Today is a summer day in June.   Millions of Americans, who still have jobs, will be going to work.  Thanks to the Great Obama Depression, millions more will be looking for work.  Some Americans will be taking vacations, though there are not as many of those as there were a few years ago.

For some Americans, today is a special day.

What is so special about today and what does it mean for us?

Today is one of the more obscure national holidays that we have in America.  Banks and government offices are not closed, though perhaps they should be and we should ditch one of the other holidays in favor if this day.

Today is Flag Day.

On June 14, 1777, the Continental Congress adopted the Stars and Stripes as our flag.

Our flag is as close to a holy relic as you will find in our society.   Real Americans revere our flag.  It has stood as not only our national symbol for 235 years but it stands for something else.  As Lee Greenwood sang in his iconic song God Bless The USA (I’m proud to be an American.), “That flag still stands for freedom and you can’t take that away.”

The flag that flew at Ft. McHenry that inspired Francis Scott Key’s Star Spangled Banner is lovingly preserved at the Smithsonian.

This flag has flown from the darkest days of the War of Independence to the final surrender at Yorktown.  It flew in Philadelphia as the Delegates to the Constitutional Convention gave us the Republic that Mr. Franklin warned us would only be ours if we can keep it.

That flag flew at the Hornet’s Nest at Shiloh.  It flew at Gettysburg and Chickamauga.  It flew above the Courthouse at Appomattox as Americans laid down their arms and no longer fought each other.

That flag flew above the stricken USS Arizona at Pearl Harbor and at Wake Island and Corregidor during the darkest days of World War II.  It led the way as our fathers and grandfathers liberated millions.   For many who were in America in 1945, the iconic image of the flag being raised at Iwo Jima finally convinced millions that the war would end in victory.

The flag has united America through all of the years.  On 9/11, the most enduring image is of the firemen raising the American flag above the rubble of the World Trade Center, announcing to the world America would never surrender.

That flag also does one solemn job as well, covering the caskets of fallen American heroes.

Today that flag remains the symbol of freedom and liberty around the world.

Americans revere the flag.  Liberals do not.  Liberals do not understand our love of the flag.  Michelle Obama was mystified at the 9/11 ten year memorial ceremony, when the flag was brought in with great pomp and honor, she turned to Barack Obama and mouthed the words, “All of this for a flag?”

Liberals like her do not get it.  Liberals think the flag should be burned.  Liberals do not like liberty or freedom.  Perhaps that is why they hold the flag in such contempt.

Today is the day America honors the symbol of our nation.

American flags are ubiquitous.  We display them proudly.  They are flown at homes, businesses, government buildings and churches.   Sometimes we display them so much they become background.  Many times that flag will be flying and we will simply not notice it.

Today, notice it.

Today is the day we remember and honor the flag.  As you go by businesses and government buildings that fly the flag, take a moment.  Look up at that beautiful red, white and blue gently flying in the breeze.  Take a moment to remember what it stands for and give thanks.

And perhaps you should take a moment to remember the line from one of the greatest songs about America ever written.

“That flag still stands for freedom and they can’t take that away.”

I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America and to the republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.

Steve, as I read the blog article, especially the part where Michelle mouthed her words to Barack, your phrase from OUR Pledge sprang to my thoughts ... AND to the republic FOR which it stands. Our Flag and Pledge have never stood for, nor been to ... the federal government! They are to the REPUBLIC ... One Nation under God and the Rule of valid Law.

That's what the Obama's don't "get" or have any regard for.

Thanks.

My 3ft. X 5ft Valley Forge flag is flying proudly this sunny morning, as it does almost every day....

It flies from my front porch, over the stone walk just before the stairs. Before entering the front of my log home, all must pass under this flag.

You don't suppose that there is some psychology in this particular placement, do you?

No psychology at all, not at all. lol

LOL go Vern!! Now thats as American as you get!! Thank you for that image..I needed that. It's Beautiful, now all you need is a blad Eagle. :)

Beautiful blog Judson, one of your best ever.

DITTO!

Since I was a kid my parents would hang the flags starting with the first one ever made, ending with the one we have today. We would talk about what it took to get the flag we have now. The history and who made the first one and why and the meaning. Flag day was important to my Family. Any time there was a big moment in history with the USA and her transformation...Mom and Dad would sit us down and talk about it, they never wanted us to forget the suffering, the pain, the love and joy that our Founders and so many others went through to make this nation, the best nation out there. So it pains me too see day's like this go ignored by so many. This is the first time that my husband is travling on flag day...so he called me to say the pledge with me. This is a tradition that he and I started after we got married. :) We have never missed one. Our History is being forgotten by so many these day's, and I feel that it is the fault of the liberal teachers, they change history all the time and people are confused on the facts, due to that confusion they turn away from learning about it and they chose to forget it all. It saddens me to the core. I do what I can to help people remember. What the Founders and so many others after them have done to make the USA the USA that so many love is something that should fill your heart with pride. Instead all we hear about are the mistakes that we made...and they ignore how we fixed those mistakes. Like slavery, that happened, we saw what it was doing and how wrong it was and we changed that. Not every white man owned a slave, but they way they teach it,we all did and still do. They for go the fact that in Mass alone there were Black men that were elected into office, they forget that there were many free black men in this nation and that most of them had black slaves as well. Don't you think it would be nice for the blacks to know that there were some pretty powerful free blacks here in the USA? What do the liberals care? It's just wrong! Today I fly as many flags as I can...including the Gadson flag, it was one of the first..remember? :) God Bless America and let's let the flag fly with pride. Now I am off for the second tradtion....buy a new American flag to wave....every year! :)

"o'er the land of the free and the home of the brave"

Let's do all we can to keep it that way!

If you ever have a chance to go to Ft. McHenry (just outside Baltimore), please do so--it's so inspiring (might even make you cry).

Are students even allowed to do this anymore???
