Sometimes even liberals get it right.
John Hickenlooper is the liberal Democrat Governor of Colorado. As you might guess, he was booked on the news shows today to talk about the massacre in Aurora Colorado.
The question was raised, how do you prevent tragedies like the Aurora massacre from happening.
You would expect a liberal like Hickenlooper to come back with the standard politically correct answer that more gun control laws were needed.
Instead, he surprised everyone.

Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper said no law could have prevented suspect James Holmes from carrying out the act of terror that rocked an Aurora movie theater early Friday morning and left 12 dead.
“This person, if there were no assault weapons available, if there were no this or no that, this guy’s going to find something. Right? He’s going to know how to create a bomb. Who knows where his mind would have gone. Clearly a very intelligent individual however twisted. That’s the problem, this is a human issue in some profound way,” Hickenlooper said during an interview on CNN's "State of the Union."
“The people around him had no idea that this was something he was capable of,” said Hickenlooper.
“How do you prevent this?” Hickenlooper asked host Candy Crowley.” “How do we preserve our freedoms…and all those things that define this country, and yet try to prevent something like this [from] happening? Let me tell you, there’s no easy answer. There isn’t.”
The governor described the suspect as a “deeply troubled, twisted, delusional person.”
“I am speechless,” he said. “I can’t conceive of a motive. In a funny way, this guy is a terrorist, right? For whatever twisted reasons that we can barely even imagine, he wanted to create terror. He wanted to put fear in people’s lives.
Hickenlooper is absolutely right about that. Aurora Colorado has very restrictive gun laws. That did not stop the shooter. The movie theater had a no guns policy. That did not stop the shooter.
What if Aurora Colorado had the most draconian gun control laws in America? That still would not have stopped this guy.
What would have happened if you could have actually kept guns out of this guys hands? The tragedy still would have happened. He just would have chosen a different method.
Look at his apartment. According to the police it was very thoroughly booby trapped. He had created explosive devices and managed to do so without raising any red flags.
Think about this for a second. Here we are in the post 9/11 world, with the Department of Homeland Security and this guy is able to build some pretty sophisticated bombs and he does not even show up on the radar?
If some how we could have denied him access to guns, he would have used another weapon, such as an explosive device.
Hickenlooper is correct. No laws would have stopped this guy.
EDITORIAL NOTE: I still refuse to identify the shooter in Aurora by his name. The people who should be remembered by name are his victims, not that sick freak.

Permalink Reply by Bruce Donnelly on Yes, but sick freaks like this can create enough public fear that folks become more willing to sacrifice their own rights and freedoms, even to the point of accepting the drift towards a "big brother" government or police state with no real privacy just because they want to feel more secure. That's a mistake, because the 2nd Amendment is there largely to protect us from government tyranny, rather than just from criminals and wackos like this, who are a far more limited threat no matter how much damage they may do before they are caught or killed to stop them. Their power to harm us is temporary. By contrast, government power to harm us steadily grows, and once given to the bureaucracy, becomes eternal unless there is a revolution by folks who the government will be trying to keep disarmed to prevent that risk to their power. That's why you will find the toughest gun controls in some of the most authoritarian and least free countries in the world.

Permalink Reply by Patti Jarvis on As a Colorado Native, I always have addressed my letters to Hickenlooper, first as the Mayor of Denver who allowed the Democratic Limosine fleet to gas up at city shops without paying tax...."KING OF DENVER" I still address my letters to him this way, I am sure he knows the nut on the western slope that addresses him this way. However, My respect for the man is gaining. He has business sense and although he approaches the Colorado Economy different than a republican or independent would, his business sense shows itself in little ways, for that I am thankfull. HIS comment is one from a Colorado Native. We know that guns don't kill people, people use guns as a tool for their evil. He knows gun laws will not stop a NUT. Thank you Hickenlooper for some common sense, which is seen so rarely in this insane parallel universe we are finding ourselves in.

But what is against Constitutional Law, the failures of Government Officials to maintain the Prime Directive of the Constitution. Which is the Safe Keep Of the People.

Thank you for the information about the effects of heroin and about its involvement in the Aurora case! I left a reply just yesterday stating that I suspect drug involvement in many of these spectacular cases (and most likely in many lesser ones as well) but it is a question the MSM neither asks nor answers. Ever!
I became aware of the way many illicit drugs dramatically alter brain function, especially the moral and emotional aspects, when I supported a family member through a rehab program some 30 years ago. In all the years since I have been dismayed at how little attention is paid to the possibility of drug use as a causative factor in criminal behavior. I believe the American public would be outraged if they were to become aware of the percentages!
While it is true that not all users become homicidal maniacs the ones that do strike randomly and without warning and can cause devastating damage. Sadly, mood altering drugs don't make the user stupid. Some show particular genius in the calamities they orchestrate! The more spectacular the incident the more I always suspect drug-induced madness. (Again, thank you , Henry, for verifying at least one!) And yet, typically, the issue was never raised in cases like Columbine, Virginia Tech, the Unabomber, the Murrah building, the Gabby Giffords tragedy .... on and on!
This is information the public has a right to know. That it is being purposely suppressed might be seen in the fact that all three of the links you so kindly provided lead to empty pages. THE ARTICLES HAVE BEEN REMOVED! How about it, fellow patriots, does this suggest a course of action to any of you? Do you think we ought to start writing letters to governors, police agencies, congressmen and others demanding that this aspect of crime prevention receive deeper investigation and the truth be made available to the public?

Other than the Governor, you can bet the farm that the restrict or ban element in politics will continue to push for the repeal of the 2nd. Amendment. Every time this sort of thing happens, they come out like roaches under the woodwork. 'No laws would've stopped this guy' is only a speed bump to those who want guns banned.
November can't get here soon enough! BUT, I shudder to think what's gonna happen between Nov. and Jan.!!

I expect to hear more stories of courage and selflessness come out of this tragedy. But yes, let's stop celebrating "anti heroes" (we used to call them villains and monsters) like that loser and see what happens to our society.
Kudos to Governor Hickenlooper for his honesty. I remember guys in high school making homemade explosives out of pretty random stuff. Fortunately they just had bad judgment... and minor injuries.
