Kwame Brown, the City Council Chairman in Washington DC was today charged in Federal Court with a single count of bank fraud.  Federal Prosecutors filed a criminal information in the case today.  An information is a charging document similar to an indictment but it does not require the matter to be presented to a grand jury.  In federal courts, you typically see the filing of an information where a defendant has agreed to plead guilty in advance.

It is not shocking that a politician in the District of Columbia has been charged with a crime.  There is something else much more shocking about some of the politicians in the District of Columbia.

What is it?

Kwame Brown, as the Chairman of the DC City Council draws a salary of $190,000.  That is more than Senators and Congressmen draw.  Regular members of the DC City Council have salaries of $120,000.

Do you want to hear the really outrageous part?

The City Council positions in the District of Columbia are PART TIME POSITIONS!

That’s right.  These guys, and there are 13 of them, can hold another job on top of their DC Council position.

In addition to their salaries, the Mayor and City Council members get tickets to a skybox at both the Verizon Center and Nationals Park.  In the past few years, the Mayor and the City Council received separate skyboxes at Nationals Park because of the fighting between the politicians.  This year, they are forced the Mayor and City Council to share the box again.

If DC were a state, only Wyoming would have less of a population.  Many states have part time legislators that do more than the District of Columbia City Council does.   Tennessee, which has a population over ten times the size of DC’s operates with part time legislators and only pays them $19,000 a year.

DC has 13 city council members.  11 are from the Party of Corruption.  The other two are independents.   DC is not only badly run but has a history of corruption.  Kwame Brown is simply the latest who will be heading off to a Federal Prison.

The left wants DC to become a state.  There are obvious reasons for that.  If DC became a state that would be one more Congressman and two more Senators from the Party of Treason.

DC however is an economic disaster.  If DC were given full autonomy it would quickly jump to the line of failed states, ahead of California and Illinois.

DC is just another example of what happens when the Party of Treason is in charge of anything.

He is part of team obama and the commiecrats...he will get off on all charges like edwards did. holder will be told by obama to clean this up..Transparency right?

The District of Columbia is little more than a strange little foreign country to which the citizens who live in the fifty states of the actual United States of America send massive amounts of foreign aid.

THINK EVICTION OF THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA FROM THE UNION, NOT SECESSION BY ANY OF THE 50 STATES WHO ARE A PART OF THE REAL COUNTRY.

Oh, gosh Judson. You bring up a subject with so many aspects....

Let's begin with DC license plates, bearing the slogan TAXATION WITHOUT REPRESENTATION. DC was established in this manner to prevent the accumulation of undue power in this city, established specifically as the capitol of these States United.

Of course no citizens are required to live there! They remain free to move to States which do have voting representatives!

In some ways, the lack of representation by DC is the reflection of the Natural Born Citizen clause for the President. In the latter case, it exists to prevent dual or multiple National allegiances. Is this a clear parallel, or reflection of intent?

I was unaware that this stupid initiative had reared its ugly head again. It's been around a long time. I found an article that gives some background and explains the ramifications.

I am infuriated the left would take a well-known phrase phrase from our founding era and twist it to bludgeon the Constitution with!  I'm even more infuriated there are so many uninformed, ignorant people that believe this claptrap!!!

Simple solution:

Allow DC to be absorbed by the state of Maryland, from whence it came!  Residents get the vote ~~ Maryland gets the debt!

Simple!

Indeed a good solution! So long as the federal “seat of government” is moved elsewhere. And that "elsewhere" also becomes not part of any of the Several states, or shall be ceded, as DC was.

As the seat of the federal government, it was determined best not to let it fall under any state's jurisdiction. It is neutral to state government.

How about Detroit? Michigan might well be happy to rid itself of Detroit!

Mr. Rogers, surely you are not facilitating the undermining of our Constitution! So I assume your 'solution' is a joke.

My "solution" is NOT a joke.  The "federal district" was created in 1790 from land in Virginia and Maryland.  The Virginia portion was returned to the state by Congress in 1846.  Why could not Congress return the Maryland portion to Maryland?

It would remain the "seat of government," although as a city in Maryland.  I'm sure our astute solons could devise language to accommodate the return.

Sorry... that's no longer part of Washington, DC.

That's Arlington, Virginia. Not part of the Federal District..  And it IS a joke!

Why am I not laughing, Vern.....  what is now Arlington, VA was once part of the Federal District, returned by Congress and accepted by Virginia in 1846.

For specifics on the reasons for structuring D.C. the way the Founders did I would refer you to the Federalist Papers. Generally, it had to do with keeping power so diffuse that no individual or group could accrue enough power to be a tyrannical threat.

To undermine that safeguard as you suggest would require an Amendment. Well guess what? In the 1980s an Amendment seeking to change the mandated structure of D.C. governance passed both houses and was put to the states for Ratification.

It turned out to be a waste of time, tho, because 34 of the 50 states REFUSED TO RATIFY IT! It would appear the majority of our state governments recognize and appreciate the wisdom of our Founders embodied in the U.S.Constitution.

I am so sorry that you appear not to.
