When the Tea Party movement exploded onto the political scene in 2009, there were some amazing groups that came together. Perhaps one of the best-organized states was Virginia, thanks in large part to Jamie Radtke.
Jamie became the President of the Richmond Tea Party and eventually the Chair of the Virginia Tea Party.
Jamie has now done something else. She has become the first person from the Tea Party movement to try and win a seat in the United States Senate.
The Virginia Senate race became much more interesting in February of this year when Jim Webb, the liberal Democrat who currently holds the seat decided he would not seek reelection. While Webb gave his excuses for not running, the reality is this seat should go back to the Republicans in 2012.
All of which brings us back to Jamie Radtke.
George Allen, the former Senator from Virginia is running as a Republican. Allen lost the race last time in the infamous “Macaca” scandal, where Allen called a Democrat operative who was following him “Macaca.” The tracker, as they are called in the business, is of Asian decent. This degenerated into a media feeding frenzy and accusations that Allen was a racist. In the end Webb beat Allen.
As of late, Allen has been trying to claim he is a conservative. He has also been trying to claim support from the Tea Party. The Lynchburg Tea Party has recently blistered Allen and Allen’s campaign made a serious misstep when it listed a number of Tea Party activists as supporters of Allen. The only problem is some of them were not. Allen has had to back track on this and a number of names have been removed from his website.
Allen’s critics have said while he is claiming to be a conservative now that is not how he voted when he was in the United States Senate.
According to Mark Lloyd, who is the current Chair of the Virginia Tea Party Federation, Allen was one of the biggest spenders in Congress, supporting programs like “No Child Left Behind.”
Jamie Radtke is a part of the Tea Party movement, as opposed to being a candidate who simply wants to use the Tea Party movement so he can get back into the circles of power in Washington.
While Allen would be preferable to Tim Kaine, the former Chairman of the DNC who is running for the Democratic Nomination, it would be far better to have a real conservative in Washington.
Jamie Radtke understands the Constitution and its role in the life of our country. She understands that spending and the size of government must be limited. She understands that freedom and free markets are inseparable. She understands that the problem we have in Washington is a spending problem, not a problem of America being taxed too little.
Fighting an established, establishment politician like George Allen is not easy. Jamie Radtke is stepping up and making history.
