American students do poorly on standardized tests for math and science when you compare them to students in Europe and Asia.
Why is that?
American kids are not stupid. Far from it. American kids are some of the brightest in the world.
Could the problem be the teachers and the education system? An incident out of North Carolina points out what could be a problem.

A YouTube video uploaded on Monday afternoon apparently shows a schoolteacher from the Rowan-Salisbury school district in North Carolina informing a student that failing to be respectful of President Obama is a criminal offense. Breitbart News has uncovered that the student is a high school junior, and that the teacher is apparently one Tanya Dixon-Neely.
The video shows a classroom discussion about the Washington Post hit piece about Mitt Romney bullying a kid some five decades ago. One student says, “Didn’t Obama bully someone though?” The teacher says: “Not to my knowledge.” The student then cites the fact that Obama, in Dreams from My Father, admits to shoving a little girl. “Stop, no, because there is no comparison,” screams the teacher. Romney is “running for president. Obama is the president.”
The student responds that both are “just men.”
The teacher yells -- literally yells -- that Obama is “due the respect that every other president is due … Listen,” she continues, “let me tell you something, you will not disrespect the president of the United States in this classroom.” She yells over the student repeatedly, and yells at him that it's disrespect for him to even debate about Romney and Obama.
The student says that he can say what he wants.
“Not about him, you won’t,” says the teacher.
The teacher then tells the student – wrongly – that it is a criminal offense to say bad things about a president. “Do you realize that people were arrested for saying things bad about Bush? Do you realize you are not supposed to slander the president?”
The student says that it would violate First Amendment rights to jail someone for such sentiments. “You would have to say some pretty f’d up crap about him to be arrested,” says the student. “They cannot take away your right to have your opinion … They can’t take that away unless you threaten the president.”
Clearly this teacher would prefer to be back in her favorite county, the old Soviet Union.
This is the problem. We have so many teachers who are far left wing nuts who are more interested in political indoctrination than they are in teaching. America has been throwing money at the education system for seventy years.
All we have to show for it are teachers’ unions, massive educational bureaucracies and test scores that get worse every year. In many cities, while the unions enjoy lucrative contracts that protect even the worst teacher from being fired, the graduation rate plummets to 50%.
This teacher? Not only was she not fired, according to press reports; she is still on the job.
It is safe to say, anything those kids learn is in spite of her, not because of her.

No, I don't wonder. I put 5 kids through public school and had to re-teach them everything they "learned," especially American History. This is what we got when the old radicals like Bill Ayers finished college, became college professors and started teaching teachers how and what to teach. The NEA and the federal Department of Education needs to be smashed and authority for the local school returned to the local parents.
Permalink Reply by sharon ostwinch on I think the problem with schools - is the leftest agenda. The unions run the schools and the left agenda that is to be taught whether you like it or not. I have been preaching home schooling for about a year. It is the only true way to educate your children with values and the real truth. The books used are filled with lies and these teachers just go about teaching with no regard for the truth or your child. As with everything the gov. touches turns to crap - thus the schools. Even the colleges are worse Professors preach the left agenda 24/7. When my son attended a community college to was out raged most of the time. He would always argue for the truth. This is not teaching this is indoctrnation at it's best. Gov. must remove itself from the schools. It's soul purpose is to have your child listen and take home that knowledge (or b/s) and use it at home and convert the parents. The Alinsky way of schooling - get the kids and get the parents. Sick and sad it has to change if we are to remain a free society with liberties.
Permalink Reply by John Bellaire on Maybe the teacher was just confused and thought she was in China or some other country where dissident people are punished and there is no Constitutional freedom of speech. Couldn't anybody make that mistake or have a moment of insanity? Anyhow, what good marxist authoritarian teacher would not want to impose their beliefs on students. So what if it is improper and unconstitutional to deny freedom of speech. if it is good for communists, the teacher and her hero, Obama are fine with it. Obama has not been heard to comment on the incident, and I doubt he ever will.
