In the aftermath of the Arizona shootings, we expected lunacy from the left. We expected more sense from the GOP. Peter King (R-NY), who is best described as not being the sharpest knife in the drawer, is going to introduce a bill that prohibits the carrying of firearms within 1,000 feet of a member of congress.
Perhaps he can pass a new law while he is at it requiring us all to bow down to Members of Congress when we come within 1,000 feet of them too.
This bit of lunacy is in response to the shooting of Congressman Gabrielle Giffords, so perhaps we should start with the most important and most obvious question.
If this law had been in effect last Saturday, would it have stopped the shooting?
No, of course not.
If you are going to introduce a law in response to something that has happened, perhaps someone might take a look at the law and ask the obvious question, will this stop a future occurrence of such an act?
Jared Loughner is nuts. He is probably legally insane. Would such a law have stopped him? No. Just to make the point, and remind those who are incapable of intelligent thought, like Congressman King, Arizona has had a murder statute on the books since it became a territory. That did not deter Loughner. The Federal Government has had a law against murdering Congressmen for over two hundred years. That did not stop Loughner.
When you have someone as far in left field as Loughner is, no law is going to stop him. When you have someone who is obsessed with the idea of killing someone, a law is not going to stop them. If laws stopped crimes, there would be no murders, robberies or rapes.
Laws deter law-abiding people. People like Loughner are by definition incapable of obeying the law. Congressman King, your moronic law would not have helped anyone.
In law school, law students are often told that bad cases make bad law. Someone needs to remind Congressman King, bad laws cause all kinds of unintended problems.
In the Weekly Standard, King was interviewed about his new law. John McCormack asked a very good question. He said, what about what happened when the shots were fired? A man with a gun ran to the aid of the people. Would he be guilty under this new law?
King had no idea, “because the law has not been written.”
Congressman King, the only people who will be prosecuted under this statute are law-abiding citizens.
Congressman King also said he was open to other gun control laws. I am open to seeing the people of New York replace this guy in the next election.

There are already over 200 gun laws on the books. Why don't you, David, understand that murderers & criminals do not care about any kind of laws and do not abide by them. It is already illegal to murder people! More laws only stifle the law abiding citizens. Get a clue!

So, we should outlaw cars!
How many people does cancer kill every year?
Nancy Pelosi, using her powerful Congress would have "outlawed" cancer, if she had still been in power.
Her way of solving the Overweight Problem in Children would be to order that the Law of Gravity's formula should be reduced by 20 percent. That would instantly reduce the overweight children's weight by 20 percent.
Watch your local TV news, especially MSNBC. They have a whole bunch of great ideas to solve all the world's problems.
