California is a fiscal basket case. But under the leadership of Jerry Brown, it is even worse than we thought.
From the New York Times:
The state budget shortfall in California has increased dramatically in the last six months, forcing state officials to assemble a series of new spending cuts that are likely to mean further reductions to schools, health care and other social programs already battered by nearly five years of budget retrenchment, state officials announced on Saturday.
Gov. Jerry Brown, disclosing the development in a video posted on YouTube, said that California’s shortfall was now projected to be $16 billion, up from $9.2 billion in January. Mr. Brown said that he would propose a revised budget on Monday to deal with it.
“We are now facing a $16 billion hole, not the $9 billion we thought in January,” Mr. Brown said. “This means we will have to go much further and make cuts far greater than I asked for at the beginning of the year.”
Mr. Brown disclosed the news in a video that had all the trappings of a campaign announcement. In it, he aggressively accounted for the steps he said he had taken to try to scale back a $26 billion deficit he found upon taking office. And he urged viewers to back an initiative he is putting on the November ballot that would increase sales taxes by 0.25 percent and impose an income tax surcharge on wealthy Californians to try to stave off more cuts.
State officials said Mr. Brown’s proposal would include a package of immediate cuts, as well as others that would be triggered only if voters failed to approve his tax plan. The sales tax increase would expire after four years, while the income tax surcharge would last for seven years.
California has been run by liberals and for liberals for decades and this is the end result. California is a mini-Greece. They will not cut their spending and taxes have reached the point of being so oppressive that anyone with a car is fleeing the state as fast as they can.
It is no longer a question of if but now only when California will implode financially. One potential solution is to allow a Constitutional amendment that will allow states to declare bankruptcy but even that would only be a band-aid.
Here is a suggestion. Break California up. Create two Californias, a red California and a blue California. Let them divide the debt evenly. I am willing to be that within five years, the red California has its debt under control and while they may not be out of the woods, they would be on solid financial footing. Meanwhile, blue California would be a completely failed state.
Of course that will not happen. One of the big issues after 2012 will be the bailout of California. Perhaps it is fortunate that America will not have the money to bail California out, forcing the state to fix its own problems.

Permalink Reply by Jody Raines on May 12, 2012 at 9:06pm Somehow, it will be Bush's fault and the evil, greedy, dis-compassionate Republican's. It's never a Democrat's fault. Serves those Liberal granolan's right, the southern part of the state is saturated with flakes, fruits and nuts and peppered with illegal's and they want big Daddy warbucks government to have all the answers, provide for all their needs and wants and create a Utopian society. The poor Conservatives in the state are grossly outnumbered and without representation.

Permalink Reply by janet barks on May 13, 2012 at 3:08pm Walter, I have been very concerned about voter fraud. I just recently got a survey in the in the mail from the American civil Rights Union (ACRU). Surely many on this site has heard of this group. I am afraid to admit this, but I didn't know much about them. I have alway thought that it is important to join every group that stands for conservative values, as we are stronger in number.
The survey is titled: The 2012 Ballot Security & Election Fraud Prevention Project.
It states that it has mailed the survey to 10,000,000 Registered Voters on Steps to Stop Election Fraud.
It states, They are pleased by the efforts of the AMERICAN CIVIL RIGHTS UNION (ACRU) --- the pro-freedom, pro-Constitutional, pro-America answer to the far-left ACLU.
It is a large package with lengthy forms and explanations. They even sent a redacted copy of ACRU's Amicus Curiae legal brief filed in the U>S> Supreme Court in defense of Indiana's right to require a valid photo ID to vote. Further states that they have filed other court cases involving the Obama Justice Department, the ACLU, and other leftist legal action organizations that want to deny states the right to safeguard the integrity of the vote and ensure honest elections.
I hope others on the Tea-Party Nation site has received this same survey. Of course they want donations. It is somewhat maddening that the citizens of this country have to donate to assure someone is fighting for our basic rights. After all, we voted in representatives that should always be fighting for the constitution and making sure our voting process is fair. If, on the other hand, everyone that completes the survey sent 10 or 20 dollars it could go along way in serving our cause for a group that is trying to make a difference in fighting for our vote (among other things).
I would like to list the address of this organization that is up and organized doing something to fight the ACLU. If you didn't get a survey, it couldn't hurt to write and just voice your support to the American Civil Rights Union.
Edwin Meese, III has been involved for a number of years and serves on ACRU's Board of Directors and Policy Board. He is Former United States Attorney General Under President Ronald Reagan.
Susan A. Carleson is Chairman, ACRU (Your Pro-American Answer to the Far-Left ACLU)

I tried to scan in the actual forms and letters so I could post it here, but I am not very good with scanning and it didn't work for me.

Permalink Reply by Gene Swank on May 12, 2012 at 9:52pm I moved to Calif. in 1966, then it was a great place to work and live. I watched for 40 years the left try there best to destroy the state. Reagan fixed it then they voted in the lefties again and it went down hill again. Jerry Brown was a failure as a Governor the first time then thos idiots voted him in again. Calif, the highest taxes, the highest cost to run a business. They dont learn. I bailed out in 2006 and wont ever go back.
Permalink Reply by janet barks on May 13, 2012 at 2:27pm I noticed John. I am going to start calling the left Communist, because that is exactly what they are.
Do you think there is a real list out there somewhere of those that talk trash about them? I could just be paranoid, but who knows for sure?
Permalink Reply by Ann on May 12, 2012 at 9:28pm And then Red CA could buy everything up in Blue CA! I like it! I'll go back to Ca if this happens...
Permalink Reply by Walter T Jennings Sr on May 12, 2012 at 9:34pm Mr Moonbeam Brown gave all the illegals here instate tuition. Illegals get better treatment than out of state legal citizens. Add to this all the social systems the illegals have access to and it adds up to a bunch. But heaven forbid if you point a finger at illegals as a major part of this deficit. Liberalville will have a fit. I think hollywood with all the millions they are pouring into the present White House occupant's pocket should also pay for the illegals they want left here.
If they do ever split the state, make sure Hollywood and Move On along with Soros stays in the blue part. They can wallow together in their pig sty and make believe world.
