Not letting the debt ceiling crisis go to waste!
Rahm Emanuel’s famous quote is, “never let a crisis go to waste.” The United States is about to hit its debt ceiling and that is a perfect crisis, not to waste.
Early next year, the United States will hit the limit it can borrow. If the US Government is not allowed to raise the debt, there will be consequences. The dollar’s value could drop or there could be a partial government shutdown. There is a crisis, no doubt.
Every time we bump up to the debt ceiling, we are told it will be the end of the world, as we know it, if we do not raise the ceiling. Now, we have a Republican majority in the house and they will have to deal with this issue.
To be fair to the incoming House GOP leadership, this crisis was not totally of their making and they need a chance to start correcting things. Many new congressmen ran on not raising the debt ceiling.
The new freshmen Republicans need to hold the line on this issue. It is possible that we may need to raise the debt ceiling one more time, but before any Republican votes for raising the debt ceiling, there must be a specific plan in place to reduce spending so that this is the last time we have to raise the ceiling.
Remember the old Snoopy cartoons? Lucy would hold out the football for Charlie Brown to kick and every time, he would run up to her and she would pull the football out of the way. Charlie Brown would say something to her and she would promise, next time I won’t pull the football out of the way. He would run up and she would do it again.
Republicans are like Charlie Brown. They agree to what the liberals want, in exchange the liberals promise they will do something the Republicans want later. Unfortunately, later never comes.
John Boehner has already signaled his weakness on this issue. Boehner has said he will not shut the government down. He was in Congress in 1995 when Gingrich led the Republicans in shutting down the government. Then Bill Clinton was president. He was a media savvy president and the liberal monopoly on news still existed. Boehner remembers the pounding they took and I am sure he has no stomach for that fight. Unfortunately, he forgets there is now a conservative media. There is a Tea Party movement ready to rally to his support.
We are also there to be his worst nightmare.
If Congress does not do something to cut spending, then fine, do not raise the debt ceiling and let the government partially shut down.
Mark Twain once said no man’s life, liberty or property is safe when congress is in session. Perhaps he could have added to that, while the government is functioning as well.
