It has been a month since 17-year-old Trayvon Martin was shot and killed in Florida.  The man who killed him, George Zimmerman has claimed self-defense.  The professional race hucksters are out beating the drum on this case and proving once again, the most dangers spot in America is the space between them and a TV camera.  Justice is working in the case but something else, more important is going on.

What is it?

It is another example of the left trying to attack the right of a citizen to defend himself.

Wrapped up in this controversy about the homicide of Trayvon Martin is the issue of Florida’s “stand your ground” law.

The left does not like that law, which may be reason in and of itself to like the law.  But there is more to it.

Liberals have a problem with Americans being able to help themselves.  It does not matter whether it is self-defense or even preparations for a disaster.  The left always wants us to be dependent on the government and in the case of Hurricane Katrina; we saw how well that worked out.

The left does not like it that Americans can be armed.  Real Americans like that.  I for one find it comforting to think that if someone breaks into a house with people in it, the last sound the burglar could hear is the sound of a shotgun being jacked before the homeowner sends him a very clear and permanent message.

The “stand your ground” law is a rule that relates to what is known as the duty to retreat.  Under American law, you are allowed to use force to defend yourself or someone else.  You may use deadly force if you reasonably believe deadly force is about to be used on you.  A majority of American states have some variation of the “stand your ground” law.  The minority of states say that before you can use deadly force, you must try to retreat if possible.   That is a really dumb law, since among other things you cannot outrun a bullet.  All it does is force people who legitimately defend themselves to face criminal prosecution for not retreating first.

All the “stand your ground” law does is say there is no duty to retreat.

The left has a famous saying, “never let a crisis go to waste.”  We are seeing that in the Trayvon Martin homicide.  The “stand your ground law,” which the liberals are attacking actually has nothing to do with this case.  There is another law that says in a case, if you are the initial aggressor, you cannot claim self-defense.   According to the media reports, Zimmerman followed Martin and made contact with him, even after the 911 operator told him not to follow Martin.   A digitally enhanced copy of the 911 recording made by CNN allegedly has Zimmerman making what sounds like a racial remark right before the shooting.  If proven, that could go a long way towards proving premeditation in a murder case.  Again, the “stand your ground” law has nothing to do with this case.

The left has an obsession with making citizens vulnerable.  From asinine gun control laws to bad ideas such as the duty to retreat, they have one goal.  They want to make people totally dependent on the government.

Last year, we saw the ultimate results of that policy in Britain.   Britain has long ago banned guns.  So last year when riots flared out of control and Britain’s police could not handle them, citizens were left defenseless.  British citizens were so desperate to protect themselves, sales of American baseball bats rose by a staggering 6000%.

Obviously the British do not understand the words of a wise man of the American west that said, “God made all men.  General Colt made them all equal.”

As for the Trayvon Martin homicide case, contrary to the hysterical howling of the race hucksters, justice is coming.  The night of the shooting, the only thing the police had as the claim by Zimmerman that he had shot in self-defense.  I realize the Constitution means nothing to liberals, but in order for the police to arrest Zimmerman that night, they would have had to have probable cause.   That was something they did not have.

So the cops did what they are supposed to do.  They investigated.

Now, a special prosecutor has been appointed and the matter will be presented to a grand jury on April 10th

Unlike the hucksters who have been rushing to the nearest available camera, I’ve been a prosecutor.  I spent ten years of my legal career trying cases for the State and putting criminals in jail.  Unlike people such as Al Sharpton, I’ve tried murder cases.

Any lawyer who has tried more than two or three cases in the criminal justice system has come across the “rush to judgment” defense.  Johnnie Cochran made it famous in the OJ Simpson case.  The rush to judgment defense is simply that the cops were under pressure to solve the case and did it quickly.

When law enforcement is pressured to move on a case when it is not ready, you get a successful rush to judgment defense.  In Florida, it looks like law enforcement is going about this the right way and having their ducks in a row before presenting the case.

Of course the hucksters don’t really care whether law enforcement gets it right.  All they are interested in is their five minutes in front of the camera.

All the left is interested in is trying to further destroy the rights of Americans to defend themselves.

You are right. As a former Emergency Service P.O. I have been on many events where on reading about it in the press the next day I've had to ask myself, Where did that happen? The news report was so screwed up.

Tom, it will especially tragic if the Left succeeds in using the foolish act of one lone man to deprive all Americans of their G-d given right to self defense with a firearm. That is what is really going on here.

You are wrong about cops wanting gun control.

Most will tell you that you are your own best first line of defense and they engourage responsible gun ownership. The problem comes from irresponsible use of firearms, like this case!

I surmise that more than anything, the special prosecutor was assigned the case because of the high profile it commands. But I may be wrong...

BTW: I am the moderator that regularly disagrees with Judson!  :)

I could provide you some links on the gun control question...

You're right though, for all Zimm knew, the kid was just
out walking or jogging, which is still legal in most areas!

And since he had no badge...no authority...

Jeff :

Jeff it is not authorized to be running or jogging in a "gated community" unless you live there or are there as a "guest" of a "resident".

Ron

I was wondering.

Judson,

It was Samuel Colt that made men equal, not General Colt.  But, what the hey!!!

Semper Fi!

Donald Mack:

Colt did go far to "Make Men More Equal". Men like Tom Horn ( 1900) was a small man 5' 2", as was Kit Carson went up against vicious men but both of these pioneers carried rifles and was good enough shot to be "very equal" with the 6' 6" guys.

SemperFi,

Ron

Does anyone know how the aggression started - Trayvon insulting an elder, accosting, apearing to rob, or, Zimmerman being the aggressor.

Without this, you cannot judge and even comment intelligently.

Example:  Walking in the mall, approaching gang of Upper level Teanagers shoulder to shoulder forcing everyone to step aside or get knowked on their a**'s through shoving and pushing.

Who is the aggressor here.

Not I says the old chap with the shotgun walking cane.

There's so many different scenarios as to what could have happen, it's not possible to guess.

The cops told Zimmerman not to follow him, but he could have been hanging back and following just to know where/what the kids was doing until the cops arrived,

in which case the kids could have got angry because he was being followed and attacked Zimmerman,

In Tennessee, if a person is shot in the front part of their body, it's serves as evidence the person was facing and possibily advancing toward the shooter, or course a shot in the back rules out self defense.

I haven't hear how/where the kids was shot, someone else may know.

That's all a guessing game...

Let's don't get wrapped up in stuff we just don't know (;-)
