It has begun. And I have to ask, what the hell are people thinking?
What has begun? It is the drumbeat that it is not the end of the world if Romney loses the general election to Obama.
The latest to come out with that is Matt Lewis with the Daily Caller.
Don’t buy the doom and gloom pronouncements from conservatives telling you, “this is the most important election in history.” A loss for Mitt Romney would not necessarily spell long lasting disaster for Republicans, nor would it be the death-knell to conservatism. In fact, it’s possible a 2012 loss could lay the groundwork for a stronger Republican party and conservative movement.
Elections are almost always seen as urgent and morally imperative. But sometimes major victories can only come in the aftermath of what appear to be devastating defeats. John Kerry‘s loss in 2004 laid the groundwork for a Democratic takeover in 2006 and 2008, and Jimmy Carter‘s defeat of Gerald Ford in 1976 paved the way for the Ronald Reagan in 1980. In other words, it is a mistake to assume losing a presidential election is a permanent defeat.
“This should be the most important election since 1980, but so far it is not,” says Reagan biographer Craig Shirley. “Scottish historian Thomas Carlyle postulated the ‘great man’ theory of history, and indeed this was true with Washington, Jackson, Lincoln, TR, FDR and Reagan. But history has not summoned forth great men in 2012 and in fact our history today is small.”
This is not to say Republicans should concede the election, but conservatives should keep November in proper perspective.
For one thing, controlling Congress can sometimes matter as much as winning the White House. It is in Congress that spending can be curtailed, the executive branch can be reined in, and other conservative principles can be championed. And regarding the upper chamber, George Will was not absurd in advising the GOP to focus on the senate.
If Romney cannot win, why the hell is the GOP going to nominate him?
We don’t need someone who will simply show up and lose with style. We need a fighter and a winner.
We need a great man of history who has the greatness and the vision to change history. Romney is many things but he is not the great man of history that we need at this crucial time.
He might do with a conservative Congress, but he has to win. If the GOP is already writing him off, what the hell are we supposed to do?
Mitt Romney is totally tone deaf when it comes to politics. Politico’s Ginger Gibson asked him about his position on the Huma Abedin controversy and the Chick-Fil-A controversy.
Romney ducked both of them. The Huma Abedin matter I’m not shocked he ducked. Although he could show some political courage by wading into it, there is little upside for him.
But the Chick-fil-A matter is another matter. On Wednesday, hundreds of thousands of people, if not more than a million around the nation turned out to support the right of this company and its employee to have freedom of speech.
This is one he should jump on.
While massive numbers of people were out to support Chick-Fil-A, literally only a handful of activists showed up for today’s anti Chick-Fil-A protests.
This one should be the mother of all no brainers for Romney to jump in with Chick-Fil-A. Instead we see no courage nor do we see any indication Romney has a clue.
Meanwhile, conservative bloggers like Matt Lewis are already getting us ready for a Romney defeat this fall.
If the Republicans are not using their party, could We the People borrow it for a few months?

Permalink Reply by JOHN DELASAUX on August 4, 2012 at 5:20pm Don't forget -- that good old saying -- "God helps those who help themselves."
We have to educate our neighbors and get out the vote, or all is lost. If a disaster happens, I will not blame God. I will blame myself for not working harder on getting out the correct vote for a victory, and I will accept that lesson from God.
Get real, folks. Just because some nitwit is already saying that it wouldn't be the end of the world if Romney loses, that doesn't mean we have to waste our time arguing with such idiots. We've got about three months of hard work to do to turn out a massive vote against Obama, whether we are thrilled with Romney or not. It's pretty obvious that we will be better off with Romney than this nightmare, especially if we can get some more conservatives into the Senate and House and start taking over the key leadership positions. We also need to keep making gains in state and local government so that we develop a farm team of rising conservatives to replace the current batch of Republicans as we retire them. We need to not just defeat Obama, but rather to push back the progressive movement for the next 3 - 4 decades..

It WOULD be the end of the U.S. though. To me it's the same thing.

Permalink Reply by Gail Cohen on August 4, 2012 at 1:53am Romney's campaign called me for a donation - and I told them it depends on the convention and also Romney had better get in the fight mode - take a lesson from Reagan - turn Obama's accusations back on him - then I will consider contributing - I think personally they all are in a conspiracy to enslave us -- am tired of their bull....t

Permalink Reply by Darlene Black on August 4, 2012 at 8:25am I rarely read TPN anymore because the group seems to have lost it's way. Whatever happened to our pledge to support the candidate of our choice and if he did not get the nod then we would put our wholehearted support behind whoever the Republican candidate was????? Mitt Romney was not my choice but at the end of the day, above all else, the goal was to get ovomit out of the white house by doing everything possible in supporting the candidate which IS Mitt Romney like it or not. I have NEVER been a sheeple and I know when I have to do things I would rather not for the good of my Country and that means supporting Romney right now. He can only win with our support. The time for squabbling amongst ourselves about who we want to be the candidate is GONE. This will not be a brokered convention and if we do not support Romney and put him in the white house we may never have another chance to rid ourselves of the socialistic, marxist government that is daily taking away our freedom. Romney is far from perfect but when I think of the alternative if we don't support him it makes me cringe. Stop playing imaginary games and be realistic!!!!!! Let's put Romney in now and we can regroup and try for someone better NEXT time. He is thousands of times better than keeping ovomit.
Permalink Reply by Carla Virga on August 4, 2012 at 1:32pm Darlene, I agree with you that Romney is the candidate, and it is Romney we all need to support now. Discussion of supporting any other candidate at this point undermines the necessity of all anti-Obama forces to join together to defeat Obama, and I question the motives of those who seek to divide us.
Permalink Reply by JOHN DELASAUX on August 4, 2012 at 5:27pm You just told it all.
We have just 90 days to overwhelm Premier Obama and run him out of town on a rail.
There is absolutely NO benefit from any more divisive speculation about Romney's chances or his Conservative views.
He is a practiced businessman who can and WILL fix our broken economy.
End of story.
Permalink Reply by SHARRON AMSTER on August 4, 2012 at 8:36am We all seem to be thinking the same thing. We should have a plan for getting our country back. If we wait for something to happen. We will be the first that they will come after. Our parties are the word to the people. They get know other hope but what we give them. We must have everyone ready for as soon as we can. Get the word out. God Bless
