Not letting the debt ceiling crisis go to waste!

Rahm Emanuel’s famous quote is, “never let a crisis go to waste.”   The United States is about to hit its debt ceiling and that is a perfect crisis, not to waste.

Early next year, the United States will hit the limit it can borrow.   If the US Government is not allowed to raise the debt, there will be consequences.  The dollar’s value could drop or there could be a partial government shutdown.   There is a crisis, no doubt.

Every time we bump up to the debt ceiling, we are told it will be the end of the world, as we know it, if we do not raise the ceiling.  Now, we have a Republican majority in the house and they will have to deal with this issue.

To be fair to the incoming House GOP leadership, this crisis was not totally of their making and they need a chance to start correcting things.   Many new congressmen ran on not raising the debt ceiling.

The new freshmen Republicans need to hold the line on this issue.  It is possible that we may need to raise the debt ceiling one more time, but before any Republican votes for raising the debt ceiling, there must be a specific plan in place to reduce spending so that this is the last time we have to raise the ceiling.

Remember the old Snoopy cartoons?  Lucy would hold out the football for Charlie Brown to kick and every time, he would run up to her and she would pull the football out of the way.   Charlie Brown would say something to her and she would promise, next time I won’t pull the football out of the way.  He would run up and she would do it again.

Republicans are like Charlie Brown.  They agree to what the liberals want, in exchange the liberals promise they will do something the Republicans want later.  Unfortunately, later never comes.

John Boehner has already signaled his weakness on this issue.  Boehner has said he will not shut the government down.  He was in Congress in 1995 when Gingrich led the Republicans in shutting down the government.   Then Bill Clinton was president.  He was a media savvy president and the liberal monopoly on news still existed.  Boehner remembers the pounding they took and I am sure he has no stomach for that fight.  Unfortunately, he forgets there is now a conservative media.  There is a Tea Party movement ready to rally to his support.

We are also there to be his worst nightmare.

If Congress does not do something to cut spending, then fine, do not raise the debt ceiling and let the government partially shut down.

Mark Twain once said no man’s life, liberty or property is safe when congress is in session.  Perhaps he could have added to that, while the government is functioning as well.

Shut it down. The less they do, the better off WE are.
The most useful action the Tea Party leadership could do is to publicize, among Tea Party members, the proposals being made by Rep. Paul Ryan, who will be chairman of the House Budget Committee. He has been in the action for years. He understands the fiscal crisis and he knows what we have to do to correct it. The best thing the Tea Party could do is to give him the support he needs and draw more people to an understanding of what the legislative priorities should be. The Tea Party should back the people who already know what has to be done.
His approaches to reforming the budget, Rep Ryan have been slapped down 3 times so far. The latest plan had the US losing $4 trillion in revenue over ten years ... not enough budget cuts to cover the shortfall. He seems to want to slowly convert us to a "consumption tax" (VAT and/or Fair Tax-Sales Tax) base. The conversion seems complicated and drawn out... a lot of his proposals taking until 2021 to go into place. I don't see where his proposals address the current $14Trillion national debt, the interest that is making it grow, or how we can grow the economy to off-set that debt growth.
Even if he is as good as you say, he needs a LOT of help with this mess. Who can be sent in to help Rep Ryan fix America's government budget?
Oh this one's easy, shut it down except for defense. Shut down the 85% of government that shouldn't even exist according to our Constitution. Boehner better grow some stones, the TEA party will hand him his a$$ on silver platter if he screws this up.
What we really need is a CONSTITUTIONAL MONEY SYSTEM. Let's get back to GOLD and SILVER coins! Next let's abolish the Fed and have the Congress create paper money BACKED UP WITH GOLD AND SILVER COINS! Congress really has no choice but to do this.
This would be good training for the government workers. It will teach them union people how to work non union on main street. and for the first time filing for unemployment like the rest of us.
