Mitt Romney is now muddling through his first major failure. If this crisis is any indication of Romney as a leader, his campaign is in trouble and so is the nation when he beats Obama this fall.
What is happening?
It started with the hiring of openly gay foreign policy advisor Ric Grenell. Immediately social conservatives began to complain that Romney had chosen a homosexual male for the job and they immediately began wondering about his commitment to other conservative issues.
When the Romney campaign hired Grenell there were one of two possibilities. The first is he did not know how social conservatives would react and the second is he did not care. Neither is good.
Romney’s history is that of a liberal. That is how he governed in Massachusetts and appointed openly gay people to various positions in his administration. He has nothing in common with social conservatives. It probably did not register with him.
The second issue is that he probably did not care. For social conservatives, they should be very worried that the soon to be nominee of the GOP does not care about their concerns. Perhaps Romney should be more concerned.
Even without all of the dead people Obama is rallying to vote for him, Romney must have the social conservatives in his corner.
Team Romney probably thinks all the conservatives are in his pocket. After all, we will not vote for Barack Obama, right?
There is a third option. A lot of people could choose to stay home. Or at least ignore the name at the top of the ballot and just vote on races further down the ballot.
After totally screwing up the hiring of Ric Grenell, Team Romney then screwed everything else up too.
There is nothing worse than indecisiveness and that is exactly what the Romney campaign did. Grenell’s area of expertise is allegedly foreign affairs. This is the week the foreign affairs expert should have been front and center.
Instead he was nowhere to be seen.
Hiring Grenell was a mistake and a bad choice. Then simply giving him nothing to do, which is what the Romney campaign did, was even worse. The Romney campaign said they hired him because they believed he was the best.
Well if that is the case, act like it.
Instead, they vacillated and Romney once again looks like a flip-flop.
Grenell finally took everyone out of their misery by resigning. He gave the Romney campaign the easy way out, which was apparently what they were looking for.
The lessons from this mess are simple. There is a serious lack of leadership in the Romney team. It starts at the top. At a time of crisis, when American needs great leadership, we are getting…. Well it is hard to say what we are getting. But it is not so hard to say what we are not getting.

Ouch! The presidency is one place where we don't want OJT!
Permalink Reply by Melanie Mathiason on May 3, 2012 at 4:32am I read somewhere that the NRC has given Romney money already. I won't be giving NRC any money; my money will go directly to the candidates.
TEA Partiers should be smarter than to support another One World Government supporter; Romney is the biggest OWG supporter amongst the full field of candidates throughout this campaign. OWG equals NO CONSTITUTION, NO BILL OF RIGHTS, and Obama is taking us there as quickly as he can get the legislation passed or write executive orders.

Melanie: What is your alternative for President?
I am holding my nose and gritting my teeth in voting against Barf Ovomit and still my hand is critically reluctant to put an x by RINO O'Romney's name. God help us!

Okay, the plan before was to keep Romney from getting to 1144. Has that changed? We can still do that by simply voting for Ron Paul. Wouldn't that still lead to a brokered convention?
Not a rhetorical question. Please discuss or at least explain.
Permalink Reply by Chas Jones on May 1, 2012 at 11:45pm I continue to encourage every lawful voter who has yet to vote in a GOP primary to vote for anyone OTHER than Romney. Deny him 1144 and oh my, watch what happens next.
Like most, I was sorry to see Newt's video confirming he will suspend his campaign tomorrow.
However, only IF and when Romney reaches 1144, will voters have a true crisis of conscience. Clearly, conservatives and others, MUST not stay home come November. Cast votes for every candidate your conscience allows.
PRAY!
Chas, thanks for affirming my perception and thanks for your clarity in general. (I read your other replies.)
Permalink Reply by Chas Jones on May 2, 2012 at 9:35am Carol, and others, I think you are understanding me and I appreciate the effort. I want Obama defeated. However, a great many folks will not simply throw aside all they stand for and vote for "the lesser of TWO evils."
But we had this same conversation and result many times now. As recently as only 4 years ago. Most of those posting and reading this Forum knew exactly what Obama was and how he would govern ... but McCain never gave them reasons to vote FOR McCain ... and McCain's campaign cost him the election and gave us Obama.
Romney and his supporters, the GOP establishment, ALL must hear US. If they campaign as "Obama-lite," they will not only lose this election, they will lose hundreds of thousands if not millions of us as registered republicans. They will lose our future donations and volunteerism.
They WILL see a serious defection to a third national Party. Conservatives, and especially Christian conservatives MUST stand FOR ... God and His WORD ... FOR principles and values.
They simply cannot settle for the lesser of 2 evils.
I believe in redemption and salvation. If Romney becomes the GOP nominee he MUST embrace the principles and values upon which the GOP was founded. If he mistakenly thinks he can win the election straddling some progressive, moderate middle ... he will be wrong and he will lose.
I'd rather speak Truth here in hopes it gets noticed by others ... including Romney and the GOP establishment.
Chas,
Again, I applaud your clarity. The case could not have been stated more succinctly.
Personally, I feel so betrayed by the GOP I cannot share your interest in preserving it. The rot is just too pervasive, their platform is no longer in line with even the most basic American principles and values. Indeed, their main interest these days seems to be to avoid getting their custom tailored shirts wrinkled!
I suspect that Mr. Romney is taking advice from the GOP elders. If he really wants to win the WH, I would advise Mr. Romney to break with that losing philosophy and start putting together a team and a message that can get the conservative bloc energized. I don't need a freshly-pressed shirt, I need a hero!
