It has been a month since 17-year-old Trayvon Martin was shot and killed in Florida. The man who killed him, George Zimmerman has claimed self-defense. The professional race hucksters are out beating the drum on this case and proving once again, the most dangers spot in America is the space between them and a TV camera. Justice is working in the case but something else, more important is going on.
What is it?
It is another example of the left trying to attack the right of a citizen to defend himself.
Wrapped up in this controversy about the homicide of Trayvon Martin is the issue of Florida’s “stand your ground” law.
The left does not like that law, which may be reason in and of itself to like the law. But there is more to it.
Liberals have a problem with Americans being able to help themselves. It does not matter whether it is self-defense or even preparations for a disaster. The left always wants us to be dependent on the government and in the case of Hurricane Katrina; we saw how well that worked out.
The left does not like it that Americans can be armed. Real Americans like that. I for one find it comforting to think that if someone breaks into a house with people in it, the last sound the burglar could hear is the sound of a shotgun being jacked before the homeowner sends him a very clear and permanent message.
The “stand your ground” law is a rule that relates to what is known as the duty to retreat. Under American law, you are allowed to use force to defend yourself or someone else. You may use deadly force if you reasonably believe deadly force is about to be used on you. A majority of American states have some variation of the “stand your ground” law. The minority of states say that before you can use deadly force, you must try to retreat if possible. That is a really dumb law, since among other things you cannot outrun a bullet. All it does is force people who legitimately defend themselves to face criminal prosecution for not retreating first.
All the “stand your ground” law does is say there is no duty to retreat.
The left has a famous saying, “never let a crisis go to waste.” We are seeing that in the Trayvon Martin homicide. The “stand your ground law,” which the liberals are attacking actually has nothing to do with this case. There is another law that says in a case, if you are the initial aggressor, you cannot claim self-defense. According to the media reports, Zimmerman followed Martin and made contact with him, even after the 911 operator told him not to follow Martin. A digitally enhanced copy of the 911 recording made by CNN allegedly has Zimmerman making what sounds like a racial remark right before the shooting. If proven, that could go a long way towards proving premeditation in a murder case. Again, the “stand your ground” law has nothing to do with this case.
The left has an obsession with making citizens vulnerable. From asinine gun control laws to bad ideas such as the duty to retreat, they have one goal. They want to make people totally dependent on the government.
Last year, we saw the ultimate results of that policy in Britain. Britain has long ago banned guns. So last year when riots flared out of control and Britain’s police could not handle them, citizens were left defenseless. British citizens were so desperate to protect themselves, sales of American baseball bats rose by a staggering 6000%.
Obviously the British do not understand the words of a wise man of the American west that said, “God made all men. General Colt made them all equal.”
As for the Trayvon Martin homicide case, contrary to the hysterical howling of the race hucksters, justice is coming. The night of the shooting, the only thing the police had as the claim by Zimmerman that he had shot in self-defense. I realize the Constitution means nothing to liberals, but in order for the police to arrest Zimmerman that night, they would have had to have probable cause. That was something they did not have.
So the cops did what they are supposed to do. They investigated.
Now, a special prosecutor has been appointed and the matter will be presented to a grand jury on April 10th.
Unlike the hucksters who have been rushing to the nearest available camera, I’ve been a prosecutor. I spent ten years of my legal career trying cases for the State and putting criminals in jail. Unlike people such as Al Sharpton, I’ve tried murder cases.
Any lawyer who has tried more than two or three cases in the criminal justice system has come across the “rush to judgment” defense. Johnnie Cochran made it famous in the OJ Simpson case. The rush to judgment defense is simply that the cops were under pressure to solve the case and did it quickly.
When law enforcement is pressured to move on a case when it is not ready, you get a successful rush to judgment defense. In Florida, it looks like law enforcement is going about this the right way and having their ducks in a row before presenting the case.
Of course the hucksters don’t really care whether law enforcement gets it right. All they are interested in is their five minutes in front of the camera.
All the left is interested in is trying to further destroy the rights of Americans to defend themselves.
I agree wholeheartedly and that's part of what is wrong with the collective 'us' as American's. We hear snippets and sound-bites released in increments (and some facts withheld or released for political reasons by the various 'news' media) and we reach quick, often unfounded opinions, MYSELF included. Which is why, if you read my post or any I usually proffer here, I always say 'it appears' or 'seemingly' or 'on the surface' because at this point, that is all we have been told or have learned. But, as usual, when the death of a black person by SEEMINGLY wrong conclusions reached by a white/hispanic/asian/martian occurs, cue The REV-EREND Al Sharpton knocking folks down to jump in front of every camera he can find to race bait and incite hatred and discord. This could very well be the spark that initiates the marshall law (sp) many of us have feared and I still say it will be THE CASE Holder uses to disarm us.
I you all want to find out what was really going on, you need to go into the story on your home page..
follow the blogs, if you can stand to listen to the filth out of their mouths..
I am afraid this will be the "ONE" to set off riots across the country.. Looting, killing, rape, and much more.
Sharpton and his gang have arrived, bus/loads coming in every hour..I wish they would allow the local
law enforcement to do their jobs. Obama didn't help much this morning, speaking about it.
Try reading again..his FATHER lived there; he was visiting his father. The Skittles he got at his father's request; the tea was for him.
If Zimmermans race is white-hispanic, what race does that make Obama bin Lyin??
Part Muslim, part Communist, all Liar???
An armed citizen has the option of either standing his ground or retreating, depending on the situation. Against an attacker that is armed with anything other than a gun, the citizen should retreat but be prepared to use force to defend himself. We are not the army! Retreat is ALWAYS the smart choice.
Any attacker, seeing that the citizen is armed with a gun and continues the attack deserves what he gets according to common sense, but according to the law, he is himself wronged if he is not threatening the citizen with deadly force. You cannot shoot a strongarm robber!
Our first clue in this case was that the shooter does not have a permit to carry a concealed firearm.
Which is better: to die while waiting for a policeman that almost certainly will arrive too late, or to live and have to defend against accusations of acting without probable cause? If you are ever put in this situation, for God's sake be sure that there is tangible evidence that your life was truly threatened. This was the shooter's mistake. No evidence of threat, therefore no threat! He will do 30 years for manslaughter, at least!
yes.. a cop is only the first responder...an after-the-fact witness... but I agree.. sounds as if Zimmerman used his gun because he could... he thought.
I read an article last night, said Zimmerman had a permit to carry concealed. That was on the msn page.
What a reporter SHOULD do is to MAP out the following:
location of Martin's house (where he left from to go to the store)
location of store he went to
location of where he was heading (one report said it was to some ones house and not his home)
location of where he was first seen.
location of where he was shot
Reporters don't know how to do their job or be objective. In fact they do know how to do their job and they do it. Their job is to use any situation they can to justify their opposition to self reliance.
Does anyone see the media's reaction here as similar to the Gabby Giffords incident. Use it to promote anti-gun, anti-self protection.
