A catastrophic failure of leadership.
Mitt Romney is now muddling through his first major failure. If this crisis is any indication of Romney as a leader, his campaign is in trouble and so is the nation when he beats Obama this fall.
What is happening?
It started with the hiring of openly gay foreign policy advisor Ric Grenell. Immediately social conservatives began to complain that Romney had chosen a homosexual male for the job and they immediately began wondering about his commitment to other conservative issues.
When the Romney campaign hired Grenell there were one of two possibilities. The first is he did not know how social conservatives would react and the second is he did not care. Neither is good.
Romney’s history is that of a liberal. That is how he governed in Massachusetts and appointed openly gay people to various positions in his administration. He has nothing in common with social conservatives. It probably did not register with him.
The second issue is that he probably did not care. For social conservatives, they should be very worried that the soon to be nominee of the GOP does not care about their concerns. Perhaps Romney should be more concerned.
Even without all of the dead people Obama is rallying to vote for him, Romney must have the social conservatives in his corner.
Team Romney probably thinks all the conservatives are in his pocket. After all, we will not vote for Barack Obama, right?
There is a third option. A lot of people could choose to stay home. Or at least ignore the name at the top of the ballot and just vote on races further down the ballot.
After totally screwing up the hiring of Ric Grenell, Team Romney then screwed everything else up too.
There is nothing worse than indecisiveness and that is exactly what the Romney campaign did. Grenell’s area of expertise is allegedly foreign affairs. This is the week the foreign affairs expert should have been front and center.
Instead he was nowhere to be seen.
Hiring Grenell was a mistake and a bad choice. Then simply giving him nothing to do, which is what the Romney campaign did, was even worse. The Romney campaign said they hired him because they believed he was the best.
Well if that is the case, act like it.
Instead, they vacillated and Romney once again looks like a flip-flop.
Grenell finally took everyone out of their misery by resigning. He gave the Romney campaign the easy way out, which was apparently what they were looking for.
The lessons from this mess are simple. There is a serious lack of leadership in the Romney team. It starts at the top. At a time of crisis, when American needs great leadership, we are getting…. Well it is hard to say what we are getting. But it is not so hard to say what we are not getting.

Melanie: You have not been paying attention. The congress is getting it right, as far as their own interests are concerned. I wrote a blog piece entitled "It's The Money Stupid", which points out the root cause of all the ills in our government.

I have yet had anyone debate me on this point. The fact is that the constitution was crafted with honest men in mind and once dishonest men get into congress, it's like a cancer that keeps spreading and the only cure is to cut it out. However, the corruption, in my estimation, is so great that simple elections will not be sufficient, as the election process is being orchestrated by these same corrupt people and their useful idiots.

Judson (and All), I found this following comment on Lucianne dot com concerning the firing of Grenell. I can't vouch for it, but if true, it shows poor judgement by Romney.

Grenell's own Twitter account killed his career.
He had to scrub 800+ Tweets after his appointment by Romney.
Many of his juvenile insults were directed toward women, including Callista Gingrich, Michelle Obama, Rachel Maddow, etc.
It's ammo for the "GOP War on Women" crowd.
Then...news outlets remembered his attempt to have his same-sex partner listed as his "spouse" at the Interior Dept. under GWB...and his push to have GWB support a global ban on the criminalization of homosexuality.
In a word, trouble.

Unless Romney capitulates (very unlikely) there is no one to vote for at the top of the ticket...I'll vote for conservatives where I find them...and screw the GOP and all those who could care less what kind of trash they throw against the wall. The GOP is not part of the solution. They are part of the problem. Figure it out folks. Times up. Unless we pull our heads out of the sand...there is going to be a very great need for sun burn cream for places that should NEVER need it...but then again, when you don't give a @#$@ about finding and promoting, and funding and electing qualified candidates...you get what you get...and that is the end of the story for America...as we once knew it.
The only question to ask now...how long with America be down before we return to the top...if ever again? The only answer...we'll be down until we start acting like what we do and don't do...actually matters...and if this election does not make that extremely plain...nothing will.

Judson, you note that there is a serious lack of leadership in the Romney team. I would also say there is a serious lack of leadership in the Republican Party. I'm not hearing leadership coming from the Tea Party now either. Good leadership usually recognizes that unity is critical. We have to unite to get rid of Obama and try to start turning this train around - continuous trash talking the one who may be running against Obama is totally non-productive and, I think, indicative of tunnel vision. There are probably only a few Romney fans who read your posts. I am not a Romney fan. However, just stirring the pot of discontent is not the way to defeat Obama.

Sorry, but so far Romney gives conservatives and TEA Partiers little IF Anything to unite around. If Romney thinks merely becoming the GOP nominee means victory, then he need only look to campaigns by Dole and McCain. IF Romney becomes the nominee he will need to demonstrate WHY anyone should vote FOR him.
Merely citing Obama's horrific record will NOT motivate many to vote FOR Romney. That's what the general election campaign is about.
I'd rather have Romney lie to the nation and claim he supports conservative values and policies, and then reveal his lies in office, then watch him try to win as a Massachusetts "moderate or progressive [his words]," and lose.

Betty, you are correct that we have to unite, but not behind Romney ... we [including Romney] must unite behind the basic principles and values upon which our republic and the republican party were founded.
Failing to do that WILL result in more years of Obama.
Simply wishing enough folks will abandon principles and values to unite behind one person has been and always will be a losing formula.

A cheer for us. Here goes. Newt, Newt, he's our man, if he can not do it no one can (I sure would have loved that). NO NO Ron, Ron, he's our man, if he can not do it no one can. or How about Cain, Cain he's our man blah blah blah. you get it. and so on and on with the other "drop outs". I know, let's just write in who we want. say 3% for Newt, another 3% for Cain and another 3% for Ron add more percentages where you like. My question is, where do all the 3% 'ers come from, not ovomit.
take away all those that do not vote and lets just say another 6% of those that cast for someone not on the ballot or maybe an independent on the ballot and what have we got. Four more bummer years. Remember, you hold your nose to take that terrible tasting medicine, Mitt is not the cure, but he can be tolerated a slight bit better than the bummer in office now. With a take over of the senate, with conservatives, and an overthrow of boner, we can control the "nitt". First things first, jail bummer now.
