I went over on HuffingtonPost to to see the reaction to last night's Tea Party Convention.

Many of our opponents are saying "It is all noise, no substance".

I decided to join their conversations for the first time ever, and after some explanation, some of the people dogging the movement realized that they are actually Tea Partiers too!

The problem is they are looping us in with Republicans. This is mostly due to FoxNews giving us the only positive coverage and Palin being the key note speaker.

We are conservative but I would hardly call this a Republican movement.

After I let them know that most of us don't like any of the current Republicans or Democrats in control, it seemed to hit a chord.

I believe the people we choose to be our next leaders should have the following as the pillars of their platform for 2010.

  • Reign in the debt
  • Push Fair Tax (HR 25, S 296) fairtax.org
  • Audit the Federal Reserve
  • Make congressional salaries equivalent to the average of their constituents with a cap of the current salaray
I believe America, liberal and conservative, can get behind something like that.  Let's walk the walk!

What does everyone else think?

And as you reply, remember that CNN/MSNBC are already saying we are fractured.   Let's have some civil conversation.

If you do disagree, it is quite possible I am missing something and I am open to suggestions.

I look forward to a healthy discussion!

Chad you are obviously a patriot who loves this country. I will share some of my thoughts with you. if i where the RNC chairman..I would do the following. I would announce that the Republican party has been reborn at the will of the people. I would suggest that the party has very much like an alcoholic. taken the first step in admitting it is an alcoholic. I would simplify and i do mean simplify the following principles as the new bedrock foundation.

1 the constitution is law. it is not a living document to be bent and abused by the power hungry politician

2 government is the problem, not the solution. it must be smaller and stay out of the lives of the citizens.

3 when cutting government. CUT TAXES. ALL TAXES. Get out of the way of the people.

4 the New republican party will serve the people as the constitution states. and only as allowed by the constitution. no favors for voting blocks of people. all are american citizens. no special programs for some. no special programs period.

5 a call to create actual real total transparency for the people to observe and report. corruption of ALL has been acknowledged. and here forward it is to be measured against the constitution.

I would also suggest that our government in washington take a pay cut. I feel that in a fashion simillar to jury duty. every week two citizens from each state should be sent to observe spending and goings on in order to report their findings back to their home state. The pay cut would very easily cover this. We could name these two people from each sate " spending and Corruption" monitors. I suggest this since the mainstream media has basically become untrustworthy and very political.
I really like your ideas. Let's talk about #3.

We all know that there has to be some tax to fund our military etc. The current tax system is broken. Let's throw that out the window and try something that can solve our issues and be fair.

What do you think of the Fair Tax?

I think the greatest benefit is that it taxes everyone equally! Drug Dealers and illegal immigrants can no longer avoid taxes!
I think you are correct that a flat or fair tax is the most workable solution. The higher income people will contribute a higher percentage of the tax collected by purchasing higher end goods,as long as your thinking along the lines of using this as a national sales tax,but if you are talking a flat tax on earned income, there will have to be a way to impose the tax minus all the loopholes to hide income or we will still be in the same situation.A national sales tax is the only way I can see everyone sharing the same percentage of the burden, and you are correct in that the only true provision that allows for the taxing of the nation is for national defense and I would add in this day and age funding true border security.Almost every other provision should be left up to the states.
No Fair Tax is not a flat tax.

I completely agree with the border security. But you can believe that the Fair Tax will take a big bite out of the illegal immigration as they won't be able to avoid taxes anymore.
One of the platforms that needs to be discussed and implemented is term limits on all political offices,
That's another great idea. What do you suggest as terms? Can someone run again after an extended break?
Hi Angela: Well, one of the theories of term limits is that it will limit Congresional members from being able to form strong ties with lobbyists. The Heritage Foundation lists some pros and cons on their web site. Unfortunately, you are right in so far as their pensions and insurance are concerned. These costs are passed on to the tax payer. This would really be tough to address. They are treated as royalty. There are lots of "welfare for the rich programs". Even Microsoft get subsidies. That is why I want to focus on government programs.
I have thrown this out before and will do so again here. A 14 year limit for any combination of offices. For each year served, you must stay out of any government involvment for the same number of years. This should be enforced as an amendment, not a statute. There would be no clearing of the slate, all time served would be cumulative.
Dear Chad:

I agree with several of your points. Did you know that Senator Jim DeMint has proposed a bill implementing "Term Limits". Historically this has been favored by the American Public since 1995. In most cases, the laws have been overturned by the State Supreme Court s in several states mostly related to "qualifications" in the Constitution. I have been researching and found quite a bit of information by the Heritage Foundation.

Secondly, Senator Coburn has a bill in Congress asking the CBO be required to list all government programs. They have no way of knowing how many there are right now. His staff has identified approximately 130 duplicate programs, but he wants to do more. I do not know if this bill will even be considered, but it is a great way to start shrinking the government.

I have written both of these Congress men to see what help they need in implementing these bills. No response yet.

I especially like your idea regarding government payroll, but am unsure how it could be implemented.

Do you know if there are any groups in the Tea Party Nation that are working to hone in on these ideas? Would like to hear from anyone that does.

Thanks.
Thank you for those references. I will look them up.

I actually wrote my Congressman, Eric Cantor (Republican Whip), about Fair Tax and he responded via mail within a few days.

He is part of the Ways and Means, so he could really do something about it. Unfortunately, he only said he would consider Fair Tax if the legislation came before him in the house.

We need someone to really push it and the other things that will get us going in the right direction.
I am so disappointed......... While checking to see who voted for the new budget ceiling, I found that Dr. Coburn's bill to rescind 120 billion in Federal spending by consolidation of duplicate government programs was defeated Jan 26th. Republicans voting against this were Lugar-IN, Snowe-Maine, Cochran -Ms and Collins Maine. It was defeated by 60 votes in total.
I think the tea party should produce their priority target list, and you have identified the first four names! Time to start finding and supporting primary challengers, lets make them defend and fight for their current positions TWICE!
What a show of power and determination if we could get these people off of the general ballot entirely!
