too many that were led like sheep to the slaughter just like you sound now.
I only said that the way I did to hopefully shock you back to reality. Please join we the people because I believe down deep in your heart you are really one with us. Let's not give up yet.
