In some ways, it is hard to think back to what things were like five years ago. But a stroll down memory lane is worthwhile, especially as we roll into next year.
What were things like five years ago?
Five years ago, it was December 2006. In November, the mid-term elections had been held. They had been a disaster for the Republicans and were a sign of things to come.
Nancy Pelosi at the time promised, “partnership, not partisanship.” Of course, her first act was to strip minority party rights that Newt Gingrich had put into place in the House rules.
On January 3, 2007, the Democrats took control of the Congress and changed the direction of the United States.
On January 3, 2007, the Dow Jones closed at 12,621.77. The GDP for the previous quarter grew at 3.4%. The unemployment rate was at 4.6% and the economy had just set a record for 52 straight months of job creation.
When the Democrats took over in 2007, Barney Frank became Chairman of the House Financial Services Committee. Chris Dodd took over the Senate Banking Committee.
Today, the national unemployment rate is 9.1%. Our GDP for the last quarter was (for the moment) an anemic 2%, while Canada’s economy grew and a brisk 3.5%.
In 2007, five years ago, the Democrats took control of the legislative branch and drove the economy off the cliff. Obama can run against the Bush economy as much as he wants but the reality of life is the President can do many things, but spending and taxing decisions come from Congress.
The last time Republicans controlled both the White House and Congress, things were pretty good. The nation was at full employment and the economy was growing.
Barack Obama was in the Senate from 2007 until he was sworn in to office in 2009. He was a part of that majority that took America off the rails of prosperity and are now driving America to bankruptcy and poverty.
I could channel my inner Ronald Reagan and ask, “Are you better off now than you were five years ago?”
That is the question the Republicans need to be asking America.
Given the obvious answer, Americans need to be asking Republicans why they are not doing more to save this country.
Yes, Republicans only control the House of Representatives, but they can do something. They are not simply helpless passengers along for the ride. The House controls the purse strings. Unfortunately, we have the kind of leadership in the House today that we had in 2006. That was the kind of leadership that managed to lose control of Congress and give it to the Party of Treason.
Republicans are asking America to give them the reins of government again. There is no questions the Republicans can and will do a better job than the Democrats. But right now, we need something more than just a “better job.” We need innovative thinking and we need courage. We need Republicans with courage to cut the massive spending we are seeing in Washington and who are willing to make real cuts in government.
Meanwhile, it is worth asking, are you better of now than you were in 2006?
Aaahhh! Much better. On my list the differences would have filled a few pages.
Yet, it seems conservatives are seeking the 'perfect' candidate instead of the person most capable, most intelligent with both the ideas and the will to do 'what is right' and return to Constitutional government.
So we should support Gingrich who has a pass of cheating on his wife and is ready to comprimise his moderate views and sit with Nancy oh it was wrong?
While Cain has Conservative views who has only been accused of and has denied all accusations
No, John, Cain certainly did not deny paying the living expenses, for 13 years, of a woman his wife knew nothing about (a "kept" woman). Here is the link, complete with embedded video, of that interview Cain did with the Concord, New Hampshire newspaper called the Union Leader:
Did Cain think no one would dig up the dirt on him? What on earth was he thinking, running for President and thinking he could hide this? Everyone has their failings and sins, and Cain should have been ready to come clean and be very open about his own failings before he even announced he was running for office, or else not do it. The American people are very forgiving about past sins, but we prefer that they are in the more distant past (something farther in the past than last month), and we also prefer that the sinner actually be sorry for what they did wrong and have changed their ways. Cain must be crazy to think he can go on with his campaign. He should quit and apologize to his hard-working supporters, and to his wife. He had better pray his wife does not take him to the cleaners. I believe he will quit tomorrow. He should have never started a campaign, on such false pretenses.
all the more reason we need NEWT!
I agree, but it's a long way to the election and look how many of the pack have already pooped in their oatmeal!
If someone doesn't make Romney talk and engage, he'll be the one left standing after all of the others wet themselves.
Romney doesn't have the extemporaneous speaking ability Gingrich has and Obama can't wipe his ass if someone doesn't put it on his teleprompter, so if Romney can be made to talk and engage there is a possibility that he will mess up and make others see what he really is.
Bill O'Reilly mentioned on his program that people have been emailing and phoning him saying that if Obama gets re-elected, they will leave the country. With many countries in the world under the control of radicals and elites, what is left? We could all move to Alaska, our last frontier, secede from the union, form our own nation, and leave the lower 48 to those who want to live under Big Brother..
Costa Rica - Jean.
Tom: and if Mitt Romney or Newt Gingrich gets elected we won't be too much better off.
One might remember a Dow Jones of 14,164.53, on October 9, 2007 Things were going pretty good!
Now, people are happy to see a 12,000 number....forget the losses due to inflation.
The only good thing is that you have less money to worry about now!
Are you better off now, than in 2006? You are joking, right? What's the punch line?
That's what I wondered, are they serious, did they misunderstand the question or are they joking? There's no punch line so -- ???????????
