John Boehner went to Wall Street last night. A lot of people wanted to hear what he had to say. While Dancing with the Stars seems to rate higher on people’s radar than Boehner’s speech, what he said was important. So were the smoke and mirrors he set up.
Boehner’s proposal is simple. For every dollar the debt ceiling is increased, there must be a dollar cut in spending. Boehner reminds me of J. Wellington Wimpy from the Popeye comics and his famous line, “I will gladly pay you Tuesday for a hamburger today.”
Boehner is either totally and shockingly ignorant or simply selling us some oceanfront property in Arizona.
First, this is not a one for one trade off. Borrowing money costs money. If nothing else, we will have to pay service on that debt so our spending still increases. Second, does anyone really believe Congress can control itself?
Congress has about as much self control with money as Michael Moore does around a box of Krispee Kreme Donuts.
Boehner is giving us the typical Washington bait and switch. He wants us to agree to a debt ceiling increase today in exchange for spending cuts FIVE YEARS OUT.
Obama is being intransigent. Why not? His opposition is John Boehner. Obama has made it obvious he does not want any cuts. Obama wants to spend us into bankruptcy and is well on his way to doing that.
Boehner and the GOP establishment wonder why the Tea Party and conservatives are so opposed to Boehner. It is simple - Boehner has a track record. It is a record of surrender. We conservatives have neither forgotten nor forgiven him for the budget deal. When he came in as Speaker, the GOP promised $100 billion dollars in budget cuts for this year’s budget that Nancy Pelosi never passed because she feared passing the budget would harm Democrats in the fall election. Boehner managed to work out a compromise, which in the end, meant a whopping $352 MILLION in budget cuts. That is 1/3 of one percent of what they promised.
Last night, Boehner said, “we should be talking about cuts of trillions, not billions.” When Boehner’s cuts morphed from billions into millions, my level of confidence in Boehner is not exactly high.
The only alternative is to pressure our congressmen to vote against ANY increase in the debt ceiling. Obama and Geithner will probably make sure America defaults on its debt, even though there is more than enough money to pay the debt service. This is going to be a difficult time, but we are going to have to do something. As we have mentioned here on Tea Party Nation before, the way we are going is not unexplored territory. Europe has already gone down that road. They have already drunk the Kool-Aid. We can ask them how the hope and change worked out for them, but we already know the answer. Some of the European countries are about to tank and the rest of Europe has neither the inclination nor ability to bail them out much longer.
We are at the point in our economic fight that is something like a scene from one of the old Star Trek episodes where Scotty tells Captain Kirk, “if we don’t break away now, we never will.” If we do not stop the borrow and spend addiction that both Republicans and Democrats have enabled, we will never stop it.
If we are going to win this fight, Boehner is going to have to do something that is not in his nature. He is going to have to fight.
Boehner talks a great game, but keeps his white flag of surrender floating in the breeze.
Well, Mr. Boehner, talk is cheap. Haul down that flag and fight!
I think I see what Boehner is trying to do, he wants to bargain with Obama and the democrats to bargain he has set requirements for raising the debt ceiling. He believes that the government will shut down if they don’t raise the debt ceiling. He doesn’t understand that he has them under control and all to say is“there will be no raising the debt ceiling” and they’re finished. Without raising the debt ceiling Congress will be forced to live within their means.
do not raise the debt ceiling
force the Communists to make big cuts in their Socialist programs
let them shut down the government they will get blamed for it
J.B. IS YOUR TYPICAL CAREER POLITICIAN he plays out his own game does not fight for controlling the NATIONAL DEBT he dances around the ISSUE but never solves it. THEREFORE THE NAME WIMP SPEAKER applies well to him. at 5:00 clock washington time straight to the BAR. with nothing done. he needs to go. we need a house speaker with FORTITUDE AND BACKBONE TO PUSH A DEFINITE RESOLVE TO THE NATIONAL DEBT. J.B. AIN'T IT.
Boehner is up for reelection in '12. Why don't those with conservative web sites (such as this one Judson) start campaigning against him NOW. Get the process going, inform people, encourage a campaign to get him OUT of his obviously TOO CUSHY job.
This man obviously feels he's 'safe' in his position and doesn't seriously have to be CONCERNED about next year. He needs to be brought to the PAINFUL realization that he couldn't be further from the truth! HOPEfully the effect would be for him to get shocked into reality, the reality that voters have HAD IT with him and those like-minded.
Granted I couldn't personally effect his loosing next year since I don't live in Ohio. But I could certainly help fund those in his state. If he realized that the same Tea Party 'machine' that so dramatically effected the mid-terms are going after HIM he 'might' realize his position is in SERIOUS and real jeopardy and start behaving correctly.
I'm in Boehner's home district. The problem is not bad publicity against Boehner. He makes plenty of that for himself.
The real problem is the LOW quality of those who run against him. Last year, Boehner's Democrat opponent made Obama look like a fiscal conservative. Boehner beat him 2:1. Plus, the smaller parties had virtually no money compared to Boehner's "bank" of rich north-Cincinnati suburb and corporate donors.
David, I understand about 'the bank'. I'd give nearly ANYTHING to get rid of Dick Durban. But he's got so much money behind him that so far it's been impossible.
All I can suggest is that people such as yourself get aggressive about finding a GOOD opponent to run against Boehner. Those in Ohio who 'may' have thought Boehner would legislate the way he said he would must SURELY know by now he's apparently not serious. Wouldn't they all be ready to CAN him?
That's all I could suggest David, that you and those other good conservatives in the state get actively involved in finding a valid opponent to oppose him in '12 and then campaign for that person!
And GOOD LUCK with that!
