Mitt Romney and Newt Gingrich?  Could we call them the odd couple?  Could they be the match that the Republicans need?

While Newt Gingrich continues his now hopeless quest to become the Republican Nominee, and Mitt Romney is now considering his options for a running mate, perhaps there is one option neither of them has considered.

What is it?

Does anyone remember 1980?  Ronald Reagan had won the Republican nomination.  There were still some floor fights going on, as Reagan had to decide who his running mate would be.

Then an idea was floated up.  To “help” Reagan, former President Gerald Ford would be the Vice Presidential nominee and “co-President.”

That idea was never going to work for any number of reasons, not the least of which is how does everyone deal with a former President who is now the Vice President?

But the idea was not necessarily a bad one and it is now one Mitt Romney should resurrect.

First, Newt Gingrich brings an unbelievable tenacity to the plate.   Gingrich continues to fight on, even though he knows his cause is lost.  When the Navy puts recruits through what is called BUDS, which is the basic underwater demolition school or Navy Seals basic training, they throw everything they can at the Seal candidates.  It is not to find the most physically fit guys for the program.  Instead, they want the guys who will not quit.

That is Gingrich.  He will not quit.

He has been through three or possibly four spots in the campaign where he could have bailed and no one would have argued about it.  Tim Pawlenty got out when he hit the first bump in the road.

Gingrich is the idea man that Romney is not.  Romney is a product of the Harvard Business School.  His idea of fixing problems is solving for x.  Life is not an algebra problem or even a business school problem.  You need creativity and outside of the box thinking.  Those are not Romney’s strong points.

They are Newt’s.

Before the race officially ran down, what was Obama attacking?  It was not Romney’s plans.  It was not Santorum’s plans.  It was third place Newt Gingrich’s ideas for $2.50 a gallon gas.

Newt makes a great attack dog, which is a role traditional for a Vice Presidential candidate.  This is what Newt does so well.  He owns the media.   When he fights the media, the media loses.  He is the Chuck Norris of political media.

Finally, Newt is the conservative that Romney needs.  Jonah Goldberg on National Review Online claimed Romney was a “late convert to conservatism” and has trouble speaking the language.

No, he isn’t a late convert to conservatism.  He is not a conservative.  He cannot speak the language because he does not know the language.

Newt knows it because he is a conservative.

Can you imagine Newt as the nominee?  While a debate between Newt and Obama would have been fun, can you imagine the debate between Newt and Biden?  They would have to have a mercy rule in place to save Biden from running, screaming into the night.

Romney is an intelligent guy.  There is no question about it.  There is also no question he has a lot of shortcomings too.   So does Newt.  So does everyone.

Romney has been running for President for seven years now.  If his goal is simply more than residing at the White House for four years, he needs someone to fill in his weaknesses and actually help him as a co-President.

Romney has to choose someone.   Romney’s instinct will be to make a safe choice.  He can choose someone like Mitch Daniels or Rob Portman and watch the conservative movement be as unenthused about him as we were about John McCain.  He can choose a liberal running mate and watch us walk.  Or he can go outside the box.  He can choose someone who has the vision to fundamentally transform this nation.

Last week, I was at Herman Cain’s Revolution on the Hill.  Pundit Dick Morris said that twenty years from now, Republicans would be having “Lincoln-Reagan-Romney” dinners.   Morris predicted that Romney would be a great President.   Romney is a manager and he thinks he can manage America into greatness.  If he wants to be a great President, he needs someone who can help him with the great ideas and vision that will move America back to the greatness we knew in the days of Reagan.

Newt is the guy who can do this.

UPDATE...JUST NEW!!! NEWT AD - I’M GEORGE SOROS AND I APPROVE THIS MESSAGE! I love it!
http://gretawire.foxnewsinsider.com/video/just-in-a-new-gingrich-ad...

George Soros is a severly mentally handicapped old man.

Before I add any other comment, let me first make clear I Am Still Donating to NEWT and praying that voters will finally unite behind NEWT the rest of the way to deny Romney the nomination.

That said, NEWT would be awesome in many roles. Any president would be extremely well served with NEWT as their Veep or in their cabinet. As a "Cheney-style" Veep given meaningful goals to achieve in dramatically downsizing the federal govt and bureaucracy, and in dealing with unconstitutional legislation, regulations, agencies, and judicial tyranny, NEWT would be awesome.

Also, NEWT as the next head of the RNC could root out so called moderates, RINO's and progressives, replacing them with conservatives in State after State after State and at the National RNC.

However, UNTIL [for emphasis ... hehe] someone secures 1144 delegates ... NEWT 2012!!!

I have friends that profess Mormon faith, to me they are great people, even if this was untrue, I hope so, this sound more like islam to me, the fact is that this is a weapon that the media will use against Mitt, and that is something that will backfire everyone. It's a reason of why Americans was so against his faith on 08, and most people decide not to follow him, one has to wonder what has change since them. I said many times, to beat Obama, we must beat the media first. The media destroy him once in 08 will have no problems to destroy him again. What is your thought about it.

Mitt needs Newt.

Newt & Mitt (Conservative & Liberal) would be a match NOT made in Heaven!

You might as well match up Limbaugh & Obama!

Mitt will choose another Right Coast Liberal GOPer!

If it was a fact that Romney was going to be the Republican candidate and I was an Obama supporter .......

An effective device would be to attend a mostly conservative website and say that there was no difference between Romney and Obama.  It wouldn't hurt Obama a bit.  Potential Romney voters would stay home.  And, Obama voters who had been thinking of changing for the better man would see no reason to change.

Remember folks.  Obama got where he is by lies.  He will continue to pursue the upcoming election with lies.  And, he will exploit both accidental and deliberate detractors.  They both have the same effect.

Romney may not be your first choice as a candidate but he is not Obama.  And, he is our candidate.  If you can look beyond the detractors, you will see there is a vast difference.  God bless us all.  -  p

Condeeleza Rice is the one candidate that the media and  the obama hit-team will be afraid to attack. She has top qualifications and the intellectual fortitude to make an excellent VP.

While I see Newt as a possible VP candidate but I don't believe that is going to happen. I see Santorum being Romney's pick as he's better looking than Newt and is more apt to attract more votes in particular the youth vote. Let us also remember that Santorum suddenly dropped out of the race and had more delegates than Newt did. Logic would  indicate that Santorum may bring more votes to the Romney campaign. Maybe a deal was made to clear the path for Romney. .

Don't misunderstand me, I would prefer to see Newt as the VP pick, but in the game of partisan politics things are done for only one reason-VOTES! My money is on Santorum being Romneys pick but again in the world of politics strange things can happen.

While the sentiment of true conservatives may not be with Romney, something must be done to defeat the radical leftist that now sits in the White House. If Obama is re-elected, you will not recognize this country in another four years. The USA will surrender its sovereignty to the UN, the constitution will be re-written and we will be driven to the socialist dependency cesspool of Europe where government reigns supreme. There is no Bill of Rights in Europe and this is what Obama wants for us.

I agree, Judson.  I voted for Newt in Florida and have thought all along that if Romney won, Newt was the best guy to be his running mate.  That was one of many reasons Romney's negative campaign on Newt pissed me off so much.  I felt like he was beating his teammate with a bat of BS.

Romney needs a real conservative to win.  Portman or Daniels will not cut it.  If he doesn't choose Newt, he needs a Rubio or Allen West or, what do you think about Condi Rice?  I really do not know much about her, or if she would even consider that position.

Tony,

My stupid computer is video-impaired but I think the remarks probably tell the story and you're right - it's slaughter time vis-a-vis the election: (thanks for the post)

Debating in Tampa, Florida in late-January, while falsely characterizing Newt Gingrich's income from his government consulting work, Mitt Romney denied that Bain did "any work with the government like Medicaid and Medicare". Now we learn that Bain, under Romney's "supervision", purchased and ran the Damon Corporation, who pled guilty to Federal conspiracy charges as a result of tens of millions of dollars in systemic Medicare fraud committed under Romney's and Bain's control. Damon was fined over $119-million which was, at the time, the largest criminal healthcare fine in Massachusetts history and Mr. Romney's participation was characterized in 1996 by Corporate Crime Reporter thusly: "As manager and board member of Damon Corp, Mitt Romney sits at the center of one of the top 15 corporate crimes of the 1990's." Watch the substantiated mini-documentary, BLOOD MONEY: MITT ROMNEY'S MEDICARE SCANDAL, to learn the truth about Mitt Romney.

Carol:

Looks like we are getting ready to elect another President that will "hide everything about his past, inspite of a wealth of indicting evidence of being a thief" .
