A war is now breaking out in the conservative movement. What is the question causing the conflict? Do conservatives need to embrace Mitt Romney? Some conservatives are insisting that we must. Those conservatives are critical of their conservative brothers and sisters who dare say a negative word about Romney. Some conservatives continue to attack Romney and some are even openly calling for a brokered convention.
Is it time to learn to love Mitt or do we conservatives need to do something else?
It is very simple. Conservatives cannot embrace or endorse Mitt Romney. He is not one of us and we cannot claim him as one of us.
The RINO wing of the party goes into hysterical fits when we say something like that. Even some conservatives start screaming that we are hurting Romney’s chances or that somehow anyone who says something negative about Romney is rooting for Obama.
First, let’s start with the indisputable. Romney is a liberal. In 1994, he ran to the left of Ted Kennedy when he was running for the Senate. In 2002, in a video that still circulates on YouTube, he called himself a “progressive.” He governed Massachusetts as a liberal. Had Romney been a Democrat, even by Democrat standards he would have been very liberal.
The conservative objection to Romney is not mere provincialism. It is not merely us saying he is not one of us; therefore we will not play with him. It is not us saying our candidates did not win so we are taking our toys and going home.
If we embrace Romney and Romney wins, his default is going to be to govern as a liberal. If we get Tea Party Senators elected, such as Ted Cruz in Texas and Sarah Steelman in Missouri, along with more Tea Party Congressmen (and keeping the many good ones we have like Jeff Landry and Sandy Adams), it might moderate Romney a bit.
We know this. If Romney wins the White House and continues the big government policies of Obama or just your generic big government Republican policies, we are not going to see a significant recovery. If we do not see conservative policies enacted, namely major spending cuts to government programs and tax cuts to stimulate the economy, America will limp along for the next four years. America will not recover from the Great Obama Depression and move back into economic growth and prosperity. Romney’s failure to enact conservative policy will be like the first Great Depression, where Roosevelt’s policies made the Depression much longer.
Meanwhile, the liberal media is already hitting the message that Romney is a conservative and a part of the conservative movement. Some on the left are even saying he is part of the Tea Party movement.
If we embrace him, we help sell that message.
In 2016, if Romney is running for reelection, the message will be conservatism does not work. When we talk about the success of conservative ideas, we point towards Ronald Reagan and to a limited extent George W. Bush. The left wants to destroy the message that conservatism works and a failed liberal Romney Presidency would help them do that.
In 2016, if Romney wins and fails to move the economy forward, the left will call him proof that conservative ideas do not work. Unfortunately with a majority of Americans not being politically active and getting much of their information from the drive by media, millions will buy into that untrue story.
Imagine who the Democrats will try to elect in 2016? Imagine someone as far to the left as Barack Obama (or even further) but who is competent?
One far left socialist has almost destroyed America. Romney will not save us and a second far left socialist in 2016 would totally destroy this nation.
When Ronald Reagan defeated Jimmy Carter in 1980, his legacy became the destruction of liberalism. The only successful Democratic candidate for President was Bill Clinton who ran as not a liberal but a centrist. It took the Democrats almost 30 years to be able to put an avowed liberal back in the White House. If we embrace liberal Mitt Romney as a conservative, we may never see another conservative in the White House.
Romney won the primaries, not because he was a conservative or because he was a great candidate. He won the nomination because he had more money than any (or perhaps all) of the other candidates.
Romney has not yet won the nomination. Some people, mostly Ron Paul supporters are trying to gum up the works. More power to them!
Some Republicans are already having buyer’s remorse. While the chances of a convention revolt are slim, the Republican delegates need to pay attention to what Romney did this past week. A brokered convention is in the best interest of the Republican Party. Bringing out a new candidate, any candidate not named Bush would be better for the Party than Mitt Romney.
After finally having conservatives united behind him, thanks to John Roberts’ insane Obamacare tax decision, in less than a week, Mitt Romney has managed to blow conservative support. We were ready to get into the fight for Romney and now through his own stupidity, he has taken the wind out of our and his sails.
Romney is not a conservative. We cannot call him one, nor can we embrace him. We may have to vote for him this fall because anyone is better than Obama; but he is not one of us.
Should Romney win, conservatives will have to be prepared to be at war with the White House almost as much as we are now.

Permalink Reply by Herrmann Glockler on July 5, 2012 at 9:18am I agree on the Natural Born Citizen part of Obama's disqualification for the presidency, and that that also applies to other potential presidential candidates.
But Obama can and must be challenged also on the fact that he may not even have American citizenship, because he lost it when his step father Soetoro adopted him, or when he failed to register for the draft, as his forged Selective Services card proves. And just a few days ago, a private investigator filed papers to prevent Obama to be certified in Ohio, because of his fraudulent use of a Connecticut Soc. Sec. no.
There is so much fake on Obama, and the LSM just refuses to investigate him.
The LSM is in a huge hole of credibility, and just on keeps digging faster and faster

Permalink Reply by grumpyelder on July 5, 2012 at 8:37am Rubio's a nice guy-- but, his father had not been naturalized when he was born-- You be stepping right into one of the traps that WND and others have been trying to spring on Obama for the last 4 years and you'll alienate at least half of the conservative voters in the process.. Not sure how smart that would be..
Permalink Reply by Lynda Fox on July 5, 2012 at 8:41am rubio has already been PROVEN to be ineligible....yet, you want that in the WH? GOOD GOD, WE have no hope at all !!!
Permalink Reply by Jack Roth on July 5, 2012 at 8:56am Please explain "that". are you that bigoted? I mentioned Rubio for 2012 and winning this election will allow the clarification of this and many other questionable issues. It's a little late to change horses.

Permalink Reply by Ray Marks on July 5, 2012 at 8:51am Mr. Roth, what is your definition of a natural born citizen?
The fight for a Conservative President is not over until after the RNC Convention. Until then Romney is not the nominee. Romney is the presuptive nominee. The reason we need a Conservative is because Romney is a liberal. Suggest you reread Judson's post. BTW, Rubio is not eligible to President or VP. If Romney chooses Rubio as his VP, the the election will belong to Obama unless Romney is thrown out on his head.

absolutely right David!

What part of chopping off the fiscal leg of the conservative platform is NOT acceptable do you not understand?
Now, one could say 4 more years of Obama or 8 more potential years of a moderate, big government loving Republican. Either way, a country that desperately needs fiscal responsibility will greatly LOSE and we all know it.
How can anyone dispute the fact that Willard Mitt Romney is no fiscal conservative. He's a nice man I'm sure and loves his family dearly but people, we're not electing how "nice" someone may be. We NEED to elect a president who is going to get CONGRESS in shape and FAST.
We need a president who will VETO irresponsible legislation that violates our Constitution. We need a president who will say to the members of Congress, "represent the PEOPLE and their wishes and for the sake of America...HONOR your Constitutional OATH that you made"!! That is what this country desperately needs!
