It is time for Todd Akin to go.
The Missouri Congressman, who until yesterday was a slight favorite in the Missouri Senate race, totally blew everything up with his interview where he claimed “legitimate rape” victims don’t get pregnant.
Akin claims he misspoke.
He probably did.
There are certain statements candidates can walk back, explain or minimize.
This is not one of them.
From now until the election, every special interest left wing super PAC will be flooding Missouri with commercials featuring this idiotic quote.
Conservatives and liberals have condemned Akin for this dumb comment. Akin’s point was that pregnancy from rape is rare. At this point, no one cares what point he was trying to make, only that he said something insanely stupid.
Some people are trying to make this an issue related to abortion.
It is not.
There is one issue here. Claire McCasskill is one of the most vulnerable Democrats in the Senate. A strong candidate would just about guarantee a Republican pick up of that seat. There were three candidates in the recent Missouri primary. They were Akin, John Brunner, the establishment choice and Sarah Steelman, a Tea Party favorite who was endorsed by Sarah Palin.
Akin has until August 21 at 5 PM to drop out and allow someone else to take over.
He should do so immediately.
One estimate by a political strategist is that this gaffe would create a 10-point swing in the polls. In other words, Akin goes from being slightly ahead to significantly behind. He would have a very tough time making up that ground.
McCaskill no longer has to run on her record. She does not have to talk about her votes for Obamacare and her billing of taxpayers for the use of her private jet or even the times she didn’t pay taxes on it. All the left needs to do is pull out the Akin “legitimate rape” clip.
Those of us in the conservative movement will never vote for a liberal like McCaskill. We know better. But there are a lot of people who only get their information from the drive by media and the commercials they see on TV. All they will hear is the Akin clip and for many voters, including many women, that will be enough to push them over the edge to either vote for McCaskill or not vote at all.
John Brunner was the establishment pick to win. He self funded his race and could do so for a general election. Sarah Steelman is a superb candidate and as a woman she totally kills the Akin screw up.
We must take the Senate back this year. If we do not win the Senate, even if Mitt Romney wins the Presidency, we will not be able to repeal Obamacare and stop all the damage Obama has done.
The Missouri senate seat is a must win seat and Todd Akin, who was generally viewed as a weak candidate before this, cannot carry the day.
Todd, do something for your nation. Step down and let someone else carry this flag.

When we do not stand for what is right regardless of making a win or loss and play the same games as the left plays then we are no better than they are. If we really stand for biblical principals then we should not waver from that just to pick up votes. What would God's word amount to if he changed it around so that he could gain more followers? Just saying, you can't lower the bar to pick up votes because eventually you wouldn't stand for anything.
