Mark Twain famously said, "No man's life, liberty or property is safe when Congress is in session."  Congress is in session and once again, our liberty is at risk.  This time, it is a bill called the DISCLOSE bill.

The DISCLOSE bill is the liberal's response to the Supreme Court's decision in the Citizens United case.   This bill would limit spending on political issues by corporations but not by Unions.   It exempts large political groups from it's burdensome requirements yet buries small groups (like your average Tea Party group) with regulations that could put the groups or even individuals in legal jeopardy.    The DISCLOSE bill has exemptions for media corporations (I.E. the main stream media) political speech, but not for the new media and bloggers.

This bill is another obscene attack by the left on the First Amendment.  It is a bill designed to shut down political speech by mostly conservative groups, while allowing mostly liberal groups to continue on.  This bill must be stopped.

Once again, we must take time to call our Senators and tell them to stop this attack on the First Amendment.  Harry Reid is going to try and end debate on this bill either late today or tomorrow in what is called a cloture vote.  We only need 41 votes to defeat Reid and this bill.  Call your Senator today and tell them to vote against this bill every time it comes up, including voting against cloture.

In addition to calling your Senators, here are a few others to call that might help stop this bill:

  • Senator Olympia Snowe   (202) 224 5344
  • Senator Susan Collins (202) 224 2523
  • Senator Blanche Lincoln (202) 224 4843
  • Senator Lindsey Graham (202) 224 5972
If all 41 Republicans vote against this bill, it will die.  Chances of death improve if one or more Democrats can be persuaded to vote against it (which is why Blanche Lincoln's name is in that list of people to call).

Two years ago, would we have believed it would be necessary to call our elected officials every week, just to save our basic constitutional rights?  This is why elections are important and this is why the elections this fall are so important.  But they are still over 90 days away.  Today, we must call again so that the Senate does not repeal the 1st Amendment!

Tea Party Nation is a corporation. All large Tea Party Groups are Corporations of one kind or another. This bill can effectively silence you and I speaking here! Supporting this bill can silence this movement: perhaps one of the primary objectives.
You need to read the FAQ. Further attacks against Tea Parties may not be tolerated, Brian.
Why are you here?
Gee, Brian!
Tea Party Nation is a corporation, I think!
Most tea party groups are, I think! Don't you wish to be able to speak here?
Don't you want me to be able to speak? I don't understand!
Free speech is important, I think!
May I add that this treats individuals differently based upon their affiliation with one group or another. If I belong to the NRA or the ASPCA, then these rules do not apply. If a law applies, then by the constitution, it should apply equally to ALL, not ALL ULNLESS YOU BELONG TO THIS OR THAT GROUP! Either you restrict it for one, or not at all. In the end, corporations are groups of individuals. You cannot restrict the legal construct of a corporation without restricting the individual. Berating corporations is a method of attacking a group of individuals without having to confront them directly, and is a method of class warfare.
Brian, the word corporate also applies to 501 (3) c's etc. the corporations formed by groups such as TPN Tea Party Express and all the others. It's their speech, our speech that is being infringed.

The Supreme Court case specifically involved a non-profit corporation formed for the purpose of political speech.
Please, corporation is not a dirty word.
This bill will give much weight to large PAC's and slant the message by inhibiting donations to smaller PAC's. The effect is it will give a bigger voice to unions and large PAC's like NRA and AARP. It will not create a level playing field in terms of meesage. Call.. call.. call.. God save us all from the machine that wants to silence us all.
Kat
I called several Senators and when I got one who said they were in favor of the bill, I ask if they were aware the people at home did NOT want the bill passed? I got no comment. I really do not think they care that much. I am from Indiana and Evan Bayh .was a cosponsor of the bill and he would probably vote in favor of the bill. I ask him to vote no and for once do something the people at home wanted, not what the party wanted. All of them seemed surprised when they found out I knew about the Disclose act and what it was. I would say, most of them need replaced. One would be Sen. Graham of NC! I think He is for sure a progressive..
What is the number of this bill? When I call, I like to state the actual Senate number.
S.3295 has been identified more than once in this thread!
Read it or not,as you choose. It can be used to silence us!
Want to bet your right to speak here, Bella? Even for a while?
To defend the passage of this bill in any way, for any time period, is a license to encroach on free speach.
Why not spend your time making some phone calls to defeat it this bill?
I just called Sen. Susan Collins.. I was told as she is voting No. Sen Blanch Lincolns office told me they are voting tonite.
From the bill:
SEC. 324. COORDINATED COMMUNICATIONS.
`(a) Coordinated Communications Defined- For purposes of this Act, the term `coordinated communication' means--

`(2) any communication that republishes, disseminates, or distributes, in whole or in part, any broadcast or any written, graphic, or other form of campaign material prepared by a candidate, an authorized committee of a candidate, or their agents.

I am reading this to mean that if I mention or reference anything that has come from the campaign in my blog or on this site, I have coordinated communications.

`(b) Covered Communication Defined-

`(1) IN GENERAL- Except as provided in paragraph (4), for purposes of this subsection, the term `covered communication' means, for purposes of the applicable election period described in paragraph (2), a publicly distributed or disseminated communication that refers to a clearly identified candidate for Federal office and is publicly distributed or publicly disseminated during such period.

`(2) APPLICABLE ELECTION PERIOD- For purposes of paragraph (1), the `applicable election period' with respect to a communication means--

`(A) in the case of a communication which refers to a candidate for the office of President or Vice President, the period--

`(i) beginning with the date that is 120 days before the date of the first primary election, preference election, or nominating convention for nomination for the office of President which is held in any State; and

`(ii) ending with the date of the general election for such office; or

`(B) in the case of a communication which refers to a candidate for any other Federal office, the period--

`(i) beginning with the date that is 90 days before the earliest of the primary election, preference election, or nominating convention with respect to the nomination for the office that the candidate is seeking; and

`(ii) ending with the date of the general election for such office.

I am reading this to mean I would be prevented from discussing any race in any public forum
I cannot seem to find in the bill the definition of 'covered organization' Does anyone have a link to that definition?
