This has just come in; Rick Perry will not be on the ballot in Virginia, joining Michele Bachman, Rick Santorum and Jon Huntsman as candidates who did not qualify.
From The Washington Post:
Republican presidential candidate Rick Perry failed to submit enough valid signatures to qualify for the Virginia primary ballot, state GOP officials said Friday evening.
Perry’s campaign told state election officials it had submitted 11,911 signatures, but a Republican source familiar with the situation said that the Texas governor did not submit the required 10,000.
Earlier Friday, the Republican Party of Virginia certified former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney and Rep. Ron Paul (Tex.) to appear on the March ballot.
Four candidates — Romney, Perry, Paul and former House speaker Newt Gingrich — turned in thousands of signatures by the deadline Thursday.
State party officials are spending Friday certifying the signatures. They have not examined Gingrich’s signatures yet, but expected to do so by late Friday night. His campaign said it submitted 11,050 signatures.
For Bachmann, Huntsman and Santorum, not qualifying for Virginia was simply a sign of the end of their campaigns. It will be a shock for any of them to still be in contention after Iowa.
Gingrich and Perry needed to qualify for Virginia. Failing to qualify would be devastating. The loss of Virginia is not as bad for Perry as it could be for Gingrich. Perry has massive fundraising that can keep him in the race.
We should have word on Gingrich later tonight.
Permalink Reply by Lady Di on January 5, 2012 at 4:08pm @ B Zipper . . thank you for your post. I am a 70-year old lifetime Texan who has followed Perry throughout most of his political career. I have done a massive amount of personal research through the years and updated again in 2009/2010 when he was viciously "demonized" in his last gubernatoral election. I have it all saved on my computer with sourced data and will gladly share with anyone who needs documentation to debunk all the misinformation and false allegations which continue to surface. Just "friend" me at TPN and I will respond as soon as I can. Rick Perry is the candidate we need in the White House to get this country back on the right path and strong footing . . . and he has his boots and spurs back on. LOL. --Diana
you'd think the pundits, and so-called commentators on fox(because I would not expect anything else from MSM) would give the guy a chance to show his achievements-- america would rally there-- he needs to really get all that out there-- because not everyone gets the info- and just listens to the medias
morris has just written off perry as a loser!! he is too much-- and hannity didn't even defend perry-
