Even though the party conventions have not even happened yet, the speculation in Washington all surrounds the fall election and whether Obama can be reelected.
Many of the pundits think the race will come down to Florida as it did in 2000. There may be another state that could seal this race and it could really hurt one of the candidates.
Which state is it and what is happening that could cripple one of the candidates?
The state that could decide this election is not Florida, but it is Virginia. Virginia has been traditionally a red state but in 2008, it went for Obama. Many political experts believe that Romney cannot win the election without winning Virginia.
In a head to head match up, right now Obama leads Romney 50-42%. We are still four months out from the election so a lot of things can happen.
One of the big things that could happen is Virgil Goode.
Virgil Goode is a party hopping former Congressman from Virginia. Goode went to Congress as a Democrat in 1996. He eventually became an independent, then a Republican. He was defeated for reelection in 2008.
Now he is running for President under the banner of the Constitution Party.
When Goode is added into the mix, the polling changes radically. Obama’s lead expands to 49-35% over Romney.
Goode is currently trying to get on the ballot in Virginia, which is not easy. If you doubt that, ask Rick Perry, Newt Gingrich and Herman Cain.
To a lesser extent, Romney is having the same problem in New Mexico, where former Republican now Libertarian Gary Johnson is pulling voters that might ordinarily go to Romney.
Many Republicans in Washington are quite worried because Goode has until August 24th to get 10,000 signatures in. Goode has a significant advantage since Virginia is his home state and you can bet your last dollar that the Obama campaign is figuring a way to get money to Goode to make sure he gets on the ballot in Virginia.
The Republican Party should be worried.
While Romney managed to outspend everyone else so he could win the nomination, the GOP is about to nominate a candidate who is fundamentally out of step with most of America and the overwhelming majority of Republicans.
Mitt Romney is not only a liberal he makes no serious effort to reach out to conservatives. He and the Republican establishment simply assume that conservatives will vote for Romney because our mantra is anybody but Obama.
Most conservatives agree with that. However, there are some conservatives who are being split off.
Those who support Virgil Goode or Gary Johnson are simply providing a vote for Obama. Unfortunately the Republicans are dead set on nominating the one guy who could manage to lose to Obama.
This should be the year of a conservative landslide. In the year that could establish the Republican Party as the dominant party for twenty years, the GOP has simply defaulted back to an establishment hack who cannot win.

Permalink Reply by Bob Green on July 13, 2012 at 12:03pm As to Romney's VP choice, I'd really like to see him select Col. Allen West...and then watch West clean the floor with "Jokester Joe" Biden. Plus, choosing West would virtually eliminate the Dem's ability to keep pulling out "the race card" --- a sure bet if Romney selects another white man.
Permalink Reply by Rich Knoch on July 13, 2012 at 12:34pm I like Alan West, but he has a job corralling the Black Caucus and he may be the only one who can bring them to their senses, if that's possible?
Condoleezza Rice would be an excellent choice and would make most Dems look like who they really are . . . . . . incompetent, racist, statists and socialists slugs. I say most Dems . . . occasionally, but rarely, you hear a Dem emit something that almost makes sense.
Condoleezza would put the fear of GOD in the few liberals that believe in the Diety . . . . the rest would just whistle in the dark as their fiefdom blows up around them.
Permalink Reply by Bob Green on July 13, 2012 at 1:01pm I like Condolezza, too; but I guarantee that, if selected, the liberals will attack her "en masse" for her past association with the Bush administration. (They can't do that to Col. West.) Just a thought!

Permalink Reply by Joseph Christopher on July 13, 2012 at 8:35am To be fair, when every post you make seems to have the same theme (Anti-Romney) Is it no surprise 11% of Republicans now support Obama?
Not to mention, these constant posts would reinforce someone's view to become a supporter of one of these 3rd party candidate.
Romney may have outspent his opponents, but people went out to vote for him. If you're a conservative and stayed home during the Primary. You have no one to blame for Romney but yourselves.
We refused to unite behind a Conservative in the GOP Primaries and now it seems we're refusing to unite against Obama.
How tragic.
Permalink Reply by SHARRON AMSTER on July 13, 2012 at 8:56am I like Romney! It just hit me that I don't know anything about hoim. I am going to vote for him. So I am sorry if this hit a nerve. I was just wondering.. Sorry I got you mad.
Permalink Reply by tyler sims on July 14, 2012 at 9:20pm thus the problem...we must fix our primary voting system...we cant have this system of splitting the vote chooses a 4th place candidate. We need to have a national vote then a two candidate run off from their on out. This 10 candidate managed elections make no sense

Permalink Reply by Mollie Baxter on July 13, 2012 at 11:23pm Obummer lost SC big time in 2004 and SC hates Romney. Romney is NOT campaigning here because our governor and the political leaders like him - NOT the people! Obummer is campaigning a lot. Romney headquarters refuses calls from GOP State Delegates (me). I predict that SC goes for Obama this time around because of Romney's arrogance!
