At this point, it should not come as a surprise to anyone that Rick Perry, the Governor of Texas is looking long and hard at a Presidential run. Many have been predicting this could happen and some here on Tea Party Nation have said it would happen.
What does this mean for the Tea Party?
Rick Perry in some circles is a lightning rod for criticism. Interestingly enough, even though he is not a declared candidate, Rick Perry came in second in the recent TPN presidential poll, beating out Tea Party favorites Sarah Palin and Herman Cain, though bagging less than half the votes of Michele Bachmann.
Perry has strong support. He has been supportive of Tea Parties in Texas, speaking to a number of them. He has also been criticized for being a former Democrat and being soft on immigration.
Perry showed some backbone this week, ignoring pressure from Obama, Mexico and the United Nations and refused to block the execution of a Mexican national who had been convicted of a brutal rape and murder of a teenaged Texas girl.
Perry’s entry into the race will cause Tea Party members to make a hard choice. The Tea Party vote is split with Michele Bachmann clearly in the lead, followed by Sarah Palin, if she runs and Herman Cain.
We would all love to see a Tea Party candidate win but the question is going to be can someone like Bachmann win the primary and then win the general election against Obama?
Bachmann is clearly winning the Tea Party vote but what many in the Tea Party do not realize is that the Republican vote is not made up exclusively from Tea Party members.
The GOP establishment does exist and there are GOP moderates. The polls that show Mitt Romney in the overall lead among Republican candidates is not simply an exercise in creative writing. The $18 million dollars Romney just raised was not monopoly money.
There are vested interests that want to see an establishment candidate elected. We in the Tea Party can rant and rave all we want about how terrible the RINOs are but the simple fact is they do exist and in many areas control the GOP.
A Perry candidacy really throws a curve ball into the race. For Michele Bachman, as the leading Tea Party candidate to win, among other things, she would need the RINO vote split among the leading RINOs.
That isn’t happening.
Tim Pawlenty’s campaign is flailing like a fish caught by a Minnesota fisher on a frozen lake. At this point, the only real question is, when is he exiting the race. Newt Gingrich’s campaign limps along. He will stay longer but his campaign is doomed too. Jon Huntsman is zipping along on his motorcycle in the Utah desert but so far his supporters could probably all fit on the back of his motorcycle.
That leaves Romney, who is to put it mildly, a very seriously flawed candidate.
Right now, in a one on one campaign, Bachmann probably loses to Romney. But do not underestimate Bachmann. While everyone thinks of her for her fiery Tea Party rhetoric, she has been quietly assembling a team of serious Republican insiders and is building a formidable campaign.
Enter Rick Perry. Many establishment Republicans know how flawed Romney is, but do not have an alternative to him. Perry could provide that alternative. More than one analyst has said that Perry might be the one candidate who could appeal to both the Tea Party and the establishment.
For many looking at the numbers for 2012, Texas cannot be ignored. Obama has said he believes Texas is in play in 2012. Is that just talk? Perhaps. But as we have said on TPN before, Texas is crucial. There is simply no way ANY Republican candidate can carry the day without Texas.
Texans will protest and say that Texas will never go blue. Among the live Texans, that is very true. But when you count the dead Texans that will be voting, the fictional Texans that will be voting, the illegal Texans that will be voting and the blue Texans who will be voting early and often, victory is not certain.
Perry does ensure that a Republican will win Texas with a fraud proof majority. As we move into the serious part of the election season, that is something conservatives cannot ignore.

And for providing a post of the Legislative shut down on the immigration bill (and the bill to keep Obama off the Ballot in 2012 by Representative Berman) most of you should have followed that close enough to know it by heart.
Also, the Federal Government pulled the same damned thing on Georgia last week about their immigration bill. Either drop it or we pull the funding for dredging the Savannah River to 48 feet so the super container ships can enter to the docks.
It is all on internet. Do not get hung up on TPN Forums - there is a wealth of information surffing the bite waves daily.

Permalink Reply by CoChair on Judson, after my comments, U might say Ray U are alittle over the top for TPN. Well, maybe so and I'll simply elude to what , as an outsider sees in postings. Some of my comments will try to enlighten people about the relationship that Texas has with Mexico and just how it does sometimes influences our attitudes in addressing the immigration issue.
I've said this before but there just maybe one indiviual who has joined this morning that needs to read it. Those of us who has supported Perry since 1992 has been having to listen to either the left wing liberals(highly numbered in Austin) or what many calls the fringe element of the Republican Party, Libertarians. I've utilized the phraze of "fringe element" and then will support it by stating what status does Paul have within the Republican Party. The Texas Republican Party attitude is little different, if any, than all the others in our party, look and you'll find them on the fringes and very seldom in leadership roles. Some of us who are alitle more knowlegeable in our current state politics will openly question whether Paul can win in the 2012 election due primarily the changing of our district boundaries and these voters are more knowleable to the Libertarian views, in the past he has been running on the Republican ticket. The Republicans in our state are not ultra right wing and certainly not share that Libertarian view. I've utilized the term "snippet" before and I'll utilize my own snippet by saying that my fellow "True Blue" Texan Republican will not support legalization of drugs, prostitution or taking the bulls eye off Iran. Althoiugh I've taken a shot at the Libertarians U also have to consider the others who take shots, those who have in the past supported his opposition, Hutchinson, Medina or White as examples. But lend urself to an old statement that U can't correct ur mistakes if U do nothing and Perry has done things, not always agreed to by many of us. Unlike what I've seen posted we look at the big picture, overall accomplishment and if his intents were benificial to our state. Some would dissagree to benneficial, again those are fringe elements and their objections needs to be scrutinized, we could also refer to as irratants.
Im going to only list some of the things posted on this site that the Republicans in Texas has been reading for soime 20 years. We have investigated every issue and in every case there are plausible reasons why we ignore them. Im not saying to you to ignore them, only the millions of us who support Perry have already investigated and do so. See if U havent't seen some form of posting on these issues, Gardisil, Trans Texas Corridor, NAFTA, Agenda 21, NWO(these must be the Perry vampires), The Dream Act(In no way comproble to Reads), The TSA Bill, The Sancuary City Bill, News with Views(church)(Discernment Ministaries), Republic Broadcasting Network. MY GOD, MY GOD, MY GOD!!! Just how can people be so vulnerable?
I left my last issue for it is the topic Judson wrote on, Bachmann's declaration on solving the border issue. If anyone can say that this has not been the theme of every responsible Republican "SECURE THE BORDER" and then we can address all of the issues, green cards, get in line to return, deport, BLAH, BLAH and Perry has made the same statements. Shoul anyone of U take into consideration that Mexico is Texas's No. 1 trading partner, U might understand how any Texas Governor might walk on eggshells. Pull up a map of our Southern border, U just might see cities from Brownsville to El Paso that depend on cross border traffic, millions of Texans are effected by our business relationship and many of those living in those cities also have family in Mexico. When there was an issue that required toughness Perry stood up, especially on crime by illegals, evidenced by just 2 months ago he refused Mexico's and this administration's desire to commute a death penalty, that guy is dead today, what position would good Republicans take. Perry has time and gain pointed out what we need to do and nothing will ever be done and just saying "I will place a person side by side" has no idea what it is going to take. By someone posting some site showing something being said, look at the intire context or U will be taking the word of Al Sharton that because Perry mentioned the annology of a "Black Cloud" in dealing with ecconomics, as giving a racist statement, but then to there are alot of vulnerable soles out there, I know there are some for I've been reading them.
