Just in case anyone has any doubts, the era of people running for office out of a spirit of public service and putting the nation first is officially dead.
Todd Akins, the idiot Congressman from Missouri who managed to offend almost everyone with a brain and singlehandedly blow the GOP’s chances for winning that Senate seat has announced he is going to stay in the race.
From USA Today:
GOP Rep. Todd Akin apologized today for comments he made regarding rape and vowed he will stay in the U.S. Senate race in Missouri.
"I made that statement in error. Rape is never legitimate. It is an evil act," Akin told former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee in a radio interview. "I used the wrong words in the wrong way."
Akin continued: "I don't know if I'm the only person in public office that suffered from foot-in-mouth disease. ... I'm not a quitter."
President Obama denounced Akin's views as "offensive," and the remarks by the six-term congressman were widely condemned by Republicans, including presidential candidate Mitt Romney. At least two prominent Republicans called on Akin to give up the Senate race.
In an interview Sunday, Akin told KTVI-TV in St. Louis that a woman's body could prevent pregnancy in the case of a "legitimate rape." The congressman later said he "misspoke."
Akin is running against Democratic incumbent Claire McCaskill in a Senate race that could help determine which party controls the chamber.
GOP Sens. Ron Johnson of Wisconsin and Scott Brown of Massachusetts called on Akin to step down as the party's Senate nominee in Missouri. Romney stopped short of that, saying the comments were "insulting" and "inexcusable."
Control of the Senate could come down to this race and Todd Akin, whose ego is much bigger than his brain, may cost the Republican’s control of the Senate.
Turns out the Democrats actually wanted Akin to win, as opposed to a real conservative like Sarah Steelman.
From the Washington Post:
There’s a reason why Democrats spent over $1.5 million trying to help Akin win his three-way primary. He was the most conservative candidate in the field — and the most unpredictable one. He shook up his campaign staff late last year. He recently released a head-scratching and jumbled campaign ad. And Democrats have already launched a microsite highlighting his controversial statements that won’t play well with moderates. (“America has got the equivalent of the stage III cancer of socialism because the federal government is tampering in all kinds of stuff it has no business tampering in,” Akin once said.)
Todd Akin needs to go. Every Republican in Missouri should be calling his campaign headquarters today as well as the Missouri Republican Party telling them to get rid of this idiot.
We must win the Senate this year. Akin is making that job far harder.

Permalink Reply by Gary Jackson on August 20, 2012 at 2:16pm So you think if a woman is raped, something in her body keeps her from becoming pregnant? Thousands of rape victims will disagree.
The democrat party spent over a million dollars to help elect this idiot not because he's "conservative" but because he's an IDIOT. Now thanks to this IDIOT, the Tea Party is being smeared. Like we're all a bunch of ignorant fools. Evidently some are.
Akin MUST go. He's become a distraction and turned a gimme seat into a loss.
Permalink Reply by Joe Irick on August 20, 2012 at 2:52pm I am listening to Akin right now on Sean Hannity explain his 'mistake'. He makes about the same amount of sense that the 'toe-tapper in the men's stall' did. Akin must GO AWAY!!! His explanation is worse than the STUPID statement that got him here. Just because Biden gets a pass does not mean we should allow it! Akin MUST GO!!!!! (think about it, he knew the baited question was coming, and this was his response? he is a brain dead idiot, go listen to his explanation)

Permalink Reply by JC Patriot on August 20, 2012 at 4:06pm While Akin may in fact be a moron at his choice of words, some of you are responding as if you think he really believes the uterus has a brain and can react in some way to terminate a pregnancy. Talk about absurd!
Steelman may be the better choice, but at least use some common sense when considering that he may have been talking about the stress response of catecholamine release preventing implantation from taking place due to decreased blood flow to nonvital organs. The statistics seem to bear out that something is preventing a larger percentage of pregnancies from occuring from rapes. He obviously doesn't know the mechanism, but I don't see anyone else suggesting possible explanations other than the "intelligent uterus" ridiculousness.
Until a valid reason can be found to explain the lower rate of pregnancies than expected, any other response that ridicules the possibilities could be called just as absurd. Is it relevant if rape victims disagree -- where did they study reproductive medicine?
Permalink Reply by Danny Kirkpatrick on August 22, 2012 at 10:41am I my view of this, if we force every GOP person who miss speaks to drop out of the race, we will be doing the lefts job. I need to research this guy to see if he is really an idiot, or just a person who miss speaks. But, if the left thinks we will turn on anyone who miss speaks, they will do everything in there power to create situations where our people will be tripped up, then we will force our own people out of the race. We must not have knee jerk reactions, lets slow down and take a good look at this and any othe situtions like this one.
Permalink Reply by JC Patriot on August 24, 2012 at 2:40am Well, since people lie, you just agreed that some of those claims are "illegitimate."
And statutory rape, if consensual, can be used in the statistics to actually increase the percentage of pregnancies from rape, if one wanted too for any political reason.
Permalink Reply by Cold Warrior on August 20, 2012 at 2:05pm Sorry, but I and many conservatives disagree.
There's a good discussion going on over at Redstate.com about this.
Here are two statements in a thread by "Jack_Savage":
I completely understood what Akin was trying to say
Jack_Savage (Diary) Monday, August 20th at 9:09AM EDT (link)
And if the people who are calling for his resignation would put away their fainting hankies for a moment, they would too.
Here is the situation Akin was trying to address:
“Dr. Jones? Hi, it’s Buffy. Skip and I had too much chardonnay at the club last month, so he and my Daddy’s lawyers agreed that I was raped. Of course I won’t press charges, but really need to schedule a…family planning appointment. Does Thursday work for you?”
That would not be a “legitimate rape”. Better language next time? Yes, I would advise it.
As far as a woman’s body reacting differently when being raped, I have no idea. Akin should not have commented on the physiological aspect of it unless he knew what he was talking about. Big friggin’ deal.
Abortion is abortion. Pregnancy resulting from rape is extremely rare, and the Akin was responding to what would turn out to be a gaping loophole in abortion laws.
Either we support this holocaust as a people, or we don’t. It’s about damn time we decided.
Then we as a country deserve the stupidity and vacuuity Democrats as leaders
Jack_Savage (Diary) Monday, August 20th at 11:56AM EDT (link)
At least we know where to lay the blame.
Women aren’t upset at credible allegations of rape against Bill Clinton. They aren’t worried that John Edwards was banging his videographer at the same time he was running for President. Anthony Weiner? No problem!
But Akin? Beyond the pale.
Got it.
We really are the "stupid" party. Hardly any strategic thinking. Coupled with hardly any team work and hardly any guts. No courage of our convictions. Obama is cool with letting live babies who survive an abortion to just die in a trash can, but Akin is insensitive?
Why is it that we allow the Liar Media to set the narrative? We have a president who advocates infanticide for babies that do not survive abortions, as does the likes of Barbara Boxer and Nancy Pelosi, yet we allow the Liar Media to ignore those facts and help them focus on a poorly articulated position about an extremely emotional and complicated ethical question. The real question was simply, "Do you believe that abortion should be allowed in cases of rape." The answer to that can be, for some, "No." For others it's much more complicated.
So, what do some of our us conservatives do? Pile on the Republican who won the primary fair and square. Instead of piling on the Liar Media. The Dems give us death panels via Obamacare, but Akin is the devil?
I'm listening to the radio right now, ABC News, and, of course, the lead stories are all about Akin. And guess who is "helping?" Republicans.
When are we going to come up with strategies to defeat the Liar Media?
Thanks,
CW
Permalink Reply by Gary Jackson on August 20, 2012 at 2:21pm The media didn't lie, Akin said it. He's a moron.
The reason the idiot at Red State claims pregnancy from rapes are rare is two fold. One, many rapes go unreported, and two, hospitals treat for pregnancy if a woman is taken to them.
What Akin said, that if a woman is raped her body somehow rejects the rapist's seed, is idiotic, uninformed, and crazy.
Akin must quit. He must be replaced by someone with a working brain. He's obviously not intelligent enough to be a United States Senator.
It's disgusting to see anyone try and justify his statement, or suggest he remain in the race. Totally disgusting.
Permalink Reply by Christopher on August 21, 2012 at 9:45pm There are lies, damn lies, and then there are statistics.
think about it, you've just been raped, whats the first thing your gonna do after going to the police? either go to the hospital, where they'll automatically give you the 24 hour emergency contraceptive, or get it yourself. I suppose you could count that as the woman reacting to her emotions, but its hardly a 'natural defense mechanism'
also the link you've posted is bollocks, it's literally pulling numbers out of thin air, and all it says is that some rape pregnancies occur, and if we introduce a magical deus ex machina factor of x% failure rate due to emotional trauma which would bring our expected pregnancy rate down to the actual pregnancy rate, then our predicted pregnancy rate from rape and actual pregnancy rate from rape match up. QUELLE SUPRISE!!!!!!!!!!!
