Yesterday, an iconic American event was attacked and America itself was attacked again. Again America is left to react to an attack on us.
There are the obvious questions, such as who did this and why?
Some of these questions can be immediately answered. Others will take more time.
Perhaps the most important question we can ask is will it happen again?
Unfortunately the sad truth is we will be hit again. It will happen sooner or later. It will probably be sooner than later.
There are two reasons why we will be hit again. First, we have a determined enemy who hates us. Second, we have a government that is not committed to protecting America.
It is a pretty safe bet right now that this attack was carried out by an Islamist. It was a well-coordinated attack. In its publication, Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula called for just this kind of attack.
While the government and media have fallen all over themselves to downplay this fact, there is a twenty-year-old Saudi student being detained as a “person of interest.” Person of interest in a nice police term that is used for someone who is not under arrest and therefore does not have to be read his Miranda rights and who hopefully will not lawyer up.
Barack Obama could not force himself to use the word “terrorism” in his speech last night and the FBI right now won’t call this a terrorist incident.
If it wasn’t terrorism, what the hell was it? Those were not a bunch of explosives left over from the Revolutionary War that suddenly went off because a bunch of runners were pounding the pavement!
Those were bombs packed with ball bearings designed to cause maximum carnage.
The reason we will be hit again is because our government is not committed to destroying our enemy. Radical Islam is our enemy.
Some in the far end of the Liberty Movement will start screaming about war mongering “Neo-cons.” Nothing could be further from the truth.
Since the first World Trade Center attacks, our government has had the do anything but win strategy. Bill Clinton treated terrorist attacks as a criminal justice matter. Memo to the left: Terrorists do not fear indictments or even incarceration. Incarcerated terrorists are just an incentive for other terrorists to take hostages and try to secure the imprisoned terrorists’ release.
George Bush thought he could win the war on terror by bureaucracy building and nation building. Both were abject failures.
We need the Reagan strategy.
What was that?
Ronald Reagan realized something very significant about the communists. They could not compete with the free market so he spent them into oblivion. No shots were fired to win the cold war.
We need to first recognize our enemy and then come up with a strategy to destroy them. This is an ideological war. While sometimes that will mean guns and bombs, neither will destroy an ideology.
The values of the west, most of them good, some of them not so good are what will destroy radical Islam. In the west, we fall all over ourselves not to insult Islam.
We can go down the list of things Islam has done to the west. During the height of the Cold War, the Soviets came up with something called the Brezhnev doctrine. It said, “What’s ours is ours. What is yours is negotiable.” Radical Islam and perhaps even non-radical Islam holds to the same belief.
They believe that once a nation becomes Islamic it cannot have Islam removed from it. However, non-Islamic nations may be conquered or otherwise taken over.
Reagan knew that America had to stand up to the Communist threat. Bill Clinton wanted to ignore the Islamist threat. George W. Bush just wanted to hold the hand of the Saudi king and Barack Obama just wants to bow to him.
As we mourn the victims of Boston, we need to make a solemn vow that we will not allow this to happen again.
The only way we make sure this never happens again is to identify our enemy and then craft a strategy to totally defeat that enemy.
Pray for Boston!
Amen, Judson. Pray for the survivors. Also, pray that the knee jerk reaction doesn't play into political agendas to make us all victims of this terrorist act.
I fear there will be more attacks.
As of this morning:
Thanks for your post. I agree with your assessment. There is just one minor correction that I would offer.
You say that we won the cold war with no shots fired. This is not exactly true. The Korean and Vietnam wars went a long way to help break the back of communism.
Some will say that we lost the Vietnam war. This is not true. We succeed in accomplishing the mission which was to "contain communism"; this we did. At the time there was great fear that if we did not fight in Vietnam, the communist would easily move into Indonesia and on to Australia (the "domino effect").
Even today, just imagine the much greater threat we would be facing from the North Korean leaders if they were operating from the whole of Korea. As it is South Korea is a huge capitalist country acting as a great buffer to North Korea and China. I don't think there could be a greater testament to the success of a free market capitalist system than that offered by the side by side contrast between North and South Korea.
As a young combat soldier at the time, I knew and understood this and was told what our mission was. Once the communist understood that the U.S. and it's allies were willing to spend blood and treasure to obstruct their conquest for domination, we had the upper hand for future cold war tactics.
I offer the following analogy: I once was called for jury duty. For three days in a row I and the others showed up faithfully ready to do our duty but no trial occurred. Finally on the fourth day the judged released us with this statement: I want to thank you and commend you for serving because by each of you demonstrating your willingness to serve, it inspired the defendant to change his plea to avoid trial. The hot war with the Soviet Union and China was avoided because we showed up in Korea and Vietnam.
Judson, thanks again for you posts; I always enjoy them.
What is the excuse before there where drone? Wait, where is islam's excuse since the 13th year of it's inception? islam is spread by the sword and this is just an example. There are only 2 kinds of people in islam, believers and non-believers. The non-believers have one option, submit or die.
Why do you feel you have to apologize and make excuses for a people that have been murdering in the name of Baal for centuries?
It's not our job to figure out who are the crazies and who aren't. They should get their own countries under control. In the meantime, we must defend ourselves.
When you discuss our military intervention and Islamists, do not forget Bosnia. In Bosnia we fought to protect a Muslim minority against genocide from Christians. Or to mention that the people we fought with, not just against, in Somalia, Iraq, Afghanistan, etc. were all Muslim as well. Their hatred of us is not based in our fighting against Muslims, it is based on the fact that we do not allow ourselves to be ruled by Islam.
