As Rick Santorum tries to coalesce his position as the Anti-Romney candidate, he manages to attempt political suicide.

From the Hill:

Rick Santorum said that “America is suffering from a pandemic of harm from pornography,” and accused the Obama administration’s Justice Department of favoring “pornographers over children,” in a statement on his campaign website.

The former Pennsylvania senator argues that "current federal 'obscenity' laws prohibit distribution of hardcore [obscene] pornography on the Internet, on cable/satellite TV, on hotel/motel TV, in retail shops and through the mail or by common carrier."

“The Obama administration has turned a blind eye to those who wish to preserve our culture from the scourge of pornography and has refused to enforce obscenity laws,” the statement read in part. “While the Obama Department of Justice seems to favor pornographers over children and families, that will change under a Santorum administration.”

What?

Where does this fit on anyone’s agenda?  IS this on anyone’s radar?  Where the hell has Santorum been for the last three years?

Let me give a disclaimer here.  I spent ten years of my career as a prosecutor.  I have handled obscenity cases as a prosecutor and seen some pretty disgusting things.   I have no sympathy for pornographers.

However, Santorum is a first class idiot for bringing this up.

This is not a winning issue for Republicans.  This is not an issue we even need to be dealing with.

People in America are worried about the price of gas, keeping food on their table and a roof over their heads.  People in America are worried about their jobs surviving.  People in America are worried about their country surviving.

Who in the hell in Santorum’s campaign thinks bringing this up is a good idea?

It isn’t.

Let’s ignore the issues such as Santorum being a big government Republican for a moment.   The fact that he would bring up such a losing issue in the middle of the campaign says a lot about him.

Gingrich has his faults, but none this dumb.  Romney, for all of his faults such as being a liberal, is not that dumb.

Does Santorum really want to simply lose?

While it is not fair, the simple fact is if Santorum runs on social issues he will be slaughtered.  He of all people should know what liberals do to conservatives on social issues.

If he continues to make such stupid remarks, the election is not going to be about saving America.  The election is not going to be about the economy.   The election is going to be about the perception that Santorum is the next Torquemada, and the Santorum administration will be the grand inquisition.

We don’t need to go from a big government Democrat imposing a socialist agenda to a big government Republican imposing a social engineering agenda. We need less government interference in our lives, not more.

Santorum should take a lesson from Bill Clinton.

“It’s the economy stupid.”

Come on Judson!  The Obama administration and the rest of the progressives are waging a war on morality.  It's about time a conservative stands for what is morally right.  It's called principle, and it is lacking in our society.

May I recommend a wonderful TV trilogy from 1961 from the Twilight Zone called, "The Shelter". It's about a suburban party interrupted by a bulletin warning of an impending nuclear attack.

As the neighbors are scrambling to prepare last minute, they turn against one of their friends and his family that installed a bomb shelter to go to.

While the chaos is ensuing, they become more and more desperate, their morality turns towards thoughts of murder. I won't give away the ending.

My point being, what is the purpose of talking about these issues touched upon here, when America is burning, more and more people are going hungry, joblessness on the rise, when jihadist cells are preparing to take us down with the blessings of this president and all we can talk about is prostitution, and contraception etc.

Do you see how incongruous this is becoming? Please rent this DVD to watch to really understand human behavior, then you will put life in perspective. Enough of this craziness, please!!!!

The war on morality, contraceptives and other social issues was deliberately created to draw attention from the real issues in this election - the economy, jobs, gas prices, foreclosures, higher food prices etc.  Although morality and other social issues are important in our lives, Santorum should not fall into the trap laid out by the Leftists.  He should be pounding them about the issues that will decide this election.  Right now the dems are concentrating their ads on accusing the Republicans of being anti-woman.  Of course we know this a ridiculous argument, but there will always be some who will fall for the lies...because they want to be misled.  Our candidates should not waste any time trying to defend that which is not true; or talking about issues that, as someone else has already mentioned, are better left to the new president.  It is then he will have the bully pulpit and the DOJ to push a worthy and public-supported agenda.

First it is abortions(all including to save the mothers life, incest, and rape), then it is birth control pills, sex education (which has been around since I was in school, and I am 53, and condoms, now it is internet porn. Mom and Dad have a responsibility to educate their children on these things, in all these areas. In my day teenage boys hid Playboy and Hustler (taken from Dad or Uncle Fred) and hid them under their mattresses or in their footlockers, snuck them to school, and traded them. Now a days it is on the net, so lock your kids computers out with a password they can't guess, then forget the password yourself. Problem solved. But I do have to say this, the GOVERNMENT does not belong in my bedroom, period! And is NOT welcome there! I am personally glad the pill was available when I was young, and darn glad that condoms were available. I didn't want children until later in life, and the pill and condoms made that possible. I was fortunate to come from a medically educated family, so sex ed was no big news to me, but there were girls there who thought you could get pregnant from swallowing watermelon seeds, no kidding. It is a necessity. Not in elementary school, but certainly at puberty, and where I live there is a letter sent home to excuse your child if you do not want them to participate.

I get the distinct impression from listening to Rick, that every form of birth control except abstinance would be outlawed or restricted, mothers would die from etopic pregnancies gone bad, and more children of rape would be born to 12 year old girls. No they are not the majority of the abortions performed, but they are part of them. I do not approve of abortion on demand, I believe these women need an education on what they are wanting to do. But on the other hand, as I cannot afford to pay to adopt their babies, pay their medical bills, and support them during their pregnancies, I really have no right to tell them what they can or cannot do.

Then, no, you aren't "listening to Rick", because he has said nothing remotely of the kind.

As far as "government not belonging in your bedroom" - no one is saying that either.  How about sex ed for kindergardeners (advocated in the Clinton years - now THAT was some GREAT sex ed with the massive increase in sex related problems all the way down to elementary school!)?  Or free condoms for elementary school or middle school (I mean, hey, they're going to do it anyway right - why ACTUALLY BE A PARENT and make rules and enforce them).  Or how about 13 year old girls being "counseled" to seek abortions without parental consent.  All good things right?   Let's just end ALL morality, laws, government...

Obviously you did not read my post. As I said nothing about counselling 13 year old girls to get abortions, nor handing out free condoms, nor Clinton. Nor did I support elementary sex ed. So blow your top at someone else, perhaps someone who said what you THINK I said. Rick believes in regulating, and I listen to him quite intently, and this is an area he wants to regulate. I am actually a REAL parent, who educates her children, from hand, fingers, nose and toes, to reading and math, to sex ed, algebra, and venereal disease. I DO my job, and do it well. I have NO out of wedlock grandchildren, and only one of my kids has been separated/divorced, and with one of the only justifications there are, adultery/abuse/non-support. So please feel free to cast some more aspirations on my parenting, moral standards, or anything else you THINK I am. You will be dead wrong.

Has Rick now outed himself as the least-in-touch with issues relevant to this election cycle?  That is a RESOUNDING YES.

The left has ramned their far left "no morals" agenda down our throats for years.  Santorum is right that if our moral foundation is not rebuilt, our economic building will collapse.  I agree he needs to be focused on economic issues and attack O on them; but nothing wrong with addressing some of the moral decline, which errodes the family. the errosian of the family is one of the biggest travesties perpetrated by the left.

LOL - Judson...where does Gingrich's colonization of the moon fit in the big picture of pressing issues?

Santorum is just elaborating on talking points...and there are a lot of them.

I believe we can leave Bill Clinton off the list of lesson givers too.

S/F

The out-of-work folks at Cape Canaveral where the remarks were delivered seemed rather in favor of the idea of getting back into space. The only thing "crazier" was JFK in 1960 suggesting we ought to be looking at putting a man on the moon.

Well, I don't know, it might have been a little crazier to shut down our own space program and ship our technology to the Middle East. Or maybe that wasn't crazy, just malevolent.

Kristen - part of the problem is people listen to too much news, twitter and do facebook; they're totally out of tough and believe most of what they see and hear. Newt Gingrich has claim to one of the best speakerships in our Nations' history. People like O'Reilly, Rowe, Boehner and many of the old Washington establishment don't want Newt because they will have to quit their elite day club and work for a living for I might add "We the people."

Santorum is bringing up another issue that the media doesn't like to talk about. There's too much porno and it's in plain view for everyone to see. This industry use to be out of site or located in a seedy part of town. Now it's all over the internet, on main street, and on interstate interchanges all over the country. Like the birth control pill, porno has serious problems, but doesn't have so many people in favor of it.
